Understood completely. Actually, there's nothing wrong with calling yourself doctor when you're not. Although I haven't done this myself, some my friends reckon that if you tell a patient you're a "junior doctor" the patients are a thousands times more co-operative in doing stuff like PEs.

No, Adelaide is I'm not biassed...

But realistically, things have changed a lot in medical education over the past couple of years (obviously the biggest change being from under to postgraduate teaching).

As far as I'm aware, for undergraduate courses, Melbourne is the most prestigious, followed by Adelaide and then UNSW. For actual content of the course, Monash, Adelaide and Newcastle have the most modern courses.

I don't really know much about Perth (so I can't comment on it). And I don't think anybody'd want to live in Hobart or Townsville

yeh, these subjects are pretty new, you wouldnt have done them if you did the old hsc (before 2001)

although computer studies has been around for a while now

Posted by Philby on Sep-15-2002 10:38:

ummmm
year 11:

english
physics
maths methods
history
info tech systems
graphics
lol there was one more but i cant remember! it musnt have been that good then

year 12:
english
maths methods
physics
info tech systems
graphics

so i dropped history and something else, which i kinda regret
i needed methods to get into computer science at uni
which i didnt get a high enough enter score anyway
and as far as i know my vce certificate is still hanging around in the office at school, should go get it one day....

Posted by Mikrop on Sep-15-2002 12:05:

I did all the geeky subjects...
English
Chemistry
Physics
Maths Methods
Specialist Maths

LOL... I was pretty much in exactly the same boat as Renegade for Specialist. I spent most of the time in class breaking little bits off the eraser and chucking it at ppl. Hehehehehe. For the first CAT (Assignment) I handed in the first draft of some other guy's CAT. I ended up getting a C+ or something. Overall I got a TER of 81.45, so it wasn't too bad considering I did mostly shit all h/w and copied most of the assignments and stuff. In retrospect, I should have studied harder, but I'm happy what I'm doing now.

Interesting you should bring this up ash cos I've been thinking a lot about school recently..

(some of this is completely melbourne-based info only so sorry to the sydney guys... and sorry about the LONG post but I want some feedback from melbourne ppl so...yeah....pls bare with me if you're a Melbournian)

I'm currently doing yr.12/11 at a private school in melb.

I'm Not doing VCE (hsc equivalent) I'm doing IB: International Baccalaureate, which is only available at a few schools in melb; Carey, MLC, and I dunno where else.....but I kinda screwed around a bit last year and the school fucked me over...

My results for yr.11 subjects are as follows.
NB. It's 80% based on your end of yr.12 exams. The marking is out of 7 and a 7 is like an A+ ... IE. 7 > 85%, 75%<6<85% ...Etc.

English Exam (it's like vce/hsc English Literature, all essay writing/novel analysis) = 6

French (Harder than vce french, NO ONE gets a 7) = 4

Chem = 3 (heheheh I hated chem, cos it was sooo boring, again slightly harder than vce chem)

Psych = 5 (very diff. to vce psych, it's like 2nd yr uni psych ((my teacher was a melb uni lecturer, it's all essay writing, no multiple choice or short answers)

Maths Methods = 5 (The standard is between Vce methods and higher maths)

Theatre Studies = 6

Now, that converts to like a 92 on vce (if it was my final year)
BUT because I smoke (B&H, NOT weed), I have eyebrow and tongue piercings, and I missed a couple of classes and a couple of assignments (not course required work mind you, I did all the IB required stuff, just didn't do certain bit of teacher assigned homework/essays whatever) the SCHOOL decided for ME that I was unable to do all year 12 subjects this year, they said I didn't do well enough in english cos I didn't do 2 essays (out of like 16 during the year or whatever) I had to do half yr 11 half yr 12 this year.

I was in the top 30% for yr 11 english, tell me how the fuck that made me unfit for yr 12 english argggh!!!

SOOOOOoooooo

this year I've been doing

English yr.11 (bah) I'm getting 5's again

French yr.12 (Le vce est plus, plus facile que l'IB) I'm getting 6's!!

Maths Studies yr.12 (which is in between Vce methods and the one just below it) I'm getting 5's

Theatre Studies yr.11 (dun know why I'm goin 11 again, I blame the school) I'm getting 6's

I dropped Chem for yr.11 Biology, and I'm getting 6/7's in Bio.

and they changed the fucking psych course so I had to do that as yr.11 as well I'm getting 6's

Soooo this is like equivalent to 95 on vce maybe (IB has VERY generous conversion rates to your Ter) but it's a LOT more work...

And we also have to do on the side (Compulsory to get the diploma) 50 hours of Sport (or "Action") 50 hours of "Creative" (IE. Art, Drama, but it can't be a subject, has to be co-curricular) and 50 hours of service which is like unpaid voluntary work anywhere (can be school or local coucil, charity, whatever).
Also there's an extended essay which is a 4000-5000 word essay in a subject of your choice (you get like 6 months to do it in your own time) AND an extra subject called TOK (Theory of Knowledge) which is basically a short Philosphy course. And 3 tok essays. And that's alongside your class work....

The main difference is there's a lot of OUT of class work which isn't dependent on your score, but the teachers believe it's neccessary.

And I'm not inclined to a lot of out of school work, study Fine, essays No.

Basically the school's gone agro at me again cos of uniform (piercing) and missing some classes (the IB doesn't have an attendance requirement like vce/hsc) ...And I can't handle all the Assemblies, House Meetings (homeroom, roll call, whatever you school calls/called it), Uniform, No Smoking, Not being allowed to leave at lunch, too many things.

And I don't think I could handle ANOTHER year at Carey sooo

I'm Moving To Swinburne To Do Year 12 VCE (IB yr.11 can be converted to Units 1&2)

OMFG!!!

I need your input on this if possible ..

I'm gonna do Units 3&4 (YR.12 for hsc ppl)

English Literature
Psychology
Biology
French

Basically the difference is a school where I can drive there (I'll have my P's), I'll have no more than 4 hrs a day (they have 2 hour classes), I'll be able to smoke, I'll be able to get a coffee/lunch at glenferrie when I don't have classes, I'll be able to wear casual clothes, I get every wednesday off....Basically I won't be stressed out of my head getting chased down by employed teachers who's only job is to hound students..in other words LESS STRESSED

Do you think it's a good idea, I've almost decided to change, but either way there's No way I could do another year at Carey, and If I do go to swinburne I'm definately going to work, I AM NOT A DERO!!!!

Also I'm going to try and work at the same time to get some money, either casual work or be a "gay party" dj , it's only money guys...

Need feedback, should I switch to swinburne...

Sorry about the rant and rave, I'm not bitter, it's just that I should be finished this year

And the shame is that if I applied myself I could get over 90 very easily, but I just Can Not handle my school anymore (Swinburne is more like a uni environment)..

Sorry about the length, you're probably all
I just feel strongly about this stuff...

And I do know it's not the most important thing in the world, I'd prefer to just leave school now and work...BUT society says I need a piece of paper for uni, which I then will never use for the rest of my life Go Figure

Please give me feedback, PM me even if u want...

hybid junkie... your post made my eyes hurt
sorry i cant add any useful info.. but it sounds like you've made your mind up already, so yea... but beware... sometimes its good to have the teachers on your back... its hard to always find the motivation to work when u dont think its necessary.

No, no, no. We don't do handwriting units, we do handwriting degradation units. That way when the medical lawyers go through our patient's files we can say make up what the little squiggles mean.

Don't worry, it'll be all (if not already is) on computers within a couple of years, which will mean our handwriting will degenerate even more!

Marist College in Eastwood.........probably the stupidest school in the entire archdiocese, my software teacher was constantly asking me how todo stuff in PASCAL, its pascal ffs, it aint rocket science, she got all the stupid gates wrong, the only good teacher i had was my maths teacher, he knew what he was talkin about, and unlike all my other subjects, was qualified to tech yr 11-12 maths

as for Religious catholic studies, it was the biggest load of crap ever, but it didnt count, and was an excellent time to catch up on the sleep i missed, tryin to work out all my skoolwork, cause my teachers didnt understand it
