Its interesting the way Holden talks about the "english progressive scene" basically calling the music he had to make for it "in a box". Compared to alot of other dance music the stuff from that era seems like it had a diverse amount flavor to it.

From Breeder - Tyrantanic (Slackers Kingdom Come Remix) to Tijuana - Groove is in the Air (Simon's Future Dreams Mix) it seems like there is a good diversity compared to say modern day Trance which basically just comes down to an exact formula with almost no room to differentiate yourself from the next guy.

Yes, prog does have a general structure/formula it follows but what really made it great was the combination of that with the number of producers doing different things with it. The tracks I have listened to set them apart from each other, its rare I listen to a Digweed set and hear something that just sounds like it has no individuality. Really I don't think its even so much about "prog" itself but the DJs who play it and the fans that listen to it generally speaking hold higher standards.

No, the early '00s progressive sound was not very varied at all.

Very local and I would not mind going to it, but if it's like a few of the last classic trance nights (either full of shirtless roid monkeys) or has 3 people in, if not sure it's worth the hangover.

Good crowd, mostly veterans from Gatecrasher and Cream. No knuckle-heads and a good atmosphere.

I can't really call myself an expert in either genre but I am more familiar with the late 90s/early 2000s prog sound. Most of the progressive psytrance I have listened to sounded the same, but I may have been looking in the wrong places. Most of what I found wasn't through established DJ's but digging through beatport.

Btw I don't really consider the "J00F" sound progressive psytrance

All the tracks have wicked atmospheres and slick production; however, they also sound similar to each other.
