countries aren't SUPPOSED to try and annex other smaller ones, so, it's really not that impressive that america didn't. especially when they are doing just that now, by more subversive means such as the WTO.

Yes you are damn straight i was ticked when i heard this, and i must agree with the previous post on how are taxes are spent, way to much waste. Now im not 100% on this but im pretty damn sure that in the last election did the Liberals not say they wanted to abolish the GST?

i intended moving out of the country pretty soon after I finish my degree... but now after hearing that they consider this kind of bullshit tax raise and that a programmer starts at 30K canadian, now I'm defintly sure of it... matter of time....

I mean they just lowered the revenue tax by not much because it was meant to lower the deficit, but now they want to take the same money from another tax... what about the huge surplus the govt is stacking every year...



oh and the thing about the US taking over the world... I can't remember which writer wrote it but it was saying something like that: " No need for wars or weapons anymore to conquer the world, all you have to do is control a country's economy..."

you know what i like??? how this entire thread was started with misinformation or a misunderstanding. canada is not raising the gst, the story is that they are thinking of POSSIBLY doing it in order to help balance the budget. but they havent done anything or made an announcement that they are defenatly doing it. (they being the government). get the facts straight before posting, im also suprised that im the first to notice... really....

first our hospitals aren't THAT bad... a close friend got his spine completly reconstructed with metal (first time they did that kind of operation in the world) and all that for 0$....

ever heard of CLSC ? bring your blood so they can test it... takes a couple of days. 0$

last 5 times I went for medication, payed nothing... 0$

btw, i think alberta is starting to try more of a private system. In theory, private health care along side public health care is really good. It eases the stress on public health care hospitals by allowing some people to go to a private hospital.

if u make 50k per year you make between 31-34 net...if you make 35k per year, you make 24-27k per year net....the beauty of canada and this god for saken province we call quebec....

btw, i graduated with a degree in IT last year and after 3.5 years and 9000 bux total, i was surrounded by bombers, terrorists and retards...what did it get me? not even a 30k job in computers...another field!

if my parents and myself werent taxed so much in the past 20 years, i would have graduated from university in the states getting an entry level job right away without even looking making 40-60k U.S funds and....barely taxed! and the cycle would start again and i would afford school for my kids once they reached 20 years old....

you see the pattern, its all a cycle...."in canada, you make shit all, half that shit goes to the gov't. The rest of your income leads you a meaningless life and you get to die in a hospital for free, since thats what you paid for your entire life.... go to states with a degree, get a good job, piss on the poor people, pay for health insurance and laugh at the rest of the world"

Sounds to me like Canada are looking at what we're doing here in Australia and since the government here get away with a 10% GST then why the hell shouldn't they kinda reasoning. But when all said and done it works

we have Medicare and free schooling and heavily subsidised college, A welfare system etc etc. Yeah we have the same problems too, there's waiting lists for some medicare services like operations and so on. But it's bound to be imperfect due to it's very nature.

Personally i think it's a lesser of other evils and i'm content have it in place.

Well done malek, i really like your ideas in this thread, and your reaction to other people trying to drag you into a flame war. i am a programmer as well, we should talk some more.

anyway, a few things i want to say in relation to all this.

yes, i also noticed that it(the raising of the GST) has not happened yet, but, that they are thinking about it. they are only considering it. this is the time to raise your voice and say NO more GST! you don't protest after it's already been raised.

now, i also know that when it's publicized that the government is "thinking" of doing something, that means they WANT to do it, and are testing the waters of public opinion to see if it is supported. I say raising the GST sucks, and i will let them know my opinion.

also a few thoughts on healthcare. i just got back from an awesome lecture on healthcare, given by a woman who has been researching healthcare in Alberta for 40+ years. she gave a very informative and interesting talk about how the privatisation has been detrimental to quality, access, price, and safety of healthcare in the province. over the past 10 years, alberta has gradually moved to a 2 tier health system (even though the govt insits this is not the case) wherby costs are transferred to the user like the united states.

british columbia is currently "thinking" about moving to this style of system (read. the govt wants to do it, and is trying to market it to us)

anyway, the talk was excellent, and more information can be found on the internet. here is one good place to start:

and finally, i am also a programmer in canada, i started at a paltry 24,000 a year, and am now making just over 30,000, those are before tax numbers of course. i could make more in the US, but i don't care, i like canada, and i am staying.

hey, another interesting thing that the lady from alberta mentioned was that, while alberta has such a great economy, they also have the highest level of per capita credit card debt in canada.

and.. your economy won't last forever, because it's based on the oil fields up north, which are going to dry up sometime in the next 20-50 years.

when I got out of cegep (technical college lets say) with a 3 years degree, I got a job right away making 30K. stayed there for a year then got fed up because the managment wasn't fulfilling its promess of giving me a raise... (long story)

went back to university, then worked for a while as tech support making 36K, while absolutely doing nothing related to my degree...

left that boring job to complete my bachelor(finishing in decembre) and all I'm hearing now is that salaries are about 25-30K for IT people with a bachelor!?!?! WTF happened? I mean this is about 12-15$/hour!! A security guy (non armed) with a high school diploma makes 14$/h starting salary doing absolutly nothing but watching sexy chicks passing by

This is fubar, thats why I dont want stay here anymore... looking for a job anywhere in Europe except the UK.
