Giant and Spundae were partnered up in the beginning. It all kind of depends on which side you hear the story from. The Spundae side usually being the correct side
(touche' mr cool1g)
IMO... it's all about the promoters. But smart promoters will choose a venue that will be successful. The best promoter in town (right now) is Insomniac and I betcha if someone offered them a job at Circus, they'd politely decline (and LOL about after).
edit**
Like I said, these Circus threads are GREAT!
I remember the forums used to get CRAZY back in the day. Avalon vs Circus. Giant vs Spundae. No MOD for the west coast forum. It was AWESOME!!!

I think the biggest obstacle of throwing parties at Circus is its size. That's why most promoters would shy away from working with it. Maybe Circus could think of a way of throwing small cracking parties, as a way of attracting more people to come. That was exactly what happened last Friday at Ruby Skye: a small cracking party of about 50 people turned into 3/4 full main floor.
If you are the owner of a huge venue, I guess somehow you would have to prepare for a small crowd and keep the party going.

Vanguard had become a shit hole and has not been bought out by the SBE guys (famous for their couture clubs n shit) and guess who teamed up with them....... Insomniac! edit* Gene is nearing 50 years in the business (I think he's year 40 or something). He says he plans on retiring at 50 (last I spoke with him a couple of years ago), that's if he doesn't croak before. The problem with this is why would he want to spend a ton of money on remodeling, when he's planning on retiring? |

I think this thread is the most action TA has gotten all month
Circus threads will do that!
It would probably have gone this way on the LMD thread that was deleted.
Edit: I mean talking about Circus.

| Originally posted by able.h what I think Circus should do to stay alive: switch over to another EDM genre that has less competitor in the market (e.g. Dubstep). I think it would make a great place for those young and new generation of Dubstep kids, they were in their teenagers years a couple years ago, but now they should be old enough to go to clubs, and if Circus' management is smart enough, with good marketing they can monopolize the Dubstep genre in Hollywood. Just sayin.. not that I like Dubstep, and if they do switch over to Dubstep, I would probably never land my feet there anymore But I can see the potential for Circus to stay alive and make $$$ |
Also, those who say it's all about the promoter...you are WRONG.
DJs got tired of Circus, more so than any promoter. DJs just started saying they wanted to play in a more modern venue, especially in Los Angeles/Hollywood. The warehouse/dirty-feeling mega-club was a popular thing in the late 90s and early 2000s. By 2002 or 2003 that trend had changed. By 2005 or 2006 it was a complete thing of the past. Circus is still in the past.
Circus is an amazing venue and I am sure a good promoter would jump at the chance to throw parties there if it was made-over. You could throw some crazy 21+ events with big DJs with it's 3,000+ person capacity and make an assload of money if done right.

target the washers! they come in droves and will gladly pay the cover. court the candy kids and burners. they couldn't care less if the venue isn't chic enough. they just want to have fun and dance.

It's interesting to compare Palladium's strategy to Circus, at least for Saturday nights. Far as I know, Palladium isn't exclusive to Insomniac, as they have all kinds of different events such as rock bands, etc. What I have noticed is that the EDM events booked a Palladium are not going every week, they tend to be "special" events every once in awhile with triple headliners and usually either sell out or draw very good crowds.
LMD also did this every few months or so at Circus, take the "Trance Energy" night for example. With several headlining DJ's, good promotion, and strong ticket presales, they were able to get a buzz going about the party and draw in a pretty decent crowd.
Circus is a huge club, and that needs to be used to its advantage. Rather than section it off and have separate small clubs where the sound bleeds all over the place, it would be better to host special events that would fill the place.
With the current state of affairs, there's little possibility of any promoter other than Insomniac bringing in EDM DJ's there every week and drawing decent crowds. It worked different for Spundae & Giant, since they could book Armin, A&B, Ferry, pretty much anybody they wanted. Times are different now, and lesser known DJ's cannot bring the crowds in week after week. Without a good crowd, or expectation that there will be one, people are not going to show up. It's a terrible experience paying for parking and then walking into an empty club that never even begins to fill up, even if the DJ is from the other side of the world.
One strategy might be to book special event EDM nights at Circus. Bring in three good DJ's who are not married to Insomniac, promote it well, and chances are much better there will be a good crowd. Guess that's not the way most clubs work though, instead they have a promoter who tries in vain to fill a huge club against the odds every single week. It's also more of a gamble for the promoter, since if the club doesn't fill and three DJ's must be paid, then it's a financial washout.
Whatever the Palladium does seems to be working very well, though. I know it's a newly remodeled club, but I still hear all kinds of complaints about the sound, this and that...not everyone's going to agree on what a "great" club is. Then again, from what I hear, the Palladium is scheduled to be ripped down and turned into condos, so is it really doing that well? At least it has a good reputation.
Anyway, I think such EDM special event nights hosted by LMD might go over well at Circus, maybe once every few months. People get tired of going to the same clubs over & over, and everyone here seems to be saying they would like to see EDM back at Circus. And if it's not possible due to the way clubs, promoters, etc. work, then how does the Palladium pull it off? I'm sure there must be a way.

the Palladium has been a concert venue for what, 50 years? there have been dj events there a few times a year there for a while, more nowadays due to Insomniac. But IMO its not a fair comparison as the Palladium is a famous concert venue and EDM makes up only a very small % of their bookings.
