-- how do you organize your trance mp3s?

well for starters i use a program called advanced mp3 catalog to keep track of what i have and what not.

my folder structure on compo looks like:

C:\mp3

in that folder:

backed up

cds (where i store full cds)

diverse (where i store all kinda things covers, cue and txt files etc)

dj sets (this folder contains all sets stored in artist name folders)

games and stuff (this is much like diverse folder but for games)

programs (contains all music related programs)

singles (folders like, accapella, FTP,L-vee,M.i.k.e,Recent(where i put recently checked out files)and sorted where everything is allready checked and renamed ARTIST - TITLE.mp3). for singles i dont use a complicated system of folders by artist and type of music coz i think if you know your music and what you have you dont need to, even with thousands of singles like me.), windows got this nice function when you type first letter of the filename it jumps to that letter , and if that aint fast enough i just use advanced mp3 catalog search (wich takes like a millisecond coz its a database not like windows search).

to search for (this folder i put in txt files of singles i'm looking for sometimes i put some info i allready know in those text files, or i name them after some chart list or whatever)

vids (nothing in here, only rarely something in it like that johan gielen small vid on the TA site recently)

wave (where i store small samples)

these folders contain all mp3's on compo.

basicly i recommend everyone to keep it simple, coz you think your making it yourself easier with all them folders when in reality it just getts more clicks away. you coud aswell be using advanced mp3 catalog in that time. i recommend this prog to everyone with a lott of mp3's.

i have a music folder which contains:
tunes (singles)
livesets (downloads)
recordings (guess what it is)
samples (small samples of tunes to be ID'd)

this doesn't mean i'm organised, when you have 14.5 gig of singles in a folder
25 gig of recordings
half gig of livesets
as well as several singles, livesets and recordings mp3 cds

what i want is a program that keeps track of when you last listened to a tune, so if i haven't listened to a good tune for half a year or an unknown tune for 2 years i'll give it a spin (would help when i don't know what to play and means gems won't be forgotten)

also want it to keep track of how often/how many times i listen to each file

does such a thing exist? (if not, it should be made)

Then i have a playlist.txt file, with all the track names, so i can see what i'm listening to.

looks like this:
1.mp3 = Armin van Buuren Live at Club Eau 20-04 2002
2.mp3 = Rank 1 - Airwave (Original Mix)
3.mp3 = Armin van Buuren - Communication (Vincent De Moor Remix)

and so on...

So if i listen to 56.mp3 and i think it's awesome all i have to do is open my playlist.txt and see who the artist is and the tracks name

uh.. that's one of the silliest things i have ever heard, why would you do that?

c:\my music\videos\singles\artist-title.avi
c:\my music\videos\livesets\19XX\dj-venue.avi
c:\to be backed up\

My audio is a bit of a mess for now, except for the live material. Here's how it's set for now (Downbeat is all Ambient-Space/Chill Out stuff and Upbeat is all "Club" material or any material that can be danced):
C:\ADMIN\Audio\Electronic\Downbeat\Albums\(Artist Name)\(Album Name)\CD Number\(Tracks are in here, with this format: 01 - Artist - Song name). For "Various Artists" albums, I make seperate folders in the ...\Albums folder called "Various Artists (Compiled by [Name]).
It goes the same way with the Upbeat directory for albums. For live material, I have a folder labeled "Live Bootlegs" in both the Upbeat and Downbeat folders. In there, I just have all of the long files in this format: Artist - Date in YYYY-MM-DD format - Live at (Event name)
I name tracklists after the MP3 files and put "tracklist" at the end of the name. For the A State of Trance series, I have a special format: A State of Trance - Episode ### (YYYY-MM-DD) - (Artist name) - Part #.

I'm thinking about simplifying all of this by just getting rid of the Upbeat/Downbeat thing because many artists make BOTH now. Also, for single tracks, I have a folder labeled "Singles" and I make sure that "The" does NOT come before the name of the artist (like "The Thrillseekers". I rename those files to "Thrillseekers, The - TRACK TITLE") because in English, "the" isn't a word to sort by.

Here's what the new directories ar going to look like:

...\Audio\Electronic\Albums\Artist Name\Album Title\CD # - CD Title (Like CD 2 - Bright Side)\MP3s, CUE files, TXT files (tracklist/information) of the tracks of the album. CUE and TXT files will be named in "Artist Name - Album Name - CD # - CD Title" format.

...\Audio\Electronic\Live Bootlegs\Name (depending on the circumstances, this can either be in "Artist - YYYY-MM-DD - Live at (Event or Location) - Part number" or "Title (like in series) - Episode, Segment, etc. number (YYYY-MM-DD) - Artist - Part, Hour, etc. number" format. Examples here include: "DJ Tiesto - 2002-02-02 - Live at Dutch Dimension - Part 1" and "A State of Trance - Episode 42 (2002-04-04) - Armin van Buuren - Part 1".

...\Audio\Electronic\Singles\Name (Either in "Artist Name - Song Title" format or "Artist Name, The - Song Title" format)

As far is the organisation of the singles is concerned (hundreds to thousands of tracks in one directory), I'll be making Winamp Playlists (M3U files) so, that I can play specific material in a certain order. I'll title those in either this format: 00 - Playlist - Artist Name - Order Name (examples here could include Chronological, Vinyl/CD/Cassette/DAT/MD/DVD/etc. title, etc.) Or this format: 00 - (Genre) Singles - CD ##.

I'm doing all of this so that it's easier to for people on DC and other places to find all of my material. For other genres, it'll follow either the same (for albums) or a VERY similar structure.

I hope this was easy to understand, however there was really NO easy way for me to put it, as all of what I said above applies to the way I organise my audio. If anyone can't understand, I'll just create a legend and label everything using simple 3-or-less-letter abbreviations (for here ONLY, not on DC, etc.).

did anyone actually bother to read any of this?

Folder for livesets, and then inside that a folder for each month, until it gets to 700mb then another folder, then burn each folder onto cd.

And the same for singles

the cd-r's are in jewel cases. So they don't get scratched and they are protected from the dust.

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Mar-31-2003 23:04:

I had all my mp3s in a folder called mp3. Then I had to format my hard drive and I burned them all onto the cds. I later put them in a folder mp3_1, and since then I created a new folder called mp3_2. All my new stuff I put in there.

Well I have a friend with tons of movies, and he's naming them vlado1, vlado2... (Vlado is his name). And he actually knows which one is which.

\Single
- Bootleg\artist - title

- A\artist - title (for example Allure)
.

- Z\artist - title (for example Zenithal

\Soundtrack

it works good
