am i the only one that laments expandability/flexibility offered by the old MP? As a showpiece, sure - it looks very Apple-ish. But for someone who may not be content with graphics, HD, etc... this is more like:

Nah, you're missing the point.

The concept is about making the thing modular by using external devices as expansions. With that amount of TB2 ports just about anything can be connected to it, and the "fixed" aspect of the base unit itself will hopefully mean reliability, which is a prime requisite in a pro environment (which this is obviously aimed at).

The old mac pros weren't flawless - I used to do 3rd party tech support the Mac Pros and they were solid but still had weird problems, just ask L4C about his random logic board issues. A lot of these random problems were caused by incredibly difficult to pinpoint combinations of certain HDD's and certain videocards, with particular revisions of logic boards.

TBH, the more I think about it, the more this concept makes sense; in the studios I worked in we were all using 4+ year old Mac Pros and the only things that got changed were hard drives and PTHD cards. This allows a studio better accessibility and easier function.

The trash bin thing is funny but you have to realize the size of the new mac pro; it's 10 inches tall and 6" wide. In fact, if I wasn't white, it would closely resemble my penile appendage.

A very wise TA member predicted this a year ago.

A very, very wise TA member.

Now the wait is over I'm buying a Mac Mini

Lol, true that.

But really, a mini? By the time you add a nice screen and all the other bits you're at a imac which is cheaper and faster?

i want an iMac so bad hehe. If only I could justify dropping the coin on it.

I have the old MacPro and honestly, I never used any sort of expansion card on it except for HD's and memory. All my gear is either USB or Firewire so to me, I don't see a need for an expansion slot. Back in the days, definitely, but today, nah. I do kinda like the idea of daisy chaining HD's better, but I don't like the idea of having an octopus on my desk.

I bought my imac in 2008 for $1200 new. Apart from putting new RAM ($50) and an SSD in it $180 it has served me flawlessly for over 5 years now.

So $1430 divided by 5 = $286 per year. I spend more on meals out in two weeks than that, and the trusty imac has a good couple more years left in it.

The Mac will be a secondary machine, mainly for screenflow. I've got a 40" Bravia I can plug it into and all my samples etc are already on the external I already own. I can get an as new i5/500GB/8GB for less than 400 and the equivalent iMac is more than twice that second hand.

If it was going to be a main computer then I'd probably get a 2009-2010 Mac Pro for a grand or so.

Good choice ! great bang for buck which is hard to get with apple!

I got mine a few months ago for around 850, 2.6ghz quadcore mini, works like a dream

yeah that's a great point. That's completely reasonable.

to be honest, i'm jumping ship if logic 10 is not released by christmas. I mean it is fucking ridiculous.

There is no way i can double up on something that well , i mean what the fuck is the point I guess.

So the first benchmarks have been leaked, although they are apparently still working on hardware and software issues so they probably will be revised.

Also impressions of the newer pro have leaked:

You know though, very little of what's in that picture will be actually internal in most 'pro' studios anyway. Storage, interfacing etc will all be racked up.

i thought people were suppose to store in the cloud now? not using discs? and who needs dvd+blueray and a hdmi selector device. yeah i like the new one better. i just dont like OSX.

Yeah, I love how they've put an apogee duet, AV selector interface, and all the power cables and powerbars in the picture to denote what used to be in the old mac pro

@palm - what's the gripe with OSX. I have one mac, and 3 x PC's (one XP, one W7 and one w8).

Windows 8 feels like a windows 7 with a custom skin. I honestly can't tell any difference. And windows 7 is like XP with a built in indexing and search function.

and OSX feels like windows without the bugs or maintenance

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jul-06-2013 07:35:

they have just unveiled an optical cable that transfers thunderbolt protocol allowing you to extend the current cable by 100 feet.

But PC has thunderbolt as well so it isn't really a selling point. I think the main issue is the disconnect between their software which is antiquated and their hardware which looks great but you would look rather daft running logic 9 on the new mac pro.

Posted by Juan Paulino on Jul-06-2013 20:04:

Do you think they'll have PCI Express flash on laptops? or is that impossible?

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jul-06-2013 20:42:

pretty sure it is already in the works. Thunderbolt is pcie so the laptops they currently sell already have the pcie bus built in.

Posted by Juan Paulino on Jul-06-2013 21:35:

That means the stock flash is gonna be better then anything in the market, no need to upgrade.

its the mouse-behaviour, the fonts, the buttons are missplaced, maximize windows etc etc. many little irritating things. also i like to put together stuff myself and do small upgrades all the time. i just dont like it anymore, i did like it on a laptop though mostly because the trackpad is awesome on macbooks, better than windows for that. but as a working station it just didnt work for me. especially mouse behaviour, placement of buttons, menus etc etc.

Yes, bitches. Word has it, that new Mac Pro's are days away (some saying the 16th) and other saying for sure by the end of the month.

A legitimate quote has surfaced for a fully maxed out Pro (12 core, 1TB flash drive, 64gb Ram, Dual head AMD D700 Video card etc)- $9,500.
