Personally his playing style just doesn't fit on me.
Neither does Gielen and Corsten, similar dj's.
I got respect for him but convince me that he creates awsome journeys... (you can't huh )
I got one set of him that is actually "good" and that's
paul van dyk - essential mix Live at Home London (23.04.2000)
(except from darude then....)

I was about to mention that Essential Mix. He really sets the mood perfectly in that one. Starts off with a nice melodic track, then kicks into a more techy tune and then back again to a major uplifting tune that'll make you go crazy. After that...the energry goes up and down throughout the set, hitting "climax" about 3-4 times throughout the set.
This is one thing that I've noticed about PvD these days...he doesn't craft his sets the way he used to, of course, I wouldn't go as far as you and put him in the same class as Corsten and Gielen, because at least his uplifting, imo, is good uplifting and not cheesed out to the max, and they're his style, so to speak. You rarely see Gielen drop something that PvD drops, unless its a real big uplifting tune.

all a matter of perspective jokes bro heh heh heh

i agree with your previous post arturo, when pvd laid down so many prog tracks in his sets, it started to turn me off too, he spins like a god but IMO prog just ain't him.

I admit I haven't seen him live yet, but like Webbie argued you have people and people, the ones that go to a party and go nuts on the tunes played there, and you have people who conclude the whole set instead of the party-degree.
I know I'll go nuts too if I see him live, just because the bangin tracks he plays.
To go further on people and people, if im at a party im the first kind of people and if I'm home I'm the other kind of people, the one that is satisfied at the end of a set because the sets took you for a whole 120 minutes by the throat and didn't let you go, you see what I'm trying to say.
This whole thread is spoken as a 2nd kind of people.
I know damn well if I see him live I would go nuts and if he spins somewhere in ma country im the first one to see him.
But just think of my point of view now, away from the live experience.
If I listen to a pvd set here I put it off after 30 minutes because it takes you nowhere...see...?

fair play to you then

Yeah I know what your saying, just thought I'd ask the question.

If I go see a DJ I will be going nuts at the time, thats what i paid my money for, not to stand around and be anal about the set structure etc. But when I get home i'll usually have a chat with mates about the tunes that was played etc and then maybe i'll see if it was as good as I thought at the time.

I've seen PVD live twice, last October of last year and April of this year. I have all his CD's.

Here is my opinion:

1.If you like deep bass lines that consist of fast sixteenth notes or anything more then du da du da du da du da, don't listen to PVD.

2. If you like strings or very warm pads, don't listen to PVD

3. If you don't like pop and fizz then don't listen to PVD You will hear four hours of kick snare kick snare kick snare...

Both times I saw him I went crazy. Completely hyped, I loved it, but taken on a journey? NO. He is an excellent DJ, but I have heard better.

Opinion of course.

So keep it cool.

My personal opinion on Paul van Dyk is that he's a great Dj to see live, he spins all the uplifting stuff etc... to get the crowd going...
But if I may compare him with dj's as Oakey, Sasha, Joof, etc...
I miss something in his sets, and that's the lack of atmosphere, I dont wanna hurt the pvd fans here, but if I compare his sets another dj I can say his spinning style is shortest to Johan Gielen.
Where is the time PVD builds his sets to absolute climaxes?
He just spins all the uplifting (and well known) tunes into eachother constantly letting the crowd go insane (see the Gielen comparison?)
I mean I much more like sets with a "warmer" atmosphere and with now and then absolute toppers and near the end absolutely building towards a climax. And here's why I like some easier tracks (also progressive) at the start of sets, not just throwing in all the bangin track the one after the other...
I wanna take the Parks & Wilson ess mix 2000 as an example.
This sets just floods over from atmosphere and the last 40 minutes are just breathtaking with absolute toppers. (check this one out if you didn't hear it yet!)
I dunno how it is for other people but when I started to listen to trance I also preferred PVD, Ferry etc...because all of the bangin tracks played. But what makes a Dj great is creating a journey through trance music (northern exposure on top here) and that's something PVD lacks (no offence here, he's a crowd dj).
If I go to clubs here in Belgium and some residents play stuff (I take Atmoz as an example) the crowd goes absolutely nuts on the hard club tunes, jump etc.. whatever...
Ok The crowd goes insane so the dj is great would one say...that's why a lot of u like PVD (If I see him life I will go insane too, I admit) but the fact of creating an "atmosphere" around a set proves to be a great dj (for me then)
And there's why I'm not a PVD, Ferry and Gielen fan.

Hey! Remember I like the tunes they play but not the set

Don't flame me now, just think twice about what I said.

hate to say this..but ur sounding like a progressive priest like ste said last week.

its sad..ur gone from this genre. I respect progressive in fact i love it and all but it seems like ur now into one genre..ur in love with it and when u hear armin...corsten..pvd..its all too "cheesy for u"..

I love pvd..why? becuase he is unique..i can throw his POD cd and just kick back and listen to originality...i can throw a cd by crystal method and start drinking beer to it.
i can throw a GU cd and just try to do some homework while listening
i can throw on a oakey essential mix set and go to sleep and dream about it.
IT seems like ur lacking an openmind to all musik(no offense ok)

*throws on Cosmic Gate-Raging (Storm) ft Jan Johnston*

you have to understand that this musik has dj's who have their own following/followers..and if uve moved on to other tastes then so be it...

Negative, im open for every kind of music, like I said before I like the tracks he plays but not the set, it's a whole difference.
Plz read everything I posted.
And why do I like Oakey, Tiesto and Joof, it's not progressive all the way.

See Him Live.

You cannot judge a DJ by just listening to mix CDs and livesets, you've got to go and see them live.

Myself I like some of PvD's tunes but I really dont care for his sets. Its nothing against PvD its just I dont like hearing uplifting tunes with killer breakdowns over and over again. The only type of sets I like are ones that start slow and take you for a ride. Somethin that your not dancing crazy to the whole time but definately tapping your foot or bobbing your head...know what I mean? Think Sander Kleinenbergh, Satoshi Tomiie, Parks And Wilson, Hybrid, Sasha, Digweed, etc. Speaking of which I'm listening to Satoshi Tomiie - NuBreed - Global Underground Disc 2 right now and it simply ownz me. Mmmm...

Another factor to keep in mind is these radio sets are abridged versions of a longer set. Anyone who has seen Paul play a 4+ hour set will know Paul does spin a lot of upbeat non-trancey progressive tunes. I've been to 6-8 hour PvD sets at Twilo and I can absolutely tell you it's very very progressive in the beginning. Then a few trance tracks and then back to progressive. The only time when Paul goes to uplifting is the last hour.

If you want to hear progressive, listen to Paul's Love From Above set part 3 (12-07-02). Most people have the uplifting first half of his set but not the 2nd or 3rd.

Scott, you took the Words right out of my mouth. The fact that we, as intelligent listeners, are fortunate enough to hear our favorite dj sets as mp3s has a good side and bad. The good side obviously being that we can hear the tracks they're playing ATM, and simply enjoy it. The bad side of this is that we get disappointed when we hear sets with the same tracks, and even same transitions...the fact of the matter is the dj, including PVD, isnt spinning for the mp3 listeners, but rather, for those who are actually at the event. On a personal note, Paul's set from Knebworth in 2001 was the day after I saw him in Boston, and it was almost the same exact set...so what? He's not spinning for people who follow him day-to-day...that would get boring.

Everyone has their own opinion in regards to what you like and dont like, but the experience of listening to a great dj such as PVD live is completely different than just listening to his recorded sets, which most of the time, are broadcasted from "Massive" events.

PS> Starfox, I think his first hour at SF was amazing..for goodness sake he dropped Sunstroke! And you were going crazy if my memory serves me correct!
