for example the latest trend of selfies holding signs with the hashtag #bringbackourgirls in order to make the poster feel morally superior for standing up in solidarity for the kidnapped girls in nigeria, whom until this news broke they gave exactly zero shits about for the past 15 years the Islamic insurgency has been on going and they still dont know sweet fuck all about it other than what fox news, CNN and the internets tell them in sound bites....

but the icing on the cake is that some people honestly believe that their hash tagging and status updating makes one iota of difference.... like the leaders of Boko Haram somehow read your status update and feel such overwhelming shame that trisha "i sucked every football players cock in college" smith has outed them on her facebook page that they are going to miraculously return each innocent little girl to their families and promise to restore peace to the region....

news flash, A: boko haram probably doesn't have internet access, B: they most certainly don't give a flying fuck about your facebook status and C: neither do the rest of us lol

If you want to make a difference, volunteer with an NGO working in that area, donate money or fund raise for that organization, hell just do anything that will actually generate some tangible results other than be the next conversation topic for humanities students while they serve me 7$ coffees at Starbucks......

just look at that Kony 2012 campaign and all the good it did.......

on a side note, the motivational pictures and inspiring quotes are also nearly unbearable.... or anything with a hash tag.... that whole phenomenon is just as heinous as the phrases "YOLO" and "Derp"

You mean to tell me this is a lie?

On the one hand, I see it generally as "look what a good person I am that I care about these worldly events", and I do see it as that for the most part. On the other hand, it does spread awareness of the issues that Americans are often accused of being blind to. Maybe not in depth, but more than if it weren't on fb at all.

Hashtags are very useful on Instagram, and I imagine Twitter, but I think people had a bad taste for them by the time FB integrated them. I only use them on it as a joke.

Precisely because it doesn't work

Nah, who am I kidding? I just like hitting "See Translation" only to see the very same thing written below the original text with the words "Translated by Bing"

These same people also tend to "join" every FB protest event that comes down the pike - you know, the kind where 10,000 people are invited, 4,000 say they're attending, and 150 actually show up.

OMFG YES.

HOLY SHIT. I can't stand this.

Edit: Anyways, I'm actually guilty of a few of the ones posted in this thread lol. At least I was. But I like to think I smartened up
