Rolling Stone interview which I actually enjoyed quite a bit. I know nothing about him, haven't really read or watched older interviews.

Just looked at the limited edition pics. One of interviews posted here said there would be a bonus track ink-printed on cardstock.

Really looking forward to the release.

Ehhh... a very minor resemblance. There's so much shit going on in Minipops it's likely to be coincidental. Although I must say I don't really like it, it sound pretty dated IDM fare.

Another interview. I'm actually really digging these interviews with him.

My favorite quote was def:

"I wanted to do gigs where you've just got mirrors on the stage, and then you light the crowd so all they can see is themselves. It's just like, 'There you go, it's you, you cunts.'"

garbage

I love how after over 10 years of rare, overly short, cryptic interviews he just goes out and does like 5-6 super indepth interviews talking about his life, divorce, kids and all kinds of shit you never expected him to talk about. I guess that's his style though, does things when you don't expect them and either barely at all or full on.

Cheesy IDM garbage, indeed. Not a single decent track.

If you want to hear what good IDM actually sounds like, listen to something like MDK ‎ A Friend Is A Stranger You Haven't Met Yet. Relatively unheard-of, completely blows this nonsense out of the water.

Relatively unknown indeed, this person?

Sounds like a rejected cut from the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack tbh~

If you say so, but have you heard the other 23 tracks? I'm guessing you haven't.

I'll probably listen a few times before making a call. His material can be full of nuance or straight up madness...he can throw a lot at you, sonically.

It's a way in for people, isn't it? That's a start, the commercial things. And if you're really into it, you can look further, investigate and find people like me [laughs].

Well said. Something I agree with wholeheartedly.

Bonus track from the Japanese release.

edit: seen a Discogs entry for a Betamax release in Kyrgystan.

Heh. Track nine on that is the guy who I record Absorb with, and his girlfriend on vocals.

As for Syro... this is pretty conservative, but I can't really get into all the detuned melodies, as with a lot of IDM. I have no problem with experimental music but I only really like conventional tonality. In the Pitchfork interview, RDJ calls the likes of me "people who like following rules" and says he deliberately uses idiosyncratic scales because "your brain has to change shape to accept it. And once it's changed shape, then you have changed as a person, in a tiny way". Which is great and all that, and probably my brain is too rooted in conventional tonality to appreciate the nuance of his melodies, but to me it just sounds a bit clichd at this point to hear detuned bleepy melodies in a manic tapestry of quirky beats. Is it actually new any more? Is it changing my brain to hear this kind of thing again? Or is it just a geeky little niche that's been thoroughly investigated over the past 20 years? The album throws so much at you in every single track, and that combined with the unconventional tonality means I'm not really hearing it "fully", I'm only really taking in the zoomed-out IDM form of the whole thing. The details can't possibly sink in after one listen, but unlike, say, SAW 85-92, I'm not really inclined to go back and learn the album inside out in case I discover it's just a particularly elaborate bundle of braindance tropes.

Posted by enydo on Sep-27-2014 01:33:

I kind of have the exact opposite feeling, at this point at least. I didn't like minipops much at all the first time I heard it, and my first listen through Syro was very much "eh, ok". But after going through it a few more times, it's really starting to grow on me.

The whole detuned thing your describing is usually a turn off for me as well (for instance, some of the tracks on SAW Vol. 2, love em as much as I do, get really grating to me after looping so many times -see #10 side 1 lollll), but in the context of Syro, that stuff doesn't seem to stand out as much. Maybe it's all the hyper-percussion and weird mutating song structures that accompany a lot of it?

Personal favzzzz:

180db_ [130]
CIRCLONT14 [152.97][shrymoming mix]
syro u473t8+e [141.98][piezoluminescence mix]

Its definitely an album that gets better with each listen. All my favorite albums always are "Just okay" on my first listen.. We'll see, I'm gonna listen to Syro another few times before I make judgement.

I'm not qualified to dissect and scrutinize the technical intricacies of this album (most of which I'm sure I'm missing), but I liked it upon a cursory listen; I felt it was tastefully understated, and at no point did I feel like I was being oversold on the "APHEX TWIN!" of it all.

the first 4 tracks are just amazing. totally loving this album so far

Bump this since I wasnt around for this discussion.

Absolute fn masterpiece. I went from disliking it during my first listen to now thinking its the best album I have heard this decade. There is just so much going on that its nearly impossible to absorb it unless you listen to it over and over again. Notes and beats, tones, melodies etc start to emerge, each one more beautiful than the previous. I really really love this album. Not up there with his early 90s work, but probably my favorite of his albums since saw 2. He reminds me a lot of David Foster Wallace, in that his art is definitely in that post modern experimental tradition but still resonates on an emotional level with me. But I am definitely not a music theorist or critic, so dont expect me to be able to make a great argument why its so great.
