I mean a populace that has been given accurate information about preventative measures, which a country like the US can disseminate quickly and efficiently. What exactly are you mocking? I just showed you that not all of America consists of an "informed populace," hence the panic. Hence, "you obviously don't know the American people." But by all means continue talking about the incubated semen, it's an interesting subject.

I never mentioned anything about panic or the prevention of panic. The comment about informing the public was related to preventing the spread of infection. Maybe you should read back through the thread and remind yourself of what you're arguing about.

Lots of Florida kids around here have probably been through at least one major hurricane. I was in Naples when Wilma made Landfall as a 5. The stores were pretty gutted, people were gouging fresh water in the streets and we lost power for a month; but it just wasn't that bad. Obviously an actual pandemic would be a different scenario, especially one with such a protracted incubation, like Ebola- but the relative panic would be well-rooted in isolation from one another, which Americans in particular are actually rather apt at, if you ask me.

When we speak of panic and a misinformed population in North America, though, it just doesn't quite compare to these West African nations. In Guinea last month, for example:

There's a gaping cultural disconnect when it comes to herd welfare in these countries. Compounded I suppose by the fact that Guinea happens to be 80%+ Muslim, and the West has a problematic track record with healthcare and Muslim communities, the seeds of distrust have probably inflated the spread and the death rate far beyond what any western nation would experience.

I can't wait to catch ebola.

That's quite a chilling interview in its implications for the less developed parts of the world. It's been my hypothesis for a while (I've probably repeated it on TA) that the human population explosion will be forcefully halted in the next century by some epidemic or plague that wipes out large parts of the third world. In any natural ecosystem, when the population of one species grows unsustainably it is always culled by natural forces, restoring equilibrium. We often assume we're above nature but I still think the same process will happen on a global scale to the human population. I was even mulling over a sci-fi premise of how human society might develop in the aftermath of such an event.
