So i had an interview for a BI Analyst position last week and created a Power Point highlighting my skill set and how it's related to that position. has anyone done that before.. ???

the guy did ask if i had tableau experience and dealing with dashboards.

i said not directly, but worked off the data that was collected.. i think i fudged that up

The BI world is a bit interesting, with that being said, no I've never made my resume into a power point. I've done PDF versions of it and send it along with word docs, but not ppt's.

I think the general rule in the BI world is familiarizing yourself with industry technology and standards (gartner etc) keep up to date with platform news (SFDC purchases ET etc) and ultimately have a deep knowledge of how data drives business and business process management.

tools are flashy, they are meant to appeal to users in it that you want to empower your end users to interact with the data.

also watched the introduction videos they have on tableau's website. they also provide you with a data set to practice.

i don't have a preference per se but the company i'm working for this summer uses Tableau, so i'm learning more about companies like it and what they do.

i'm in discovery for my acxiom/sas build at the moment, DW rebuild is stressful and requirements process is time consuming.

I work in Finance (mutual funds)

so far it looks pretty cool... dashboard development has a "wizard" type of a process. so the final PDF output looks something like this:

this assumes the data quality is aligned, anything looks pretty when its in charts, graphs, buttons, and gauges but it's all useless if your DQ is sub-80%

The front end BI stuff is always flashy and cool, the real intelligence is behind the DW and infrastructure, especially when you get into master data management / customer segmentation / and user behavior.

yeah that's what i do. data management and some business analysis... just started doing the dashboard dev stuff recently... wanted to see what the best way of learning it, but i'm starting to think that trial and error is the way to go.

dashboards is really a measure of business, think KPI's

so you want to ask business questions that you are solving like

what's the total revenue MTD and YTD?
what's the total revenue YTD vs PYTD? Growth %?
what's the total orders MTD and YTD?

etc etc

Often times, the dashboard approach is really a 'load into memory' refresh vs a direct query against the database. This requires some data set automation since dashboards load from memory, especially those who provide multi-device functionality or platform integration (like a dashboard in an outlook email).
