Psytrance is the least commercial, they never play it on the radio and it's better than european trance.

European trance is only good for a synthpop influence, IMO.

Goa doesnt build nicely.. its over dramatized with the middle synths choppy... ive heard psytrance alot as well.. esp @ underground parties..its played more than trance... European trance is good for everything its what defines trance in general the roots my friend the roots

IMO

also euro trance is better than psytrance.. better builds better kick ins.. better rush.. (Even when your not high )

I agree with you in part, although I still think the basis of commercial means trying to make a crapload of money. However making trance for the most part wont get you those ends, since the record companies basically pick and choose who makes it and who doesn't, ************ of who has the best sound. A lot of trance artists still have dayjobs and little or no mainstream exposure. This probably stems from the DJ phemonemon. I dont listen to DJ's much myself, only real trance artists who dont use their DJ name recognition to make their productions more popular.

I think modern rock & hip-hop is notoriously commercial and made just for the money. The record companies also will assmeble rock bands like Matchbox20 and tell them to write songs for the radios, and then the record company will pick the songs that they feel will have the best success and put them on an album.

I just hope Trance stays underground in the U.S.!!

Posted by AntronVee on Oct-29-2002 03:27:

I'm from colorado and my answer to this post is it all depends on your definition of commercial...for instance if you mean commercial by trance being made for money then of course it's "commercial." in that reguards almost every type of music is "commercial." sure a lot of artists make trance music for the love of the music and to please fans, but you're kidding yourself if you don't think making money off of it is another reason they are doing it.

if you mean commercial as in widespread, popular music listened to then i'd say it's definitely not commercial in the U.S. sure maybe some states, such as new york have a bigger audience for trance but across the U.S. as a whole there is sooooo many people that don't know what trance is and haven't experienced it, or if they have they probably called it techno now when you consider commercial as in widespread, popular music listened to in europe that is a different story. if that is your definition of commercial then yes trance is commercial in europe...and that's not bad considering the definition of commercial in this case.

if your definition of commercial is the really cheesy stuff meant to lure in the trance newbies who don't know what quality stuff is then there is only a select few tracks and producers that would classify trance as commercial. tracks like sandstorm, and producers like alice deejay...uuugh, i can't stand it!!! for instance i went to see DJ Micro at The Church, probably the best club colorado has to offer for trance and he dropped DJ Kim - Jetlag(Alphazone remix) and i was going fucking nuts, everyone else around me was like what the hell is this?! but watch some local shitty dj play Basement Jaxx - Wheres Your Head At and Darude - Sandstorm and the crowd fucking loves it...i can't stand that shit!

now for my personal definition of commercial and my final response...i view something commercial as being something catchy with no real depth or quality. it's mostly made for an ignorant audience to make a lot of money really quickly. so of course theres always going to be a "commercial" side to all types of music. that's the reason i can't stand sandstorm or wheres your head at or daft punk's one more time...all the idiots that think they listen to trance bring those songs up in conversations about trance. you ask them to list five producers then they're stumped cuz their dumbasses don't know 5 producers. you ask me, i'll list a bunch in 10 seconds. dumonde, flutlicht, dj scot project, push(m.i.k.e.), cosmic gate, lange, rank1....the list goes on in on. sooo...there's some commercial trance, but that doesn't make trance as a whole less and less appealing to me. if an idiot wants to blast sandstorm out of his speakers i'll just laugh at him and blast dumonde!!!

a short and blunt response...trance is not commercial shit, but there is shitty commercial trance. thanks for listening, cheers.

I genuinely believe that, just as with any kind of music genre, such as hip-hop, folk, rock, that tracks will be put together just to sell, because there is a sure formula. Just as with trance, put some banging melody and a girl crying about love together, you've got some Ian van Dahl pile of poo, and people go round calling it trance.
Now it's harder to find quality, original trance tracks, but of course they are still out there, they will always be out there!!
But I definitely feel that the aura that comes with liking trance is fading, people put you down for it nowadays.

No offence, but how many of this bloody threads are we going to have asking this same question over and over again in different semantics???

Unless there's some 'commitee' that goes around stamping gendres of music for every song out there, its going to be a personal decision and a question of the tastes of the person asking. Simple.

Nicely put. When I think of the term "commercial" I think of a genre that is so widespread and popular that producers start to make that kind of music just to make money, not because they are passionate about it. I'm not saying everyone that makes that kind of music does it soley for money though. I'd consider U.S. "pop" to be commercial, but, you have someone like Venessa Carlton who makes "pop", but she seems to have a true interest and passion for the music she writes. However, for every Vanessa Carlton, you have 5 Britney Spears who make a video, shake their ass, and collect their fat paycheck. That's what commercial means to me.

This allows me to vent a lot of things to ppl who can actually comprehend the things that i am sayin

So here goes, i really hate it when the topic of music comes up in conversation b/c ppl invariably think that they know about the electronic music industry/community when they have no fucking clue. Most of the time when i say that i listen to trance their response is "I don't like techno" Furthermore try to explain the difference to them and they have no clue. For example my neighbor was frustrated that my roommate was making fun of hip hop (her favorite genre) so she came back with "well no one likes your techno music." That was all it took for the both of us to get on her case about being ignorant, but assuming that she knew what she was talking about.

I live in Colorado, not exactly the trance capital of the US, or world for that matter. When i go out to the bar and i hear a dj play music the break down is this, Rap and R&B 95% of the time and then he drops in succession, alice deejay - better off alone, daft punk - one more time, and darude - sandstorm (the only electronic music played all night). At which point i am drunk enough that i wanna go up to the booth and fuckin spit on the guy However the sad fact is, that everyone on the dance floor knows all the words to these tracks Meanwhile im in the corner wishing there was a gun nearby. I say this because this is "commercial" cheese trance and therefore most people assume that all electronic music is this way. When that is clearly not the case to us ta's!!!!!!!!!

So i go to a "pseudo-rave" last weekend with Dj Digityl (my roommate and over all good friend ) and it occurs to us that a lot of the ppl aren't there for the music. For example one of the dj's opened his set w/ iio - at the end (scumfrog remix) and we were goin nuts and ppl around us were like whats with those 2 Another one dropped Ligaya and no one knew that track either, (ill admit that its not my favorite tune but it was way better when spun in a club). However later on in the night some other dj spun Basement Jaxx - Wheres your head at, and everybody went nuts, it was at that point we decided maybe it was time to go home

IMO cheese equals commercial

eh Fatboy Slim/Chemical Brothers & Prodigy all had huge successes in the US, and they were not trance, so I wouldn't say trance is the biggest genre in the states.

Posted by DJDigDug on Oct-29-2002 07:36:

Well as far as where im at trance is not comercial at all, when i am asked what i am listening to and i say trance i get a wide range of responses mostly "whats that" so for me it isnt comercial but i dont really care if trance is comercial or not, sure there is going to be shitty trakcs thrown together to make cash but i believe for the most part the DJs/producers are loving the music as much as we are so the music comes from the heart giving it a great sound. Every style of music has its comercial tracks and its super underground. Im tired of worrying about if something is comercial or not fuck it, if you like the music listen to it that is what its for. I for one love trance regardless of how much popularity it gains. well that is My Opinion..

EDIT:: Just read mindshifters response talking about trying to explain difference of trance and techno all i can say is AMEN i hear ya on that no one listens to it to them its all techno till they get hooked latter in life.

Hrmm i used to listen to darude sandstorm alot.. i still liked it even when it hit the radio.. I love dumonde as well.. but just because something has gone mainstream doesnt mean you should dump it.. think of it technically.. doyou like trance cause no one else does?
no you like trance because of the way it sounds.. i love club trance esp alot of hte mainstream stuff. Remember it wasnt always mainstream.. does that mean if you blast dumonde - never look back that im gonna blast some unknown progressive track? noo.. cause thats lame.. ill just nod my head and say yea.. this guy/girl likes the music.. its what ill assume.. i assume most ppl dont like things that are commercial because they are commercial.. thats very superficial

Vanessa has no good synthwork, I want to hear pop singers play synths, instead of the usual alternative crap.

She's not fecking Ferry Corsten, she's a goddamn pop artist. If everybody played synths then they're wouldn't be enough variety in music. It's nice to see an artist who can atleast play some kind of real musical instrument. It takes more skill to play the piano than most pop artists could ever dream of having.

good point, but i didn't say i didnt like sandstorm because it was "cheese." i said i couldnt stand how the ones that go to a club only go nuts to that song. it's like they went there to wait and hear the dj play that one song so they could have a good time...they don't even give the other songs a chance cuz those songs aren't the ones they heard on the radio. i'm just bitter at how you hear some kid blasting sandstorm and he thinks hes the shit and a trance king even though that is probably the only song he has...i liked sandstorm when it hit the radio...but after living in my town it was horribly overplayed by the ones who didn't even know what they were listening to. that's why i have a certain irritation when it comes to that song. cheers.

You can see where people get their ideas about trance though. If I only knew the trance that was on the radio I would also think of trance as commercial shit (i.e., created with the intention of making money rather than for the love of it (and if anyone says that Kelly Lorenna tunes are made for the love of it I'll shoot them)). Stuff like that, Ian van Dahl, Pappendorf etc isn't meant to be played in clubs any more than Britney Spears is, it's meant to sell. The trouble is that people call it trance. It's not, it's really bad pop music.

paffendorf has been around for quite some time so i disregard that remark.. sure his lyrics' are cheesy but he has good synths and style.. flying to the moon remix.. and call me now! oh i love that tune.. and its old too.. revolutionary to trance my friend

as well Ian van dahl - will I is an amazing tune in itself.. soo many remixes but nothing compares to the original.. music is what you make of it.. who cares if someone makes a profit doing it .. its a living for some you know? and if you live making money on something you most probably love it.. i dont see producers spending 8 hours in a studio trying to make the crapiest song.. they are actually thinking about the composition.. sure hte lyrichs may be cheesy sometimes but eh. so what its humor..

progressive for an example. way deeper than the usual 4 strings, rank 1, airscape stuff.. though I'm not saying deeper trance doesn't exist, but most of the tracks aren't really underground.

yes, but it also takes skill to compose & arrange a synth tune.

please define deeper.. cause your just going off tangent... do you mean.. you dont understand it if its deeper? less predictable or what? is deeper better? worse? eplain cause your just making blaint comment towards club trance

it's hard to be defined.. only with examples. Deepest trance around would be something like James Holden's tracks.. kinda like: tracks that are made to blow up the roof in a party ain't deep.. and calm tracks that have a nice vibe are the opposite.

It doesn't mean deeper is better.. for me it depends on the mood. But yes I prefer it to the "hard" stuff like Cosmic Gate, Svenson & Gielen sorta thing.

sorry if I didn't explain myself well.. but it's hard to explain and my english isn't the best.
