am i that obvious
hehe but ya i admit they're flawed... i said so too. they werent meant to be taken literaly, i thought most people would know what left and right for each issue meant (in general) but i gave some examples nonetheless to kinda get a feel for where each side is.
btw feel free to add more catagories if any of you want...

me ...

Religion: Common Sense
Economy: Common Sense
Foreign Policy: Common Sense
Social Issues: Common Sense

Basically I try not to become to enmeshed or incensed in one particular viewpoint. I usually try to base my arguments less so on emotion and more so on fact. If evidence arises that leans towards a particular direction that I previously opposed, I'm not afraid to change my attitude. Generally though, I'm leftist. Strict separation of church and state, free economy with government monitoring, just plain common sense with foreign policy, and pro choice/freedom of liberties for social issues.

Re: get to know your TA rivals

Not sure if I'll be involved a lot over here or not, but here's a basic breakdown:

Religion:
I'm not religious in the traditional sense (ie: I don't really believe in any mainstream religion, though I go for a little bit of Buddhism, Taoism, and Aboriginal beliefs) so I don't think religion should have any place in the government.

I'm radical in the sense that I think the US government should either remove "In God We Trust" from the coinage, remove the refs to God in the pledge of allegience, and stop referring to God every time disaster strikes or stop referring to itself as having this Church/State seperation, because this *clearly* isn't the case as the country exists today.

Economy:
Radical leftist. I'm a socialist and think that Capitalism has essentially screwed over most of the world for the sake of a few rich white guys.

Foreign:
Centre, like Thor I think the UN is the wave of the future. I don't think any country should be completely isolated, but nor do I think they should be free to do as they please to another...this kind of puts my foreign policy into a "Moral Rights" framework, ie: your country can do anything they like as long as it isn't harming me, or causing harm to the world wide environment (ie: forcing US to curtail emissions which cause acid rain in Canada, and so forth).

Social:
Radical leftist.

Yes on abortion, though I'm largely apathetic about this issue; frankly, the debate bores me.

Yes on assisted suicide because it should be your right to commit suicide.

Yes for anything involving gays because I'm gay.

Yes on legal drugs, for the simple fact that a lot of the violence that occurs is due to the value of illegal drugs, and that the cost of imprisoning drug offenders is ridiculous. Drugs are another thing that fall under the category of "If you're only harming yourself, feel free to do it" for me.

Yes on Euthanasia, but only if the person has a living will stating that that's what they would want.

Yes on pushing egalatarian values along with individualism ones in public schools. Individualism is good *up to a point*, but we need to teach our kids that strong community values and family ties are important as well.

It's strange that "common sense" isn't as common as it should be.

You know, I'd love to see what you guys define common sense as, since it's more than a little subjective IMHO...

i can suppose common sense is not experimenting with nuclear fission on ur genitals (hhehe aaplz )

yea, it is though to define common sense...seriously though, i think it can be something like "if u can kill urself doing it, common sense tells u not to do it".

Wow ... that's one of the most insightful comments that I've heard in a while. You are, however, absolutely correct. Very well, I'm a firm believer in intelligent, INFREQUENT sense. I think moore's law has an application to stupid people as well so the less people the better.

Some of you may be interested in this test:

www.politicalcompass.org

Asks a few questions then plots your political orientation on a map, comparing it to historical figures and modern day (UK) politicians. I'm a moderate leftie and quite heavily skewed to the "libertarian" side of things for those interested. Most of the other people on the board I got this from (a philosophy board) were also leftist libertarians.

Tres amusement.

Personally I think it's a bit limiting to stick to either left or right, because it is possible to be both in the same category...

I lean towards the left personally, but I don't consider that when debating or making my mind up on an issue....

Posted by Philby on Oct-30-2002 15:24:

hehe when i saw the title i thought this would be a more personal thing, like find out which TAs you hate or something

from what you've said in the first post i think i am towards the left, but i dont really pay too much attention to politics, i generally bag the government when they do something stupid, and other governments too hehe sometimes i wonder if being a uni student is turning me into a hippy!
