Mr Mystery: That was a damn nice mix. Great track selection, great sequencing and great progression. Nothing else to add.

I had a quick flick through this last week and feared the worst - it sounded like the kind of ultra-sentimental, twee and twinkly web-prog that blights Beatport these days. However, a full listen through revealed it wasn't as bad as I feared. You definitely went down that route, and unfortunately there just isn't enough quality in the dwindling progressive breaks sphere these days to make a full mix of genuinely good music. Despite that, this did the stated job quite effectively - it was soft, pretty, easy to listen to and did a decent job of waking me up after a foggy over-sleep, even if it is Tuesday and not Sunday.

On a technical note the flow and pacing was probably the strongest point, and the way the set unfolded was the key part in "selling" the tracks to me. The mixing itself was a bit rougher than I'd expect from you - some very brief transitions and some key clashes that were only avoided by the paucity of the mixing time. But you did choose good cueing points and matched the structures of the tunes well enough, so even if the transitions themselves occasionally had a bit of "WTF?" factor, the flow reasserted itself straight away.

Yeah, I noticed what you mean about the quick cuts after a later playback. It's not something I usually do, but a couple of the tracks had some oddities I needed to work around.

I also had to leave out several tracks that I liked a lot, but as they were significantly darker in tone they did not fit in at all.

Definitely a nice mix, Nik. I like how soft and smooth everything was, although one track that didn't fit the bill that nearly threw me off the whole set was Digitonal - We Three. I really didn't care for that one, but the rest of the tunes were very enjoyable. Way to kick off the challenge

Posted by ziptnf on Aug-30-2016 18:03:

Just a reminder, as of today there is ONE MONTH left in the challenge. I usually put in extensions to accommodate most people so don't be too freaked out, but now might be a good time for a short status update from our competitors? Just to see where we all are.

For me, I'm about 70% finished with my tracklist, still trying to wrap up the discovery/search process and move onto the programming/arrangement. I'm aiming to release this coming Sunday.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-30-2016 18:14:

My mix is pretty much done, there's just one more track I can't resist trying to squeeze in there before I stick a fork in it.

Attempting to conclude my track-selection process soon, but I just keep finding music I like

That's a good problem to have

Been a bit busy but after Electric Zoo this weekend, stuff will finally slow down and I hope to bang out a mix or two over the next 2 weeks. Have a good idea of the tracklist for my mix.

So, I was initially going to do something more ambient and chilled out, but I realised after Mr Mystery's entry that there was a danger of the thread being flooded with "soothing" mixes. Instead, I decided to revive a concept I've been toying around with for over a year but never really finished off.

The result is a mix of techno of the deep, melodic, acid-inflected variety. Pretty low tempo and not too hard-hitting, with a flow that undulates leisurely up and then down again. I think it works quite well at creating a general "lazy, mellow Sunday afternoon" vibe. The tracks aren't particularly new, and perhaps techno fans will find the Sandwell District track an overly-obvious ending, but it seemed the kind of mix that track was designed to close.

Ziptnf - Street Soul [jazzhop/hip-hop]

I had to try and think of a way to approach this theme. What do I listen to on Sunday afternoons? My Spotify playlist, generally, which consists of music anywhere from classic rock to full-on psytrance. I don't always listen to EDM, in fact I listen rather infrequently. But I didn't want to throw together a mix of random ska/punk/rap/techno, so I decided to make a mix that would be good for a Sunday afternoon. Picked out some of the hip hop tunes I've been listening to lately and made a mix. The first 15 minutes are jazzy instrumental hip-hop but the rest has vocals. Enjoy!

Esbe - Float [Cult Classic]
Kondor - Calm Evening [self-release]
DJ Okawari - Animal Forest [Libyus]
DJ Okawari - Encounter [Libyus]
Blazo - Natural Green [Blazo]
Kero One - Keep It Alive (Blazo remix) [self-release]
Thomas Prime - Believe In Us ft. Awon [Cult Classic]
Re:plus - Sol (feat Cise Starr) [Goontrax]
Nas - The Message [Columbia]
Mobb Deep - Shook Ones pt II [All City]
Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli) - Respiration ft. Common [Rawkus]
Large Professor - I Juswanna Chill [Paul Sea]
Jurassic 5 - The Influence [Interscope]
Funky DL - Don't Even Try It [Hyde Out]
Hus - Love Spaceship (Seasons End Remix) [Digi Crate]
Re:plus - Imagine ft. The 49ers [Goontrax]

Oi!

Posted by ziptnf on Sep-05-2016 21:19:

I meant all those genres together! (As my typical Sunday afternoon playlist appears) Nobody wants to hear Led Zeppelin and Xerox & Illumination in the same mix

Posted by Lews on Sep-05-2016 21:21:

Are you sure about that? Depending on how you do it... I've considered playing Miles Davis and Oliver Lieb in the same mix, before

Posted by Lews on Sep-06-2016 13:05:

Mystery, I liked your mix overall, except the opening track does make it a bit difficult to actually listen to when hungover Like some other people said, I found the mixing rather abrupt, which was mostly just shocking because you're normally smoother. The flow/programming was good, though. Not exactly my favourite genre, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Jack, this is probably my favourite mix of yours in some time - since Rapid Transit 3, most likely. Perfect mellow melodic techno, in my book. No real comments to make, other than this was absolutely great.

Nick, this is definitely one of my favourite mixes of yours ever. There was one or two vocals I didn't particularly like, but the majority were good, and I really liked what you did with the flow/programming. One question, which is what's your source for the Funky DL track? It sounds differently than my recording, more hollow or echo-y or something. Great stuff, though - I do love jazzy hip-hop, which we don't get enough of around here. Shame Ted Promo stopped putting them out / left this place. Anyways, really enjoyable stuff.

Setting the bar high, you three

In all fairness to myself, that was only three months ago.

But thank you.

Thanks, Joseph! (Do you prefer Joe?) One of the things I also liked most about this mix is the flow. I was afraid the instrumentals at the beginning would detract from the hip-hop and it would feel disjointed but I actually think it set the stage instead, framing the hip-hop and the overall vibe of the mix as a sorta jazzy chilled-out atmosphere. I was also worried that the Nas/Mobb Deep/Black Star tracks (being slightly more "gangsta" than the ones with Japanese-inspired jazzhop beats) wouldn't fit but I feel like they actually did.

The Funky DL track is directly from Hyde Out Production's First Collection and it sounds the same as similar copies on Spotify/YouTube and such, so I'm not sure quite what version you have.

Thanks for the listen! Good luck on yours, I look forward to it!

I really don't know why those random noises are there at the beginning of the song. They don't fit at all.

It's kinda funny - I'm really into this kind of sound, yet I've never really listened to it. That's why I've never heard any of these tracks so I don't even know which ones are supposed to be older.

It all blends very nicely together. So much so, in fact, that I kind of zoned out somewhere around the halfway point. Though considering the theme of the mix, I don't consider that a bad thing at all.

I would like to sign up for this challenge.
It seems like we're just making a hip hop mix no problem.

So are you trying to say my mix took no effort?
