Btw I bought an awesome shoe rack off Amazon a couple weeks ago.

The only joke I can make this early about racks and the Brazilian jungle is so predictable I won't say "tits & pubes" just for the sake of it.

Because it would be childish to say "tits & pubes" like that for no reason. There'll be no "tits & pubes" in this post.

It's down there even for me, and I'm here in South America

Hello! It is Friday - Part 74 Part deux (now merged)

Now that Mercury is no longer in retrograde you should have no excuses.

What say you?

Posted by Silky Johnson on Sep-23-2016 15:22:

It's actually part 74. MSZ just started this thread 3 days early. Can you merge them?

You're still already on the same continent. Whatever, if you don't actually want opinions then shut it.

Anyone ever see The Motorcycle Diaries. I saw it a long time ago but remember enjoying it.

Hemingway doesn't simply take travel advice.

I've had many friends and family vacation in Central America, all of whom had nothing but good things to say.

I know I was thinking the same thing while typing it. How about Don Quixote?

Posting this in a conference about something, but it's too early in the morning to figure out what people are talking about.

Tomorrow will be more exciting though, as I'll go explore the Amazon with the other professors. To be fair, exploring Walmart would be more exciting than snoozing in this auditorium

I've just finished reading a book set in Manaus as it happens, Marcus. Until England were scheduled to play Italy there in the World Cup I'd never heard of the place, now it's everywhere.

Posted by DJ RANN on Sep-23-2016 18:58:

My brother spends half the year there every year and it's absolutely fucking beautiful.

He travels about 500 mile north of manaus, up the rio negro - some crazy shit happens up there though (pirates, river battles, etc).

Posted by OrangestO on Sep-23-2016 19:42:

Psh, Hemingway. So overrated.

Really!? Fiction or nonfiction? I thought for a moment it could've been Fordlandia but then remembered it was as far from Manaus as London is from Glasgow.

Speaking of which, I'm glad you're seeing it everywhere! I've come to love this city about as much as London (my favourite city after my hometown). It's no world city yet, but the population doubled in my lifetime and it became a lot more modern. It went from being a backwater to the 7th city in the country. Not sure you're hearing good things about it though

Why does he do it, and could you tell him that's pretty bad-ass?

My wife did a similar journey up the Solimões river, although it was a lot less "exciting" - she just taught literature in a county (município) the size of Ireland, but with a population of just 17 thousand people. She said the inhabitants are really warm and hard-working, but it's so far remote from everything the place is our (Wet &) Wild West (e.g. the opposition candidate for mayor had just had his house burnt down by an arsonist).
