So the challenge starts Sunday evening, I wanted to float the two directions by the challengers first.

1) Pick one theme for everyone
2) Distribute each theme randomly

With such a diverse and interesting list of themes, I am leaning towards #2 but I can understand if a bunch of people just want to bash out a Peak Hours mix.

Any last thoughts?

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Jul-18-2017 14:01:

Well, I already stated that bashing out a peak hours set would be fun, but now I'm kinda leaning for option 2. Just give me whatever.

Posted by planetaryplayer on Jul-18-2017 16:10:

IMO your challenge, your rules. i would say one theme for all. or maybe for added challenge combine two themes such as a peak time set for a summer party outdoors

I would highly recommend choosing one theme, not distributing them randomly. A lot of the fun of the theme challenge is seeing how different individuals, that one knows, interpret a given theme differently, in my opinion.

Sand Leaper, I was myself thinking of the US' Southern States when suggesting 'Deep South', but I wished to leave it open to each individual to interpret those two words as they would - perhaps to some it would suggest the deepest jungles of the Dark Continent! Always fun to leave some ambiguity in these things...

Okay, I'm aware that I'm just flip-flopping now, but I just noticed that a horror theme was suggested. That would be awesome.

Okay I think I have a good idea how to do this thing now.

Lews, are you in man? I can extend to the end of October.

I tried a bunch of ways to make a single selection where everybody could interpret a theme differently, and I realized that I was just robbing myself and others of a host of other great ideas. The range of subtle to vast differences in interpretation is indeed the best part of a theme challenge, but I simply couldn't select just one. So I assigned one to everyone. I cut "Autumn" from the selection choices because I couldn't particularly identify a distinguished feature of music that I would associate with Fall.

I hope everyone is happy with their assignments. Since the rules are basically up to me, I have to make tough decisions. So I didn't leave it up to RNG this time; I specifically selected the themes for each challenger.

Good luck, have fun, and happy mixing!

(P.S. Lews if you still want in, you can take Autumn or a theme of my choice)

Deep South? Hmm, that's gonna be pretty tough... Only thing that immediately comes to mind is this:

I'll have to get creative!

Just have that on repeat for an hour and you're done

Posted by Lews on Jul-24-2017 09:26:

I'm happy to take Autumn, Nick

Not much of a challenge, but alright. The last two I did were quite conceptual and multifaceted, so I guess making something very straightforward for a change wouldn't hurt. I have two ideas of where to go with this, so I just need to choose one of them. The weather has to get a bit worse before I start trawling stores online, though.

I have never felt like DJ's should be constricted to 4x4 or EDM. I feel like in this challenge you can play any genre you want: rock, blues, bluegrass, whatever. Just because this is TranceAddict doesn't mean it has to be trance! Last year I did a hip-hop mix for my challenge, and it went over quite well.

That's good, because I might be dropping some death metal.

right now my head is equating rooftop with lounge music. basically if i didn't strike gold and get peak time id be having to do some digging.

Personally, I'm really hoping you manage to work at least one song from the Silent Hill game series into your mix...

Maybe not that directly, but there will be something very similar for sure. I have a pretty interesting concept in mind, but I don't know if I can manage to pull it off.

What would be a good online store to find some more... unconventional (ie. non-dance) music? Amazon?

I've gotten a lot of stuff on Amazon but iirc the bitrate is 256, which may be a dealbreaker for you.

I'll have to see if there are any other options, otherwise that'll have to do. I know what I want to play, but actually finding playable versions seems to be a bit difficult.

Ziptnf - Electric Summer [retro/synthwave]

I've had a great summer; I got a promotion and my wife is pregnant with our first child. I have also attended a few great local music shows recently and enjoyed a lot of new sounds and styles. I had two distinct directions to take this mix: go the housey route or go full blown retro, 80's synthwave style.

The synthwave scene can tend to have a reputation of being loaded with children of the late 80's and early 90's that romance about times that they hardly remember, basing their productions on cult classics and popular music from that decade. Despite this, and sifting through hundreds of forcibly ironic tracks with bad lyrics about high schools that only exist in movies, I was able to find a solid tracklist that helps frame my wonderful summer. Hopefully you will find a fresh, dreamy, cheesy lyric-free mix that may remind you of your favorite memories.

Classixx - Hanging Gardens [Innovative Leisure]
Anoraak - Skyline [Endless Summer]
Sellorekt/LA Dreams - Sudden Moves [Sellorekt/LA Dreams]
FM-84 - Neon Sunrise [FM-84]
Tycho - See [Ghostly International]
The Midnight - Kick Drums & Red Wine [The Midnight]
Phaserland - Smolder [Rosso Corsa]
Beckett - Rush [InnerDark]
D/A/D - Backbone of the Night [Rosso Corsa]
Dance With The Dead - Waves [Dance With The Dead]
StardonE - Love Fighter [Nightrunners]
Sung - Zodiac [Geoffrey Graven]
Epoch - ZZ (Double Zeta) [Retro Promenade]
Volkor X - The Bomb [Planet Cracker]

Enjoy!

Helluva mix, Nick! I'm in love with the song 25 minutes in, in particular - it reminds me of something straight out of an early 90's shmup for Sega CD or PC Engine CD! And ditto for the song that comes right after that.

Thanks Luke! The songs you are referring to are:

Phaserland - Smolder [Rosso Corsa]
Beckett - Rush [InnerDark]

I appreciate the listen! Figured this one would be right up your alley.

I thought it was going to be one theme for everyone?

I already explained my reasoning a couple pages ago. It was a difficult decision but there were too many nice ideas to just pick one.
