Going waaaay back here. From 1998/9. Never heard it in a set or a club but one of my all time faves.

Extreme Trax - Don't Stop (Yves deruyter Mix)

Posted by AlphaStarred on Mar-16-2018 19:04:

From 1996, some of the best breakbeat acid trax I've ever heard:

Melodic techno beauty from 1997:

A C.J. Bolland banger from 1996, one of my favs. from him:

1994 melodic/ambient banger:

I'm not claiming underratedness, but this has been a favourite of mine since first hearing it on a (commercial) mixed compilation CD back in 2001, perhaps late 2000. Released in Oct 2000. There's also a John Johnson remix. Love several of JJ's works of that era, but this remix not so much.

Basically same story as in the post above, apart from the John Johnson reference. Tracks from Dutch soil from the '00-'01 era that have never left me.

The Infernal Machine - Realistic (original mix), originally on Dutch label Sadie Records. I never really understood why it had to be licensed by Vandit Records 3-4 years later only for the original to be released together with a Chris Liebing remix of all remixes.

"Written and produced by Berry van Gardingen and Nicolas Freeman" - the latter obviously being Nic Vegter, of Solid Globe who, however, put out much nicer things when he was not Solid Globe (e.g. Classified Project).

Vandit also released the nomads - the holy land spirit in 2006 some 9 years after it was originally released on CD by ZYX label in Germany...

the track was first played in 1998 by oakenfold and van dyk, dont even think it was ID'd until 2001 so Vandit have a history of releasing things way too late for anyone to care.

I understand they put something out with a remix by Roger Shah as if I recall correctly he was being very popular as DJ Shah with the mainstream trance labels precisely at the time of that Vandit release. At least that seems to make sense to the onlooker. But nine years is a long time to pick precisely that track for a re-release.

Speaking of rereleases and to hark back to my previous post:

Epsilon 9 - Lifeformation (Classified Project remix) - released in 2002 alongside an Infernal Machine remix which isn't extremely different. Original version released on a 1996 12" EP and in 1997 on a cd-maxi (as Epsylon 9), out of Australia, onto Forbidden Planet Records.

Love both sides of this record, not bad for 2006.

This!

I've always thought the production on this track is smooth af. The original mix of Midtone - Pearl, which came with a Darren Christian remix on Duty Free Recordings towards the end of 2002. Midtone were Dee McAuley and Graeme Laverty, whose other production aliases include Montero, under which more housey materials were released on e.g. Renaissance, and several of Laverty's on Belfast's Red 'n Raw Recordings.
I believe the only other Midtone track is the Midtone remix of Oliver Lieb pres. Smoked - Metropolis, unsurprisingly on that track's remix pack on Duty Free - also very nice.

Keoki - Veronica (Deepsky's Hot Auntie Remix).

This isn't up on youtube and probably because I've only heard like one or two other dj's play it. Granted this was just a track from a remix-album that didn't do well but it is a great track and it was severely underrated.

I thought "World Clique - Don't Do It (Original Mix) (2000)" was pretty good. It still isn't very widely known within the trance music community... but at least DJ Tiesto included it on his ISOS3 mixed CD.

World Clique - Don't Do It (Original Mix) (2000)

It's very... well, trancy. I like it!

DJ Stigma used to play this a lot in 2000-2002. It probably isn't all that famous due to being released on a tiny UK label from Warwickshire and not having a big mega breakdown. The flip is pretty nice, too, even if the offbeat bassline is a bit OTT:

George Winkworth actually released another tune under the Slipstream alias a few years ago:

It sounds pretty turn of Y2K-ish and fairly pleasant compared to the overcompressed, midrangey hell epic trance is in these days, but it's also far too similar to an average M.I.K.E production from that era.

Very similar indeed, hard to believe it's actually not a M.I.K.E./Push production upon listening. Not too bad, but nothing special or unique, either, unfortunately.

I only know Krakatao from the Electric Daisy Carnival CD, but it's not surprising, as I haven't listened to many sets from 2000-2001, where it may have been played more often. Still, compared to other releases on that label and the year it was released in, it seems to remain relatively obscure to this day.

one of the more underrated Nadia Ali vocals

Yes it really sucks you in, very minimal/subtle progression makes for good trancey stuff.

So many good tracks posted in here...thanks everyone!

Compared to other tracks he created, 'The Fifth Element' seems underrated.

This is basically 'Fire' minus the wicked main lead

And the Matrix version

Posted by Salegon on May-10-2018 20:13:

You're right, "Fire" has a wicked lead, plus it's a more complete track overall. Still, "Fifth Element" puts emphasis on other, more atmospheric elements of the track making it a very listenable piece of music.

Didn't know the Matrix version, good one!

Tracks like this were one of the things I liked the most about trance around Y2K. The genre as a whole sounded moodier, darker and had a lot more attention to detail. There'd also be a lot of tracks like this around that you could really build up to the bigger breakdowns with:

You could even mix it with techno quite easily for even more variation. Now, this kind of stuff runs at around 120 BPM, and is more or less completely separated from trance, where DJs sound like an EDM gig. Le sigh.
