They knew how much they would be paid when they took the job in the first place. If they are paid a 40% wage increase, what will stop the police from striking and demanding 50%?

2)Where is this extra money for the huge pay increase coming from. usually increased taxs, which most people dont like to pay
3) If firefighters get a 40% pay rise it will mean that teachers, nurses, doctors would all expect a pay rise, because they would feel their job is just as important
4)Firefighting is not a full time job, and most have second jobs, which isnt because they have poor wages, more because they have the time to get them
5)Due to substitutionn effects it may in the long run cause a drop in firefighters.

Anyway that is why they shouldnt

A 11% rise has been offered, which would mean they are payed around the same as teachers, nurses etc. So i think they should have accepted that

I think that 40% is madness, yes they risk their life everyday, but they dont have much stress with their job like teachers and nurses.

Anyway i think they should get payed in line with other public services, but 40% is way too much for how mnay hours they work for, and the fact that atm the goverment cant afford it, which could effect education, health, or mean even higher taxs

So that is the economic view

hehe

*falls asleep*

Fly knows the deal, its all very well saying that they should get the money but everybody would rip if there was a tax rise. Everybodys so tight in this country.

Yup

Posted by DJ Mikey Mike on Nov-15-2002 13:22:

They certainly deserve more money than what they getting.. but.. They knew what type of work they were getting into when they set out to be a firefighter, and they knew how much money they would be getting to do this. So if they didnt like the look of the pay check, why did they join???

But yea i still think they deserve an increase in salary, even if its not 40%. That does seem a bit high, and will be a huge blow to the government and quite a large increase in taxes. Im sure there will be some sort of comprimise..

But the firefighters hav picked a well shitty time to go on strike with the threat of an terrorist attack on the UK looking very promising

And i hear some train drivers are refusing to drive coz of the dangers. There is at least 1 incident a day where the fire brigade are need on the tracks. And if this means my train is cancelled to get to GK on the 29th, i will not be a happy bunny lol

Sorry if this offends anyone but fuck em they know the risks when they start the job and what they will get payed they work 36 hours a week for 20000 a year thats dam good rate per hour most people work 50 hours a week for that amount these days. If they dont like the job they can quit but a 40% pay rise they can FUCK OFF!!! and all they are doing now is risking peoples lives by being greedy if the goverment gives in on this the teachers and everyone will be at it next.

Posted by ChrisT on Nov-18-2002 13:45:

they shouldnt. if it is such a shite paid job why did they go in to the fire fighters business?

Posted by Choon Spinner on Nov-18-2002 18:05:

Angry

This issue continues to fucking piss me off.

Im currently going through the selection process of becoming a Firefighter, its all i have ever wanted to do, and i dont give a shit about the pay, its about job satisfcation in my opinion.

However, having been shown videos of stuff that Firefighters have to see and put up with, i would say they deserve a pay rise. They've said that they will except 20% as a benchmark, but 11% takes the piss when you think there will be inflation etc...it works out to be around a 4% pay rise.

Teachers dont deserve a pay rise, they get paid enough for the job they do. As for Police, they get paid enough too in my opinion, but of course, everybody wants more money. My Dad is a Policeman and he thinks the Fire Brigade are fully justified for their strike, and if the Government werent such wankers, they wouldnt have to go on strike in the First place. Of course, the NHS and such like needs more money pumped into it aswell.

The Firefighters i know, have all said they arent doing this just for themselves, they want to show other under-paid services, such as nurses and such like, that if they deserve more money, then they have to show the government. I dont think this country has realised how needy Firefighters are until this strike occured.
The reason the Wholetime Firefighters want a pay rise, is because they cant afford to live in the cities where they work, with house prices on the rise all the time, on the wage they're on. And they dont get free accomadation either! About the only thing they do get free, is their Uniform and equipment.
And if they cant afford to live in the cities (where all the Full Time Fire Stations are...) then they have to live elsewhere, which then means they have to travel to get to their stations which then in turn means they dont have alot of time on ther hands to do moonlighting jobs. And why should they spend their rest days working anyway? They've just spent 4 days saving peoples lives etc...surely they deserve 4 days off? The Pigs get rest days, so why shouldnt the Fire Service.

Its time for the Government to take their fingers out, stop wasting money on pointless wars which acheive nothing and only satisfy the hunger for war that President Bush has, Pull the troops out of Nothern Ireland and let the Irish kill each other if thats what they want, stop giving themselves pay rises which they dont fucking need, stop wasting the tax payers money on stuff like, as Neo said, two Jaguars and country houses and pointless wasteful trips to the US twice a week; Let the fucking yankee tosser come over here for an ass-reaming if thats what he wants.
Why do the MP's need more money? All they do is argue and indulge in homosexual acts or lie through their teeth and even go to prison! They're not the ones who pick up the remains of families off of the road after a large Road Accident, or the ones who risk their own lives to preserve others. Even in the event of a war the Government and Royal Family would all be tucked up cosy and warm in some underground nuclear bunker, while we get frazzled. Infact, the Ryal family do absolutely FUCK all for this country, apart from a few shitty speeches every year, and they have lots of money. Take it from them to give to the Firefighters and other public services.
Perhaps we should set fire to Blair and his Ugly Wife, see if they think the job of the public services is important then. TWATS!

The problem all boils down to the Government having their priorities wrong.

Put the UKTA in power, that will sort it all!! House of Commons and other Royal Palaces and Stately homes will all become a place of clubs, drugs, parties and trance music.

Apologies for the gabbling about bullshit, just this subject really gets me going. The day i meet Blair, he's gonna get a peice of my mind.

Josh.

Posted by irishclubbing on Nov-19-2002 15:23:

If the fire fighters get a rise then the rest of the public sector will be expecting a rise also!

The economy will collapse and we'll all starve!!

Give them 16% and it should do them or they should just go work for Tesco !

Posted by Volksjoolz on Nov-19-2002 15:45:

Yeah i agfree with you theb!

the fireservice are just as important as the teachers/ambulance/NHS/police so why should they expect to be paid much more??!

sory choon spinner but i disagree with you!..my mates a fireman and i've told him the same.

If the government agrees to such a pay increase then all the public sector will demand it as well..and who has to lump the bill for it??.....yes you guessed it..US!! (taxpayers!)

i also think the union leader- Gilchrist is a power hungey ****!..just look at the way he reckons he owns everything on the news! what a twat!

only my opnion though!

...Mine also.

Posted by Choon Spinner on Nov-19-2002 17:43:

Lmao!

The firefighters are NOT asking to be paid more than any of the opther public services! As they have stated time and time again, they want to show those people who are underpaid that if they want more money, they should do something about it. The government dont respond to the word please.
The Police cant strike as they have no Union, but why not do what the Americans did and have a "Blue Flu" day, where the whole force went off sick for a couple of days.

And the fact that at the moment, Nurses, Police and Teachers are getting more than firefighters, states that they dont think they should be paid more. They're asking for FAIR pay. They want to be paid the same. At the moment, starting wages for a Firefighter is 18,000. My Dad is a bog standard Police Officer patrolling the streets and he's on 30,000. In many years of service, he has saved one life. The Firefighters save lives every day.
So shouldnt they at least get the same?? They're NOT asking to be paid much more!

I think people should get all the facts right before slating the Fire Service. What will it take for people to see how important a Firefighters job is? Their house catching Fire whilst they sleep?

Josh

Posted by Volksjoolz on Nov-20-2002 10:07:

As i said my mates a fireman and yes ok so he does save lives (theres no queston about that) but the majority of his time at work is either spent drinking coffee or reading or bloody sleeping!..

now how many other jobs can people get paid to sleep?!!! (this is his words not mine!)

yes like i said i agree that they need a pay rise..but you again forgot to mention about the ambulance service or the NHS in general. Teachers are now getting a fairer pay rate, but nurses still struggle on 15.000

30,000 for sleeping 3/4's of the year seems bloody good to me!...i duno what other people think?!

If they had gone about it at a different angle, then the fire service could have got the pay rate they wanted. Instd they've got a got a power hungrey representitive who thinks he's Al Pacino and is trying to black mail the government!..

if could be arsed i'd join the fire service with the wages their on!..let alone the 30,000 theyr asking for!

Posted by Choon Spinner on Nov-20-2002 12:54:

Hallo Again,

I have to agree with you 100% Volksjoolz, with regards to the way that Andy Gilchrist has handled it. Although, there are always two ways to the story, as the Government are being wankers also.
If they just said "ok, we'll give you 25,000" then it would be settled.

And if they went about sorting the Economy out and prioritising the ways they spend the countries money, im damn sure everyone could get a fairer wage. The public services are what keep this country up and running in my opinion, and make it what it is.

But yeh, totally agree with what you're saying volks'. What annoyes me is people abusing the Firefighters. People stopping their cars and shouting at them. Cos they would almost certainly be shouting at the Fire Service for help when their house is on fire or they're trapped in their car.

Regards,

Josh

Posted by Volksjoolz on Nov-20-2002 13:09:

Anyone who shout at firefighters in the streets are just adding fuel to the fire (sorry couldn't help meself! lol )

Your correct with the fact that its the public services that run the country..as i work in the public sector myself and am on a shit wage too!

maybe i should go on strike??!!!!!

Posted by Luke Terry on Nov-20-2002 13:25:

Cool

yes but not 40%, they should have sorted this out long ago, basically they are stuuborn fucks not willing to embrace technology such as water guns on mobile units. personally i think this striking is just sad and if they go for this 8 day effort, sack the lot of them and let the army take over and get trained up to use the red engines then hire new firefighters or the sacked ones who are willing to justify the cause.

Posted by Volksjoolz on Nov-22-2002 11:46:

Now they'r seriously taking the piss!

now who in theyr right mind would reject a 16% pay rise?!! i could only dream of a pay increase that large!

it means that fire fighters would be on a 25000 starting wage! ..but they want more?!

GREEDY BASTARDS!!

another persons views on the fire strikes!

--- Its illegal for fire fighters to strike in almost every other country

--- Italian fireman get 12,000 a year- with cost of living adjustment, thats 15,000 by our standards

--- If the soldiers cant do the job as they say, they are risking lives and they are admitting it

--- A blue collar, public service occupation does not warrant 30k+ per year. If thats what you want, join the private sector, there are hundreds of people quite happy to do it for 21k

--- They sound like doctors- 'I do 96hrs a week because I came in 7am Monday and am here until 7am tomorrow'. No, muppet, you are ON CALL for 96 hours. Then 4 days off. Where you have another job anyway.

--- Nurses who get attacked in hospital, Policeman who get shot at, Soldiers who get bombed, ambulance drivers that get abuse (see that program on Cardiff Ambulance service? OMG!)...better give them all the same rise on this basis. The fact that you 'risk your life' isnt an issue here, many public servants do- and for less money!

--- Public sector pay WILL NEVER = Private sector pay. PM gets 100k a year- in the private sector his job would pay 6 figures easy. To compare yourselves to tube drivers on 31k, etc is irellevent.

--- THE MAJORITY of the public arent behind you, and we are the ones that would have to pay. Blackmail is not the answer. Lancaster firebrigade are picketing outside the station with a sign saying 'honk if you support us'. Ihave driven past it about 30 times; in all those times, Ive heard ONE horn.

--- Do they really think there is 650,000,000 lieing around that we can use to meet these demands?

--- If there was, whats wrong with asking you to increase your skills?

--- Finally, if you want 30k a year, go sell. As a public servant you need to want to do it as a vocation, and please dont claim you are on the poverty line because I just dont believe it.
