there are some geners u have forgotten, add a "psychedelic trance" street with the sub generes of:
progresive psychedelic trance
minimal psychedelic trance
full-on psychedelic trance
techno-psychedelic trance

and goa does not includes that genres, this genre evolved from techno, and goa evolved from psychedelic trance, there should be also a link beetween psychedelic trance and ambient (shpongle - if any1 knows), and i think u should ask some proffessional people bout this, like salesmans in records stores...

oh, and what about rock, regae, psychedelic rock, deaf metal, metal, etc.???

I'm working on it. In fact, you're not the first one to tell me that there are too many sub-genres, but I just can't ignore most of them. Obviously, there are some genres that are a lot more famous than others (I'd never compare acid house to Rio Tekno-Funk), but I'd like to show how rich the history of electronic music is. I'll merge as many sub-genres as possible, so it'll be easier to navigate (for example, I'll merge Rio Tekno-funk into Rio Funk, which cannot be ignored because it's too frigging funny But, when you click for its history, I'll talk about Rio Tekno-Funk as well. This way, you won't get confused with so many names, unless you DO want to learn about them). Also, I'll divide this map (as Ishkur did) to explain everything (therefore, if you're looking for Goa, you won't need to see the whole structure of Drum'n'bass). It'll be a lot more organised in the flash version, trust me

but it also has its funny side

Talla brought techno to germany, that's why he's between detroit techno and german techno

I'll do some research on it, thanks As a matter of fact, you've got pm

The map would be way too confusing if I had added all the non-electronic genres that influenced electronic music. I tried to add them when I first made the map, but I realised it would be better just to mention about their importance in the description of the genres that were influenced by them.

tovarish, if i were u, i would put acid techno as far away from detroit techno as possible... they are just waaaaaaaaaaaayyy too different... and farther from german techno as well. in fact, 90% of acid *techno* comes from the UK

hehe, it's nothing... it's just because that "it's the thought that counts" thing sounds funny

Posted by PSi on Nov-18-2002 13:44:

yo maaz, there are alot of genres there that you just seemed to have made up, and the map is bloody confusing. The best would have been some simple tree diagram. But dont make up sub genres, becasue you'll be mis-informing alot of ppl around here, particular the 'new to electronica' generation.

later

The problem of choosing a tree diagram is that the way music evolved was not that simple... genres merge, genres split, ...

A-ha, I'm glad that you noticed Yeah, the london underground inspired me, and I wanted to do something similar By the way, you said you wanted a full sized one when I finish? I'll send you through e-mail, is that all right? If anyone else wants, just tell me

Psy-trance with guitar riffs.
Look for
Johann - Stranded (Delta Mix)
Radiotrance - Nuclear Test (it's available for download at their official website: www.radiotrance.ru)
Many tunes from Sun Project...
...and it kicks arse

u figured it all wrong, psytrance is a genre of trance, not rock, all of ur map is messed up, i think u catagorised the map by the styles that go well togather, the map should be catagorised by history, and what are all those sub genres u added????
listen more to the genres u wrote, like prog and trance and bass (?), and then rewrite ur map, cos its clearly that u wrote this map with not much thought in it...

Posted by rajay on Nov-19-2002 00:13:

i took at class at my school on the history of electronic dance music and our professor had a map that looked just like that- everything was arranged differently though- He had jungle coming from breakbeat and reggae and trance from ambient and hardcore just to name a few. Ill try to find my notes from the class and post the map he had. There was a pretty good argument behind everything he had on there.

Posted by Sarcoman on Nov-19-2002 00:17:

Someone mentioned earlier that goa came from psytrance. I disagree, I think goa came first. Goa is named after the portugese colony in India where goa trance first originated. Because it was a familiar tourist spot, many people took it back to their native countries. Ive been listening to Goa for 7 years, and love both goa and psytrance. I didnt hear about psytrance till about 3 years ago.

this essay seems to have some pretty good info on the history of goa

I give it my *thumbs up*. Way to go.

I concur. I wrote an essay on the history of electronic music my senior year of high school, and I wish I would've thought of using a diagram like this.

I was just joking about how ridiculous all these sub genres are

Posted by Lira on Nov-19-2002 20:41:

Hi everyone! Well, don't ask me why, but my computer refused to connect all day long and I've got just 5 min to reply, so I'll be brief

rajay: Reggae was indeed important for jungle (almost as much as break beat). The difference was: reggae is not a genre of electronic music (I didn't add any non-electronic genres, otherwise, the map would be even more complicated than now). You might be asking "What the heck has hardcore got to do with it?"... I'll write a decent explanation tomorrow, I promise

ehcsztein: Thanks for the link, I'll read it tomorrow. If you guys find any pages about the history of electronic music, don't hesitate and tell me

I wish I could go on answering all of you, but the clock is not helping much, I'll write later Anyway, thanks for the help!

psytrance was presented in detroit at the 80s, goa trance evolved mainly in the 90s, i could be wrong, but i belive im right cos the people who told me that are some producers that have more knowlege in this area then i do, i dont know the exact history, but i do know for sure that psy-trance (not as we know it today, as a subgenre of techno, which it still is...) was presented in detroit in the 80s, and goa evolved in.. goa, later, u heard of psy later cos its not so popular as goa, i belive we need to ask some proffesionals what they think bout this, anyway, its the music that counts, oh, and listen to me mama...
