I bet on some other board, people are trashing trance.
People like what's popular, that's what MAKES it popular. So you have to expect, especially in the US, to deal with people wanting you to play Nelly. Or people asking to freestyle over your trance beats (I HATE THAT!)
While I personally prefer trance over any other genre, I am not going to sit around and judge people because they like hip hop. Someone said people are brainwashed by MTV and the like. I totally agree, but it doesn't make the music invalid. And I sure as hell am not going to make sweeping generalizations about the people who listen to or produce hip hop.
I think we TAs have a sense of arrogance about us, myself included. When trance or dance music is commercialized, we call it cheese. As if we don't want it to become popular. (I'm only talking US here, I have no basis to talk about Europe) We want the unheard stuff in our collections. Have you listened to any underground hip hop music? Some of the talent is amazing.
Just rambling thoughts after reading this thread.
I don't really hate hip-hop. I actually kind of like it, but I don't limit myself to just one type of music. I respect every type of music.
Fuck Hip Hop they gotta stop.
Honestly, I don't understand some of the posts in this thread. If those djs who are "forced" to spin crap that they don't like, why in god's name do they own the crap they don't like? I personally don't like hip-hop, whatever you want to call it. Therefore, I don't own any hip-hop. Again, therefore, I can't play it even if it was requested of me.
If you hate the music, don't buy it. It's as simple as that! Those who do, really have to question what they are doing/complaining about. If you buy the music, then obviously it's so that you can spin it. If you don't want to spin it, then don't buy it. But you buy it because you know that is what the crowd you spin for wants to here.
You have two clear choices here.
1. You shut up and realise that you are spinning the crap you don't like because you'd rather spin that than not at all. Plus if you are making money off of it, then double shut up because you are making money off of it!
2. You get rid of the crap that you don't like on Ebay or something and only advertise yourself as a trance dj. Be true to your genre if you select only one. I'm not saying that you can't spin more than one genre and like it, but then again, if you did, then you wouldn't be complaining on this thread would you?
I personally only spin trance. It's not because I don't like other genres, it's because that is what I love the most--by far. I only advertise myself as a trance dj, and if I get a gig, then there is absolutely no confusion to what I am going to spin. You also have to know what jobs to take as a dj too! Obviously if you go to a club, or spin in front of ONLY kids who haven't had the opportunity to get to like trance etc, then of course you aren't going to be popular. Realise that and suck it up that you have to turn a gig down even though you really want to spin live. The posts here have proven the point that it sucks to spin in front of people that don't appreciate the music you spin.
I've read plenty of threads on big bands or djs selling out etc. It's only selling out if you do it for reasons other than why you became a DJ in the first place. If that reason is money, then sure, you really can't sell out to yourself, but if that reason is to spin trance, and you get mad about it, realize that trance is the reason you became a dj in the first place.

Shit happend to me too....NEVER EVER DO FRAT PARTIES!!! Even when people say yeah we like "techno" they're talking about fucking sandstorm and castles in the sky. Don't ever do Frat parties trust me, all you get is people bitching for hip-hop.
I hate it when my roommates and I have a party b/c obviously we wanna hear trance, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut no one else does, we play a mix disc,(none of us have decks yet
) and not 4 tracks into it, some drunk bitch goes, "we hate techno, do you guys have rap?"
Uggggggh I fuckin hate that shit, if you try to argue they get all in your face with the whole "no one listens to techno" shit.
The one experience that I have where I was actually at a party where a DJ was spinning live, (not at the club where everyone wants to hear trance b/c thats what everyone came to hear) my friend was spinning at a house party. Apparently the guys having the party had let everyone know prior to the party that trance was gonna be spun there, b/c no one actually asked for hip hop/rap! Instead they just stayed outside!!!! So there were like probably 6 of us in the basement listenin to my friend drop track after track of trance! It was great, and he had fun b/c no one was hasslin him to spin what he didnt want to spin.

This is what it's all about.
You know I actually spoke to Ferry about this same thing. Yes that Ferry. He understood that Hip Hop is the main stream sound here in the U.S.A. He said that his Trance music is all about people who work all week and want to let loose at a party on the weekend. He said that when he spins Trance he wants people to feel inspired, energized, and all that good stuff. He said it's not about going to a party and acting cool and "..everyone saw me and I saw everyone.." or in other words bling blingin' (that's not exactly how he put it but something like that). He said anyone that goes to see him spin at a club will walk out like "wow that was great fun". That is his goal.
My suggestion is this, anyone you know that doesn't feel Trance take them to see Ferry or Armin or Tiesto or PVD and they will feel that energy we feel. Then they are hooked and will be posting the next thread!!

P.S. You know what is funny is that Old Skool hip hop i.e. Afrika Bambatta had a lot of electronica elements (kraftwerk samples, etc.)
It used to be fun, new, innovative, synths, breakbeats, what the hell happened??
I guess you just gotta go into parties knowing what people are going to want...if they want hip-hop and you don't like spinning it then you shouldn't spin.
Do what jdat was saying...throw on some really good underground hip-hop tracks and that will make people happy. I guess your ultimate goal as a DJ is to make the crowd happy. If you have ever seen a good underground hip-hop DJ you'll know what I'm talking about. I saw one at a club once and I was actually enjoying the music.

I know how you feel man. I played a house party a few weeks ago, my first time in front of a crowd. So I stood in front of my decks and shoved the bitch off, luckily I had a few cool people I didn't know backing me, but my table still got shoved around a bit. I would've spun after that, but I wanted to knock that fucks teeth down his throat so bad I figured I should leave...
But we actually made a cool video of me spinning, and some girl asked if I spun in clubs or had a cd, because I'm "better than most of the djs that play around here." That brightened my night a little.

So far I've been mixing on either rather little partys (in Germany / Netherlands) and as resident DJ on 2 real radio stations.
Therefore I did my job on birthday partys but I got fed up with it. Either people stopped dancing during UK/Dutch Trance [PvD Style], came up to the both and asked whether I can play hiphop (*puke*) or some commercial trance (like: sylver, lasgo...).
Many people still see Germany as "the golden state of trance" or whatever (starf0x for e.g. ). But it aint true.
Just go ask some people about who is Paul Van Dyk. Only 2-4 out of 10 might know his music (or at least the name).
In fact the Trance Scene in Germany is pretty fucked too. Every wannabe-DJ/Producer is out for the money here and covers 80s hits (there've been more than 40 (!!) cover versions within the last 2 years). I just hope things change here soon :P

After hearing about you DJ�s in America wanting to play trance, but the crowd wanted you to play hip-hop. Well, a couple of years ago Armand Van Helden was playing at Space in Ibiza, and he played 3 hip-hop records in a row, and the crowd booed him off, I believe.

Plus Gerry, what do you expect from frat parties? Especially here @ State? Lets see what goes on here @ SDSU frats on the weekends..

I don't think you can really blame hip hop for what happened. I think it's just the environment you were in, and the type of music you played. I'm surprised you even took your trance records with you, with all that goes on at those "awesome" parties.
Yeah, if there's one thing I learn here @ State, I learned to stay away from those fucking frats. Nothing but trouble and drama...along with drunk white chicks making themselves look nothing better than cardboard boxes.
I aint gonna stay away. I like the hot drunk white chicks!
