-- too young for hard trance?

I suggest that you promote yourself at school by telling your fellow students that there is going to be an exciting full trance set and this is the "future of music" or something like that. Make sure to get the word out to as many students as you can. Then if you have lots of friends, use them by having them go to the party, and have them go CRAZY right when you drop your first trance tune. Make sure that you are having FUN too so others will see this entire phenomenon and say "this techno kind of music is cool!" Do not play too long because they might lose interest, but if they are still into it, then play as long as you have to. Or just have them wanting more!
I would suggest that you make a cd mix and hand it out around school. Give it away for free so that the kids can at least know what to expect. At a dance with 8th graders in it, you will need to spin tracks that they are familiar with. One of the last posts said that for every good club track there is usually a good trance remix. This is true
I've got a rave demo and a club demo which are totally different. I still spin good trance in both of them, but for my club demo, I spin more familar stuff like pet shop boys, madanna, inxs, etc. Use mainly those types of tracks than then throw in other trance tracks that go along well with the others. Give them something to ease them into the genre so that they won't even notice by the end of the night that they are listening to trance vs club.
My personal suggestion is that you use tracks with lyrics in it. I've found that most people who listen to my sets that haven't been exposed to trance before, find it really akward to listen to music that doens't have lyrics in it.

| Originally posted by Acid John i think yall know that im in 8th grade...and i spin hard trance. im also on tha middle school student council...and they say that it would be ok if i mix at one of the school partys. (the party would be for 6th-8th grades) but even in that other post...somethin like "worst dj night ever", even college students didnt like trance...and were all beggin for hip-hop. so im thinkin from droppin the opprotunity b-cuz the rest of the school will probably just boo me off cuz they dont like techno(the laymen term for any electronic music) the only other idea i got is to split the night of the party up between me and atleast one of the other hip-hop djs in the school. so i would get somethin like an hour to spin, and my friend would take up another hour. |
Dude...play what you want. Thats all I have to say. It's your 'gig' and if you want to spin hard trance, go ahead. Fuck the kids if they don't like it. They'll listen to it anyways. Who cares if they don't like it and want rap.
JUST FUCK THE REST, UR THE BEST!
Don't give a shit about what they want! They asked you to spin at that party, you will spin what you know, either it is hard trance or somethint else. Make sure you have a great time and have a nice experience. But as many people said, have some commercial cheese in the beggining of the set. Many persons will recognize it and start dancing, and later proceed with your hardtrance. Once they are hot with those "cheeses", i doubt if they'll stop dancing! Another person mentioned of making a mixed cd and spreading it out around the school. That's a good idea but needs a good budget!
Also, try to spin at some birthday parties or other kind of parties so that you get the reputation. Oh yeah, that's what it's all about. Reputation. Make sure you get loads of it and then everyone will ask around where to find you! And those posters or flyers, it's a good idea. Let everyone know that you'll spin hardtrance or whatever. So if someone gets to the party and gets dissapointed, tell him "you knew it, why you came?".
Just keep in mind...
YOU MAKE THE SET! LET EVERYONE FUCK OFF IF THEY DON'T LIKE IT!

I just hope the people running the school don't kick you out for not playing what the kids wanted, What if one of the kids complain to one of the people running the school cause your refusing to play stuff they know, You could get in a lot of trouble for that, But anyways, I agree with you on that, You should play whatever the hell you want, We dont need no snot nose kid telling you what to do and play what he want to hear, I hate hiphop as much as the next person due to its lyrics always talking about capping people, Having sex and stuff thats always negative, Thats all hiphop seems to be about these days, About the negatives and they never focus on the positives.

i dont agree with that. Unless you are fatboy slim or carl cox, you should have desency to play what the people want. remember that they are there to hear what they want, not want you want. If you wanna play hard trance and no one else does, just save it for the bedroom k?
i really dont think its a good idea to play for schools or general type of events if you refuse to play what people want.
remember, you cant do want you want until you are Sasha status or Oakenfold status
