mwaaah...maybe...the thing is, that the ppl who are out just for the sake of getting drunk never pays attention to the mixing - only the tracks played (and not even that sometimes)...I'm on the other side, is often drunk as well when going out with friends - BUT, I do notice the transitions (if you wouldn't, then what kind of DJ are you?!!)...and when a DJ mixes like my grandma' - well ...if he isn't playing my all time favorite tracks, then my night is ruined...(if a good looking babe doesn't come to my rescue)

well, i'd hardly say i'm pro or anything, but one thing i like to do is scratch the beat back and forth while the crossfader is in the middle.

Here's an example, i didn't do it perfect this time, and had to correct it, but i think you will get the gist.

LINK

also, i like playing with the panning on tracks, that can be fun too, specially cuz my mixer has pans on each channel.

Alot of the easier, and more noticable tricks are done with the channel and cross faders. Sure, if you know how to scratch and juggle, it's all good, but it's kinda hard to do it with songs that have rarely any notciable or sample-able samples(i.e trance)
One of my favs to do is fool around with the EQs and channel faders...because the channel faders have a more direct effect on the output of the track, cutting it in and out is easier to do, not to mention that it's positioned up and down, so your natural flicking motion of the wrist will be an aid to quick cutting. Try this: every beat, close the channel and immediatly open up(cut), with the fader opening at 100% when the beat hits. Simple, overused, but with the right effects in place(i.e a 4/4 flanger during a buildup) it sounds pretty cool. Or all this, then a backspin before a new measure is introduced.
The important thing to keep in mind is exactly what your title says: you gotta be creative. Think of new ways to alter your music, to change direction. Use what you have, cuz that's all you got!

amongst all these tricks and tips one thing you should never forget :
don't over do them!

some djs just over kill doing the same knob tricks and what not when pure and straight forward mixing could sometimes be more appreciatable ( spelling )

let the set flow and now when to work hard at it or not otherwise it gets repitious real quickly....

I notice this even more now that I quit dj ing and that I vj .... I just hate it when I hear the dj doing the same trick over and over and over ... gets boring real quickly.

Where did I say its OK for the DJ to be as bad as your gran?? I didnt, oviously you need to have the basic skill of mixing down. All I said it forget about the tricks and creativity untill you have full developed your style, selection and learning how to read a crowd. Because this first and fore most is the most important part of being a club DJ. Anyone who says differently doesnt know what their talking about.

hey let's not get all mad here

surely enough you can understand that everyone has their own way of seeing things

Reading the crowd for example is something you never totally master ....

3 deck mixing!! that will certainly lighten up things. try mixing in breaks and other stuff, try it all and then u will certainly find ure style. good luck.

Posted by Tony Morello on Dec-28-2002 00:55:

that's exactly what i was thinking about doing
finding some nice dirty breaks to play during the breakdowns when there isn't a beat going
but i should get a 3rd deck to do this properly
