MP3 players are designed to play MP3-encoded audio files. Ogg Vorbis-encoded files are not MP3, and hence will not play in MP3 players. However, if your MP3 player has the capacity to play other formats (with the aid of a firmware upgrade, or whatever), then it may be possible to play Vorbis-encoded files once the manufacturer releases an update. It depends on your player.

I don't fully understand your question, but you can burn .OGG files to CD audio with no problems.. if that's what you mean.

What happend to mp3pro??

This format had a smaller size then the original mp3, and with
a better quality..

mp3pro is a technology that allows encoded audio data to hold information about higher frequencies, which are normally lost at low (< 64kbps) bitrates.

The problem with it is that while it has a better quality, it is still subject to the same licensing and horrible parents that mp3 is (as it is developed by Thomson). So fair enough, at least it's improved quality, but it's not open source. And we like open source. Yes we do.

I am not sure about the quality of mp3pro compared to ogg vorbis, but I would say that in general, open source developers always seem to go one step further than large corporations do in this field.. I mean, Thomson are making money from mp3/mp3pro, but the OGG project doesn't... The OGG developers are writing software and compression algorithms that they will use themselves, so you can pretty much guarantee that they will be done to the best of the developer's abilities. At least we hope so.

Yep Winamp is supporting these plugins.
But ogg will be the same like mp3pro - all players support mp3, dvd systems support mp3 etc; ogg is not the best alternative - sounds much worse @ a good audio equipment...

Are you trying to tell me that an OGG Vorbis encoded file sounds worse than an mp3 file of equivalent bitrate on a quality hifi or studio equipment? I can't even begin to say how wrong that is. It has been proved to be a superior format, so I am sure that your bad experience must have been due to some external hitch, like bad encoder settings, or similar.

Still, I don't like being vicious, so what's the best alternative in your opinion if it's not Vorbis then?

Its alot more crisp, but it removes some of the NICE dirtiness in a song.

I like both mp3 and ogg. they should both be used.

128 kbps MP3 -> Uncompressed WAV -> 128 kbps OGG

???

will that be better than

128 kbps MP3 -> 128 kbps OGG

Or will it yield the same results? Have you tried this before?? Thanks for any answers.

AFAIK, all existing conversion applications convert to an uncompressed wave format as a temporary intermediate, before encoding to OGG Vorbis again. So no difference.

Through my own personal experience I can personally say that MP3PRO is total crap compared to ogg.

Exactly... it has been proven through numerous field tests (One was for a german technology mag and they tested about 6000 random people...) that ogg comes out on top as far as sound quality goes at a certain bitrate.

ogg vorbis is a great file format with a really stupid name lol
