If one wish to learn a certain style then Ithink it would be better for that student to take his training to the next level and journey to a place where he/she can learn it.

If you wish to acquire a new level in your discipline and "DO", direct yourself to a journey where u can learn it.

I understand that purchasing books and videos cannot never be a substitute for actual training in the dojo. However, it would be nice to have some sort of collection as an archive, either as a hobby or a reference to enhance training.

buddy? U wanna take Kung fu at the age of 23?????? You got a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way to go. Kung Fu is best learned at an Early age. At your present age it would take u at least 20 years to get smoothe. Karate May not be your style but it is One of which will get u in shape the fastest. That is if you can take the pain .

As stated b4 u gott wathc out for bogus black belts/masters. Especially with JKD.

Yes I would take Kung Fu at the age of 23.Age has nothing to do with your ability to learn things. That pish posh with learning things at a young age is highly stereo typical.Besides,we are always learning things until the day we die,so it makes no difference.I don't recall martial arts being about pain, but rather about understanding and experience which is what the concept of martial arts about.

I don't see anything wrong with learning kungfu at that age. My sifu is in his early 40's, and one day I asked him "will any of us ever learn everything that you know?" and to that he replied "I'd have to stop learning first."

Gung Fu in the literal sense, means strength and diligent effort. If you work hard enough, you can achieve your goal. Unfortunately, my friend and I had a discussion about the degradation of martial arts, and that in today's world, as long as you pay your exam fees, they'll eventually have to pass you. :P But then you'd only be cheating yourself.

However, wushu is a different story, since its not really a "martial" art in the fullest sense, even though "Wu-Shu" does mean martial art. :P Its more like gymnastics and acrobatics taht resembles a martial art, and we all know gymnasts peak at a certain age and can't perform any more.

And as to the age old question of which style is the best, there is none. It all comes down to the individual learning it, and the master teaching it. Why do you want to learn? What do you expect to gain from years of practice? I can tell you that after 6 and a half years, my view and respect of martial arts training has changed, and my ego has shed, and that itself is reward enough.

quddha you are not training anymore after 6 and a half years, taking a break, looking for new challenge?

throughout highschool, i trained 3 days every week, plus demos on the weekend, and even more in the summer. But now that I've gotten to university, its been tough to find time.

However, this semester is lighter, so I plan on training again at least once a week. In fact I went back last monday, but they moved location, and I didn't know about it, hah, so when I got there it was some t-shirt printing place with all this metallica memerobillia. So I called my sifu and he had to come pick me up. :P

We'll be doing demos and lion dances all over the city this chinese new years, maybe you'll see us. (chung wah, red and white jackets with black pants like in the above photo)

No, but seriously, as soon as I find one I'm interested in, I'm signing up this time. I'm turning into a lazy bastard.

I know a guy who's going to be getting his instructor's course from Straight Blast Gym and Matt Thornton, a jeet kune do variant that produced UFC champion Randy Couture.

I took a few lessons from him and I was never so sore in my life.

He's probably going to open a gym in Toronto in fall.

I'd actually be really interested in Kendo i've been looking for a good school that's not too out of the way, and the one I found was http://www.toronto-kendo-club.ca/ .. If only my schedule was in tune with the training times.

I started in 93. Haven't been to a dojo since I've been here however. I miss an occasional oni kudake.....

I still have numerous books, paraphernalia, and videos from my training days. I know you mentioned you'd use it to augment any actual teachings from a master, but I think giving them to you would be dangerous, because attempting to replicate something that takes years to learn is a recipe for disaster. Also, you won't be able to appreciate the intricacies of a technique until you've actually tried it (or had it tried upon you).

If you want to learn any historical info about the art, or some kickass stories, I'd be glad to give you those talks.
