KarateKid

Guvernment/Koolhaus in Toronto charges $10 cover on regular nights and they always fill up ..

Viva charges $20 and they fill up too ..

i'm sure u guys could do the same esp. with Vancouver having one of the fastest growing populations in Canada. the large crowds we get are due in part to immigrants. People coming over from Europe and Asia like coming out to these parties so u always get a mixed crowd..

and what?? you guys don't have clubs that open after 2am .. ?? is that a bylaw ?!? wtf..

Posted by 24K on Feb-08-2003 02:18:

I also agree that the hope of seeing healiners on a regular basis relies on Vancouver getting a legal after hours. And about the 4am by-law... don't hold your breath. I was reading a post by Scott Audio and he said that it won't even be considered going into effect until the summer,,, AND... then it will only be considered on a one off basis type application for clubs with super clean records... What a fuckin joke.

About getting headliners at our night @ Viva,,, believe me we're trying,,, unfortunately with our current financial situation it just isn't feasable. If we got the entire door sales,,, then it would be a diffrent story.

And back to the idea of an Apex stage this year... I think there's an excellent chance of this happening. Nice to see that so many people are interested... as soon as I find out all the official details I'll make a post in this section.

peace.

if it wasnt for these forums, i wouldve never known of any trance night in van. i only hear of raves outside of this place.
its all about educating the public

great idea on the apex stage danny
i'd be more than happy to help in any way

Sorry, I read up to this post, I'll read the others after.

Great ideas 24K.

And yes, myself, I know squat about the scene in Vancouver without places like here with the forums. It's all about knowing which sites to pick apart and who you know just to find out about venues. There is no commerical promotion at all. Nothing. There's no radio stations or tv stations to promote events around here, the closest thing is like 94.5 promoting hiphop nights around town.

Since summer 2002, I've been slowly building a website with the intention to report news and local and global events. There's way too many global events for me alone to cover, so I've been concentrating more on local events. Yeah, most of my news right now is mainstream, but I place higher priority on any Canadian news I get. ie, lately most of my artist reviews have been canadian artists, or if I have say 5 news items, I post anything related to Canada on top. My spin is to try and promote Canadian artists, its tough on them because there isn't a huge fanbase for trance music in Canada, and to compete against Europe to try and sell records, its tougher. I guess its a touch of Nationalism to promote Canadians first.

Anyways, yes, we need more clubs, more events, longer hours, etc. I have school right now, I don't have time to work, so something like $50 for a 2 hour set, that's out of my price range, I don't have that kind of cash to spare, I need that for books and gas money.

If anything happens 24K, let me know. I want to help in any way, from volunteering to help set up and run the show (I'm willing to learn anything to help man) to just a simple promotion, I'm there dude.

PM me or email me [email protected] for personal or if its promotional [email protected]

Now back to reading posts, perhaps I'll have more to add.

I lack fundage to pick up tables and all the equipment. School eats up cash and time. I'm willin to learn heh. For now, all I got are computer mixes, but those aren't as good as I could make them if I had the time to apply. I'm improvin with live mixing a lot, if you listened to my first mix release compared to my 4th.

Hi guys - just moved down here from Squamish.
So not all that familiar with the politics surrounding the scene.
I've been to the The World/Sonar/Shine/Odyssey and
LoveAffair.

So what've I heard thus far? House, House, and more House.
And no offense to all the House lovers out there - but most of the House i've heard in Van is absolutely tasteless. Same mundane boring melody and beat over and over. Don't feel even remotely compelled to get up an dance. I guess that's what the drugs are for eh? I've only ever heard Dicky Doo bust out a few nice tracks in the over 3 years i've been clubbing down in Vancouver. So where's all the damn Trance? House doesn't have shit on Trance. Why is House so dominant? I realize that House is easier to dance to then Trance, but is that possibly the only reason it's crowding the club scene or am I missing something?

Can a Trance Dj not break into the scene at a club like
Sonar or The World? Or are those venues specifically looking for House DJ's?

It's all about the track selection. If you got the flow and your mixing is on, why could you not break into the scene and get shit happening? People love Trance - i've seen Tiesto live at the Commodore 3 years in a row, and every year he kept getting bigger and bigger. People were waiting out in the streets for tickets at his 2002 performance as opposed to 2000 when his show wasn't even sold out.

Trance is still alive...
I think we just need to raise awareness. Get some solid Trance Dj's spinning QUALITY TRANCE on regular nights. Try to branch out as much as possible.

I'm definitely gonna be checking out Club 23 on Wednesday's and offering any support I can. Wouldn't have even known about it if it wasn't for this forum.
'cause i'm sick 'n tired of hearing the same fucking lame ass House trax over and over.

Promotion is the problem

Its true in regards to promoting the scene. Asside from the fact I see Club 23/Organix posters plastered everywhere on Granville Street, there is never anything done to promote new nights at Club 23. There were a few nights that came and went, a Hard Trance, Acid Trance night, a Regular Trance night, a DnB/Jungle night, and a few more, all ended as a result of lack of crowd. I was at the Acid Trance night, and there were 8 people. Thats just said.

I also inadvertantly found out about PVD through a friend, and I had no idea where to pick up the flyer. Actually I walked away from PVD with a flyer, but heck, already saw him that night. What good is it.

The other reason the scene doesn't seem to be there is due to the fact that the majority of people drink, and thats where the money is. I'm not saying that Trance addicts alike don't drink, but the money is with the bar stars and drunkards, and they seem to like house, pop and hip hop.

I'm going to the beach now.

there's always lots of flyers at futuristic flavors on granville...

There were full page PVD ads plastered in the Georgia Strait =P

Danny and I really need to get a flyer done for our night and start promoting to a different crowd, we're just broke as a joke unfortunately for the time being. The fact that our night does well with extremely little promotion is very fortunate for us, hahaha. I would like to diversify the crowd a little and get people in there earlier though, the opening set is pretty much a right off as no more than 40 people are ever in there until after 11. I wish the management would give free cover, drink specials, or something to people that came early, hehe.

Posted by apri_peel on Jun-05-2003 06:14:

sean, i dont think the management really cares about promotion. viva gets packed around midnight, despite the crazy ass $15 cover. ppl will be coming to viva on fridays no matter what.

its true tho, there is a lack of promotion in the city. the parties that do get promoted are usually thrown by ppl who care about nothing but money (i.e., twisted and gold club). those who know nothing about the scene however, never really get exposed to it. i think we are extremely fortunate to have velocity on xfm because that gets the music out to lay people. not many young kids who listen to rock/hip hop hear about trance, and velocity is just perfect for that. i wish they would talk about parties happening in the city other than the usual tiesto parties.

sean, maybe you and danny can hook up with arpy and ray and do a joint party. that way you all can pitch in a little to have enough for something more noticible.
