hmmm i think this genre labelling will always be disputable..
but yea i'd still label ferry and armin and tiesto as trance. just different type of trance
its hard to put someone in a distinct genre
if u literise 'trance' as oakenfold dreamy trance
then u can also say that the original trance of goa.. is the TRUE trance..
but thats not the case as we know it..
differnt perceptions exist....

I prefer the other group: Armin, Tiesto, and Ferry.

Does anyone agree with this distinction?

I agree 110%
except about Oakenfold...Oakenfold does fast and slow, but Digweed and Sasha are too slow and that is a turnoff.

My favorite DJ's include paul van dyk and tiesto....

in reply to do you guys like digweed: NO!

Exactly right. And doesn't goa pre-date trance?
In fact in the early days the term "trance" reflected very well this transcendental slow music.

Think back to Oakenfold's 1998 Tranceport, that was 3 years ago, and "trance" is a very good way to describe that album.

But then the Anthem Revolution of 1999/2000 changed the genre completely, the music got a harder edge and became more danceable. Yet the term stuck on.

I call this "The Paradox of Trance"

Thumbs up

In my opinion, John Digweed is one of the top 3 Trance DJ's in the world. His musical selections are contantly fresh and uplifting. His mixing flows flawlessly.

Posted by JdDark on May-25-2001 00:28:

i like digweed, especially his work together with sasha

Posted by dvd on May-25-2001 06:15:

funny how this bandwagoner guy from church knows him and has like a cd but i dont =\ hehe.. i never heard anything from him

Posted by day_for_night on May-25-2001 06:21:

well, where to start???

first off, please don't mention Jokenfold in the same sentence as sasha and digweed. He does not even come CLOSE to comparing to either of them. i don't want to start an oakenfold love/hate war, but if you think he is anywhere near as talented as s&d then it simply highlights you complete lack of knowledge when it comes to a dj's skill level. (i won't even comment on tiesto, ferry corsten,ect..)

second, yes digweed is fantastic! the man is a genius. his hong kong and la gu's are some of my favorite cds. his mixing is second only to that of sasha's (which he has said many times himself), and his style is always years ahead of the field. while some may not like his cd's cause they are "too slow", i find they take you on a ride no tiesto cd ever will.

sasha plays deep progressive trance people! when he and digweed get together it's a different story. but when he plays on his own, his sets are very trancy...just not CHEESE. (i won't mention examples of cheese). his track selection is the best of any dj, and his mixing is UNREAL.

/end rant

Posted by Paul_Van_Trance on May-25-2001 06:34:

let one thing be clear:
many, actually MOST of the people on this forum are uplifting/epic trance lovers.. fast, energetic type (AvB, Ferry Corsten..)
So they will find stuff by Diggers, Sasha, Darren Emerson, Dave Seaman and Nick Warren pretty "slow" as many called it so far.

Its just a different style.. these guys play mostly Progressive and Tribal/Tech House.
If you are not into this style, then there is no way ever that u will get to like stuff by these artists.

However, if u DO like it, just like I do, then you will find that out of them all, Digweed tends to bring u a fresh selection, of great quality, and amazing mixing skills.
He has been the best at it for the last 2 years along with Sasha, but recently Dave Seaman has been givin them a headache.. he's rising too high nowadays.

Personally I find Trance boring. Too repetitive. Prog Trance is much better and yet, my personal taste, Tribal/Tech House is the best, which is the style preferred by Sasha and Diggers.

just my thoughts on this.. don't diss these guys unless u like their music. coz otherwise like stated before u will find it "slow" or "boring" blah blah

laterz..

too slow...hrm

well he might seem "too slow" but digweed is mainly a club dj. what do you hear at clubs, wait let's make that "adult" clubs? you hear progressive house/trance. That is digweed's style, I never hear about him spinning at a "party". He might, but the style of party also depends.

He has skill, he has selection, but unless i'm in the club he's spinning at leave me at home listening to some avb, tiesto, corsten, etc.

Music is very odd at times, tiesto can get me energetic or put me to sleep, depends on how loud it is. And when i normally listen to tiesto I get energetic either way, but with digweed I always seem to listen late at night when I can't turn it up so...it gets draggy and kinda monotone. so i fall asleep...end of story

Posted by trintiy on May-25-2001 11:08:

To end all the debate here, and put it simply Dj's like Sasha, Digweed, and Tenaglia are a Dj's Dj's. Do ya know what I mean, you either have to be a Dj or a really advanced music lover/clubber to understand and appreciate what their doing behind the decks. They take you on the most incredible journeys without droping anthemns every other track. Not to mention most of the tracks they play are their own remixes made specially for them. Thats why when you hear them live tracks sound famliar but you can never find that exact mix when you shop around for it.

These guys never bend their style to suite a particular crowd, they bring the crowd to them, and thats the true magic behind being a Dj, and theres no one better than Sasha and Digweed at doing this, they blend progressive house and progressive trance together with seamless perfection.

And as someone stated earlier please don't ever mention Oakie in the same thread as Sasha and digweed, or even Tiesto and AVB for that matter. Oakie decent remxier, crap Dj!!

Posted by patticus on May-25-2001 11:53:

that's a very interesting point eugene, i still consider those "dance" djs you call it to be trance.
just the dutch trance sound, which is more commercial = easily promotable and very catchy.
armin, tiesto, ferry, etc.

anyways i'll leave it at, i like digweed, he's incredibly skilled and can throw down some excellent stuff.

If more DJs did this, the club would be a happier place, well, atleast I would be

but Digweed and Sasha are too slow and that is a turnoff.

try and download some of their live stuff, much faster pace than their production CDs - i have a couple of 'faster paced' sets if you're ever interested

First of all Digweed doesn't play trance (live). 2nd of all S&D only play together at Twilo...no where else. U can't compare their cds to live. The GU's are made w/pro tools.

Digweed is the best mixer in the industry. GU 19 is brilliant, I think its 1 of best compliations of the year. Digweed is a great DJ but his track selection is too slow for me & sometimes boring & montonous. I can't dance to 122 bmp but his set @ Massive is awesome! Hard...fast but he doesn't play like that at Twilo.
a Digweed set is like a 7 layer cake. He layers & builds...its like foreplay. Then around 6 am he starts dropping bombs...
Every month he delivers a fresh set...w/up front tunes. He constantly pushes the envelope. Digweed is very popular in NYC...everyone is riding the prog house bandwagon.

that's an excellent description of his live stylez twilog. digweed is awesome, his work never ceases to amaze me either. constant quality after quality.

if ya ask me
digweed, tenaglia, sasha, cox, etc developed what currently is the progressive scene.. without them i don't htink the scene would be as developed as it is now
they used to break barriers with music..

Posted by Twilogoddess on May-26-2001 21:59:

I don't think Carl Cox is progressive at all. His sets are banging from the first record to the last. He doesn't really build or layer like Digweed, Howells, or Tenaglia.

Digweed=Bigbore

Posted by trintiy on May-27-2001 00:34:

Twilogoddess

Twilo is not the only place Sasha and Digweed play together. In the UK they play together loads especially for big events...

Posted by Twilogoddess on May-27-2001 04:05:

Right Homelands. I meant residency together.
