hmm now i have no fond place in my heart for the Illini, but you saying that brings a certain movie quote about Scotland to my mind...

Tommy: Doesn't it make you proud to be Scottish?
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: ....

i wont continue, and you prolly know the rest. |

no flaming please, its not worth it, especially over u2...

Joshua Tree was an amazing album, and their older stuff is great, granted. But nowadays they bora tha fuck outta me,and Bono is one of the most bloated ppl I've ever seen in my life.Add the fact they want to be oh-so-politically correct while demanding ridiculuously high fees for one gig,and I'm starting to get fed up.And comparing them to trance or any other electronic genre is just stupid,as the music trance producers or whatever make has nothing to do with what U2 are doing(apart from Discotheque and some more tunes on Pop maybe)

Posted by LKD on Mar-19-2003 18:57:

in my opinion, U2 is one of the few bands that actually updates their music style, yet holding onto their vast creativity.

my U2 favs list:
With or Without You
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Stuck in a Moment
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Discotheque
Staring at the sun
Mysterious Ways

they are alright..staring at the sun and with or without you are great..but the song where u too is sitting in a carriage in the video fuck i have never been sooooo annoyed by a song ever.

what a great thread!! I love U2, and saw them in Chicago last year, was the best concert ive ever seen There remixes are great too

Vive la revolution

i like how u2 experiment and do crrazy stuff, that demands respect. as far as discotheque being described as cheezy.. meh. i look at it as the band having a laugh, and it's really quite a cool song some truly wicked production. the concert experience of a u2 show is very rave-like.. especially when streets happens. it's a communal thing. in that way i would compare it to trance. i got a kick of tiesto saying one song he wanted to remix was where the streets have no name. U2 plays and has played a much greater part in my life than trance music, but that's just me,and on a trance forum i wouldn't expect it to be the norm. I worry though about them, especially after the last album. Hopefully we will see some innovation from them again.

Posted by LKD on Mar-20-2003 01:46:

i dunno if any of u heard but when they had their Pop tour, the lighting was so bright that people in surrounding areas called up the police reporting alien landings

oh and the best part about U2, is that they hate miming on Stage and everything is live

While i luv u2, how can a band be better than any other type of music? That's like saying San Francisco is better than any country.

what about that whole 'Pop' tour? not only was it rediculously tied into to shitty products, but even u2 fans didnt go to it! it was completely unsuccessful...at least we know that bono is curing poverty and hunger!

firstly, bono isn't curing poverty and hunger and doesn't think or say he is, he's using his position of influence to try and change the world for the better. I commend that. Lot's of people don't. To each his own.

And about the pop tour, it wasn't tied into any shitty products... U2 has never had corporate sponsorship (well, besides mtv) for any tour. the Pop tour was making fun of corporatism and pop culture and brands.. but as we can see it was lost on a lot of people. And it was rather unsuccessful in the US at the beginning.. the band screwed themselves over by booking a tour before their album was finished and in so doing had to rush to finish the album and then had time to rehearse. In Europe, the tour was really quite successful.. at one show in Italy there were over 150,000 attendees. There are some spectacular moments on that tour, it just started out a little rough.

Posted by Ray_Finkle on Mar-20-2003 22:26:

Yeah like he said. The band has never recieved corporate sponsership. Take a look at the ZooTV tour. They risked themselves financially and staged a huge, spectacular show and took a massive hit. They could have just played in arenas with nothing but a few spot lights and it would have made them more money. The reason they didn't do this was because they wanted the fans to have a great time. They succeeded. Same with the Pop Tour. They truely care about their fans. For anyone who hasn't read U2 - At the End of the World by Bill Flanagan, READ IT NOW!!! It is such a good book about U2.

Posted by biznology on Mar-20-2003 22:48:

well as for the 'lack' of tie ins, i think getting pimped by MTV is about as bad as commercialism can get. and if the 'Pop' thing was lost on US viewers that was prolly the reason|

U2 = Most over rated band on the planet.

He opened for their Zooropa tour in 1993 and has remixed several of their songs.
