Saving as a jpeg really makes it less clear ... but paint has no compresion options. So I hope everyone can read it.

ok ... here is my secret method ... it's not all that hard but it takes a lot of time to do in paint ...

Step1: First I make a random pattern of colours and lines about 100 pixels wide. The width here determines how far back the background appears ... of couse pixel sizes change depending on the monitor and the screen resolution so it's not 100%

Step2: I copy the the pattern so its repeated beside itself on the right. If you look at this the right way it should look like a flat 3D surface.

Step3: Now make a selection on the right pattern and move the selection to the left. The selected part will now look like it's floating above the background. The farther it is to the left the closer it will appear, but don't move it so far that it goes over the first pattern.

Step4: Fill in the space left behind from the selection ... repeat 2,3 and 4 to make the image wider
