If an opinionated woman speaks her mind, she's called a bitch... interesting. Listen, I just tell it like it is.

one man cannot commercialize an entire genre...

and as for being an "opinionated woman"... fine im glad you have an opinion and voice it... but in every thread ive seen you post in, your flaming someone for voicing their's... or totally bashing something... do you ever have something positive to say about ANYTHING?

Ha ha, yeah they do. So I just say that I listen to techno and they're like "o yeah" or I say club music sometimes.

Trance and America is a good thing. People who get pissed off about something becoming mainstream are just selfish. Relax, it's supposed to be about the music...not who heard something or bought something first. It's only a matter of time before electronica becomes mainstream...

I totally agree with everything LiquidX has said. Its great to have someone like that around for me cause i dont have to spend all that time trying to explain my views...

just one question to twilogoddess: Do you think that trance music bcoming mainstram is a bad thing? peronally i dont.

The only person I bash is Oakie. I'm entitled to my own opinion. Life would be very boring if everyone agreed.

Oakenfold WAS an innovator and a pioneer who's accomplishments have paved the way for many other DJ's.His sets lately though leave a lot to be desired. Oakenfold is very arrogant...no other DJ would proclaim themselves as the greatest DJ in the world (in Muzik Magazine, fall '99). You would never hear Michael Jordan saying that he's the greatest basketball player that ever lived. Oakenfold knows what he's worth and I feel that his outlook on life is just dollar signs in front of his face instead of being all about the music. He's always looking out for #1....trying to endorse his name and milk everything to the last drop. He doesn't look out for his fans and as a result he's losing them. One of the reason's I love PVD so much is because he's ALL about the MUSIC.

I give Oakey credit but I have no respect for him. I really feel Oakey is not in it for the music and djing now, but rather for the fame and fortune... which is really sad. There are a number of reasons I say this:

1--Oakey plays the same set everywhere he goes. He is spinning the same records. As one of the superstar dj's I expect more. A dj with his status receives numerous white labels, and has access to vinyl most people only dream of--SO PLAY IT!! Status and label are no excuse for laziness and lack of creativity. His set-up is such that he can easily move from venue to venue making money.

2--Oakey's "tour of America" is fast-moving, high-priced, and short-lived. I can understand a dj trying to push his music but Oakey has intentionally set up his tour with the same short sets, delivered to a maximum number of people, in as many venues as he can, in order to make money efficiently. He hardly ever spins for more than 2 hours and charges high prices for the same set he spun in a city the day before. There is no excuse for this because these days all the big dj's are traveling, yet find time to change their sets and play for extended hours. I think he feels he is a celebrity giving a concert rather than a dj at a party.

3--I have heard numerous accounts of Oakey's arrogance and disregard for his fans including turning away autographs distancing himself from fans at venues. He is very demanding in terms of money and amenities according to people who have had to deal with booking him for gigs. He has started gigs late and ended early, giving his fans like one encore.

Well.. I know that Oakey never called himself the greatest, maybe the Muzik Mag of 99 CLAIMED him the best DJ .. you know that everymag calls a DJ as the best one for every year, and him playing the same records in other places does not bother me, b/c I will only see him ONCE and would not follow him everywhere he goes, although, if he comes back to the city where he spunn, his gotta obviously spinn some other records.. like at ULTRA he spunn some new and old stuff, and I love the set, for the reason that I never heard those RECORDS live, and he also played records that I been waiting to hear to be played, I wish I woul've heard some older stuff like Xpander, Gouryella or binary finary.. but they are old.. but I dont give, cause I still love those records.. Every DJ does the same thing, you just dont notice b/c you dont hear them spinn everynight, but if you record every single mix they do, you'll see that they'll play the same stuff as well.. just a few change of tunes, but as said.. everyone has its own point and opinion..
GREETZ
:-)

No shit.

The tunes Oakie plays aren't underground either. Ppl are calling them underground cuz they're not the usual anthems he spins.

PVD does spin the same tracks alot also, so does Tiesto and others... No crime, every Dj does it... Oakenfold does throw in new tunes and white labels, at least I know he did at Ultra and on some other sets I have heard..

Posted by toxa on May-31-2001 02:54:

There is nothing wrong with playin the same tracks on ur tour.
Most djs do it as someone already mentioned in this thread.
Nothing wrong with comercializing trance, its already in process, i dont see why u are so against it. I doubt you are gonna have 15 and 16 year olds listening to pvd and oakie, and i think older people will just help the scene. Its not like its so underground that few people know about it. Anyone that goes clubbing from time to time knows the trance scene.

Posted by Twilogoddess on May-31-2001 03:12:

I agree PVD & Tiesto t play the same records. But Oakie plays Tranceport, Another World, & Travelling. If I wanted to hear those albums, I'd save my $40 & stay home. Oakie has been opening w/Lost.Com- Animal Everywhere recently.

The major difference is PVD & Tiesto play +6 hour sets. It's acceptable for them to play classics. Oakie plays the SAME stale 2 hour set of outdated tunes in every city.

He's lazy, the reason he plays the same tunes is cuz he knows that they make the crowd go wild. He's a crowd pleaser. I love Tranceport but its 3 yrs old. When I go & see a World Class DJ I expect to hear upfront fresh tunes, I guess I'm a muzik snob. He needs to grow some ballz & take a risk, play a *new* record that he discovered on his own (not a track everyone is playing)& then see how the crowd reacts. Thats what top DJ's do...they don't just play anthems & classics, thats too easy.

Smoking ..umm..something Setting the Record Straight...

I am going to set the "record" (no pun intended) straight for EVERYONE who is in confusion (see: Twilogoddess). As I am a promoter and run events, and have HAD Oakenfold spin at a club I ran, and as I have MET and spent a night out with Oakenfold, let me say this in his defense:

1) Why does Oakenfold play all the same records? This seems to be the biggest debate here. Well, here's the answer. What most people don't realize, is that Oakie is on tour in the states PROMOTING HIS NEW ALBUM "Another World." When a rock band promotes an album, they play the songs on it in order to turn on fans to it so they go buy it. I know to us "true/hardcore" Oakie fans, this seems like he's "cheating us" out of our money. But its about promotion, and turning NEW people on to it.

2) Oakenfold is cocky and is doing it for the money..... NOT true. I have met him and spent a night with him (when he wasn't spinning), and you would be surprised how down to earth he is. Now, I am not in the press and he has no reason to carry on false pretenses with me, a regular promoter. In the Mixmag article Twilogoddess refers to, the reference is made TO Paul what he thinks about being CALLED the most SUCCESSFUL DJ in the world. Any other statements posted about him claiming to be the best would be unfounded. He has been voted numerous times by various magazines as the best, but he never claimed himself that he was.
As for the money part, I can shed some light on this. When you are a promoter, you want the DJ's that are ACCESSIBLE (i.e. that COME to the USA - NOT just for your club, but on tour (they are cheaper that way). Paul Oakenfold comes the USA enough that it is possible to book him. His management charges (and I'm not supposed to be giving this information out) around $20,000 for a two hour set (plus or minus, depending on time, venue, and date). I want to book him, but my budget only allows for 20G's. So I can only book him for a 2 hour set. This is why you only seem him spin short sets over here.
Another note of interest.... Oakenfold does not charge the $40. I do. I set the prices you pay when you walk in the door. I want to bring Oakenfold to you, but I also want to turn a profit - That is how I make my living. Oakenfold does have a large bank account, so why do you ask does he still charge so much? Because he can. You wouldn't see Britney Spears break down and give a free concert would you? Metallica? Hell no, that's stupid business. If you can charge it, GET IT! It's a rule of business. Paul's managers milk this one all the way to the bone - Paul has little to do with this, trust me.

3) He's Lazy - How many DJ's you know that "work out?" He isn't lazy at all, in fact, if you have ever seen him live, he very much gets into the set. As "mainstream" as many of you may think he is, he always manages to bring the largest crowds, and really keeps them moving (and I mean he is in the booth moving around, even dancing between mixes). And another interesting note, a former complaint that he only plays 2 hour sets - FYI - many of you don't know this, but sometimes he will hit 2 or 3 clubs IN ONE NIGHT to spin sets... As a former DJ, I can assure you its usually easier to Spin a 3-5 hour set in one club than it is to move from club to club all night and spin 2 hour sets. Not THAT lazy....

4) The tunes Oakie plays aren't underground - This is a stupid debate, really. All the songs we hear are underground....until we hear them. Then we say we heard them and they are no longer "underground". What classifies a song as "no longer underground?" You hear it on the radio? Then technically, almost everything you'll hear him and others spin is "underground." The underground debate is really down to each person's personal perspectives and really can't be argued upon.

5) Oakie's set is fast-paced and moves from city to city - this was one of Twilogoddesses' concerns... Well, Paul is (was) on tour for his album. When a band is on tour, usually they will hop from city to city in order to promote this... Keep in mind album sales and fans is about getting EXPOSURE... for many people, just a "taste" is what is needed to get them turned on to Paul... "Hey, that set last night was bangin'... maybe I should go out and get his CD?" - THAT is what the managers and Paul are hoping. They don't want to give the crowd their fill... That's called (and I'm sure you are familiar with this) "Getting Old."

6) I have heard that Oakie is rude to his fans, turning away autographs, ending sets early, starting sets late.... - This one I cannot say anything for in proof, although from what I have seen he is only extremely gracious to his fans. He even let some fans come up with him and dance on the stage and booth area when he was spinning at my event. As far as sets starting late or ending early - sometimes this is the DJ, sometimes it is My fault (like a technical problem or waiting for the previous DJ to finish his set), sometimes it is timing problems with the DJ's management (This accounts for 99% of all DJ errors in set times & arrangements. The managers are the ones you should dislike - they like to cause problems and ruin things for everybody to make an extra quick buck).

7) People getting pissed about something becoming mainstream... - This is a bunch of crap in my opinion. Hey, the more people like it, the more money I will make as a promoter, the more good trance music you will probably hear on the radio (as opposed to all that GARBAGE on the radio now - look at the BBC radio in England...Its so good, they don't even NEED CD's over there!). The more it gets accepted, the more DJ's you will see Record Labels sponsor around the country = more good music. I've had friends in the past who will like a heavy metal band, then when they become mainstream, they dislike them. This is a bunch of horseshit - Don't be so self-righteous and be happy for them.

8)Twilogoddess and her opinions.... - I think Twilogoddess is perfectly entitled to her opinions...hey, this is a BBS for opinions, isn't it? I do agree that too much bashing is kicking a dead horse though. We got the point. It is also not wise to make so many "factual" assumptions and point fingers without indeed knowing all the facts. It gives guys like me a little something to laugh about when reading these posts. Next time, just think of what you are going to look like to others when you say what you say. Maybe it will help you? =-)

Sorry I didn't keep this short, but I think a lot of things needed to be said to clear up a lot. Hopefully we all learned a little? Heheh. Until next time folks.... Keep bangin' the Trance!

PS - It's all good, really. (Is there bad trance????)

Posted by patticus on May-31-2001 14:15:

abtsportsline... well said.

as for bad trance... i would venture to say dj jean, and judge jules' technical skills (for the most part = NOT qontact '01)

Posted by Twilogoddess on May-31-2001 14:53:

U have to charge $40 a ticket b/c u have to pay Oakenfold $20K. $20 G's for 2 hour set is exorbant. He's not an artist, he barely produces. I wouldn't call Bullet in the Gun or its not over yet classics.

I went to Max Graham's Transport 4 release party...he didn't play the album niether did Johnny Vicious at his M.O.S release party.

I understand when a band tours they play their album & the a similar set at every city. He's albums are NOT his OWN material like PVD. They are other ppl's tracks. He's a DJ. He's more concerned w/reaching the masses than being cutting edge & pushing the envelope. He's become very predictable. There's no excuse for playing the same set everywhere. He's thinks we are uneducated that we don't realize he's playing tracks that 3 yrs old.

isnt that what a DJ does? reach the masses, NOT pushing envelope. cutting edge and pushing envelope are things a producer does. and as far as playing all the same records... abtsportsline just explained why he plays all the same records. open your eyes dipshit!

Twilogoddess, you have some issues. i mean damn, calm the hell down, smoke a fat one, do somethin

Very mature newbie. How are old are u 16?
I'm calm...we are just debating here. I figured out why U guys don't care that he's playin the same outdated records cause U go out 1x a month & it doesn't matter. Well I see a World Class DJ every wk & I expect to hear upfront tunes & ground breaking sets. I don't wanna go hear a DJ play all the records from his album.
