Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has admitted that the club are looking at legal issues, ahead of their appointment of a new manager.

Shepherd has admitted the club need to be aware of what he describes as a 'legal minefield'.

The Magpies supremo admits the club will talk to anyone they feel is appropriate.

"I know the fans are impatient. But I am as impatient as they are." Shepherd told the Evening Chronicle.

"But what I have got to do is what is best for Newcastle United, not what is best for my popularity.

"We don't want any knee-jerk reaction and we cannot rush into anything.

"We are trying to do things correctly and professionally.

"Don't forget there is a legal minefield out there and we have got to observe all the rules of The Premiership.

"But we are talking to everyone we are legally entitled to and those who we feel merit our consideration.

"What we must not forget is that it is the future of Newcastle United which is at stake here and the most important thing is that we get the right man."

Speculation is now rife that Steve Bruce and David O'Leary are Shepherd's preferred choices - given that he has admitted that legal ramifications are an issue being looked at by the club and both those managers would need to be freed from their contracts at their respective clubs.

Terry Venables, Gordon Strachan and Graeme Souness are still believed to be under consideration, but Shepherd appears to be closing on his main targets.

Alan Shearer ruled himself out of the running on Thursday, meaning the club will not be appointing Sir Bobby Robson's successor from within St James' Park.

Next Newcastle Manager: Bruce 5/2; Venables 7/2; O'Leary 5/1; Strachan 8/1; Curbishley, McClaren, Shearer 16/1; Allardyce, O'Neill 20/1; Graham, Hoddle 25/1; Keegan 28/1; bar 33/1 -

Same here. But if you look at our defence now, we dont really have any outstanding defenders. If we do decide to buy now it wont be til January and by that time, with the current defence, our season will be over

Posted by Simcut on Sep-03-2004 22:55:

Yep, a fking disgrace, where was this "suprise" signing we were going to make Freddy

Posted by czechstar00 on Sep-04-2004 02:12:

I think a German minded tactician like Hitzfeld could surely patch things up. He'd be my no 1 choice at the moment to succeed Bobby Robson

Although im not convinced he will stick with the players we have at the club currently..European managers always buy foreign players. Eg - Mourinho,Benitez.

So that could possibly lead to Jenas,Ambrose,Bowyer etc departing.

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-04-2004 02:41:

I would be extremely happy if we got Hitzfeld, he is in a different league to the other managers we are being linked with. His record is brilliant and he is a truly world renowned coach. He would bring quality coaching staff with him as well. When you look at the lack of development in most of our youngsters and the fact we seem to get more niggling hamstring injuries than other Premiership sides then our coaching setup must be pretty poor. Hitzfeld is very well respected in Germany having won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and five titles in six years plus the Champions League with Bayern Munich, he's bound to have excellent contacts and could find the pick of the German youngsters like Wenger does in France. A world renowned coach makes it easier to attract big name players as well.

Hitzfeld hasn't been officially linked, NUFC.com claim that he has flown into Newcastle today but they also state that this is just a rumour which has some substance but could be wrong.

Sadly it does look like Shepherd wants a British manager, but I really hope the Hitzfeld rumours are true as he is a cut above the other candidates.

Posted by czechstar00 on Sep-04-2004 04:15:

For sure quality coach staff is something that we lack. Does anyone know if John Carver's was Bobby's choice? Come to think of it i dont think Bobby introduced any new staff, they were all there when he arrived in 99.

Posted by Turner on Sep-04-2004 11:02:

I wouldnt really be bothered if we had a massive change around in players.

I wouldnt be bothered if we got rid of:

Jenas
Dyer
Bramble
Hughes

A few others aswell, maybe Viana could make an impact with a new manager if hes given the chance as well all know he has the potential.

One thing which needs to be done is for management to start to threaten to players, IMO the majority of Newcastle players couldnt give a fuck. They come for the money and thats it. There needs to be some big changes, alot of the players just think its a kick about and they dont give 100%.

One bad thing though with getting a foreign manager, which has been mentioned, they decide to buy from abroad and if Newcastle were to get the german manager the chances are he would probalby over a period of time buy 4-5 german players which i wouldnt really be keen on.

No talks with Venables - Shepherd

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has denied having talks with Terry Venables over the vacant manager's position at St James' Park.

There was a growing belief on Thursday that Venables, the man who helped Middlesbrough out of a hole but could not halt Leeds' tailspin, is at the top of the Magpies' wanted list.

It was thought that he - like Sir Bobby Robson, a former Barcelona and England manager - had discussed the possibility of taking over on a caretaker basis.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes temporarily suspended betting on Thursday afternoon after the 61-year-old's odds, which started at 50-1 earlier this week, were slashed from 11-2 to 4-5.

However, Shepherd told The Guardian: "Terry Venables has not been here. I have not spoken to Terry Venables. I can't remember the last time I saw him."

It wouldnt suprise me if Shepherd was lieing one once again.

As long as they are good players I wouldn't mind. I don't think Arsenal fans are complaining about the French players Wenger has bought. Hitzfeld's contacts and reputation in Germany would mean we would have a good chance of landing young German stars at good prices the way Wenger does.

Hitzfeld is one of the most successful European coaches of the last decade. Real Madrid, Man Utd, Barcelona, AC Milan and Germany all tried to get him when he was at Bayern Munich and he turned them down. He said recently he would move to the Premiership over Spain or Italy because he speaks good English, and as Liverpool and Chelsea have just got new managers and Arsenal and Man Utd are happy with theirs, he may just be considering us. Apparently the German press linked Hitzfeld with the Newcastle job this morning, although I'm still sceptical.

According to teletext, Newcastle are looking for a premiership Manager.

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-05-2004 02:41:

Lies from Shepherd this year:

January: "Woodgate is not for sale at any price. They can have him over my dead body."
August: Woodgate goes to Real Madrid.

June: "You don't sack Bobby Robson"
August: Bobby Robson is sacked.

August: "The fans will be pleasantly surprised with the Woodgate transfer, we didn't go into this without a long term plan. All will be revealed soon".
September: Not a penny of the Woodgate money spent, transfer window slams shut.

September: "I have not spoken with Venables, I can't even remember the last time I saw him".
September: The next day Venables says he had a good chat with Shepherd and they got on well.

What the fuck is Shepherd doing to our club? All we want is the truth. I see we are considering spending half of the Woodgate money getting Steve Bruce as manager, he has never finished above 11th in the Premier League! Freddy Shepherd has this obsession with getting a geordie manager, but Bruce is a cock plus he's a Man Utd apologist.

There is only one way Shepherd can redeem himself and it is by providing a quality replacement for Robson, someone like Hitzfeld.

Finally a bit of good news:

FIFA have ruled in our favour in the legal battle with French side Le Havre. Charles N'Zogbia is now free to start playing for us. He is an 18 year old left-back/left-mid and SkySports say he is rated one of the brightest young prospects in France. He comes from the same club as Le Tallec and Pongolle.

Well, its some good news i suppose.

Just need a manager and several new players now.

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-06-2004 10:11:

I can't believe it, it's Graeme Souness!

This is the last straw, I am absolutely livid about this. Our club is being run by a loose cannon; he has sold our best player, completely neglected our defence and not spent the money, undermined the manager in front of the players, sacked the manager 4 games into the season, replaced him with a much worse manager and lied constantly to the fans. Is he trying to ruin our club or is he just a complete retard? There will be a massive backlash in Newcastle over this with a lot of people calling for Shepherd's head. Just what the fuck is he playing at?

Posted by TJM on Sep-06-2004 10:49:

Ha just seen the Souness thing on Sky. Never saw that one coming!

I would imagine hes been brought in from a discipline point of view as much as anything, lets be honest Souness can be a strict nasty piece of work if anyones playing up and there's a few at Newcastle (Dyer, Bramble, Bellamy et al) who like a night out and need slapping into shape every now and then.

On the playing side its hard to see which way it'l go. He won everything in Scotland at Rangers (not difficult tho), dismantled a great Liverpool side, mediocre achievments in Europe and then after taking them up he's struggled to do much with a promising Blackburn side.

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-06-2004 11:14:

Sounness's record is bleak reading to say the least. He has the tactical nous of Kevin Keegan with the man management of Glenn Hoddle. The worst possible appointment Shepherd could have made. The biggest insult is that we have to pay compensation for him as well.

He's not a disciplinarian he's just a grumpy bastard with a history of falling out with players and pissing off dressing rooms. He has vendettas against certain players and drops them because of his childish attitude. I wonder if he'll bring George Weah's cousin with him?

I've just been reading a Blackburn forum and their fans aren't that bothered he's leaving, they think he was 2 or 3 games away from the sack anyway.

Freddy Shepherd is taking this club on a downward spiral, I don't know what his agenda is but it seems to be totaly self-motivated. Sack him now.

Posted by Simcut on Sep-06-2004 15:38:

Unhappy

what the bloody fuck!

Championship for us next season.

Posted by Turner on Sep-06-2004 16:02:

Well, when i heard the news i felt rather sick.

Lets give him a chance and if he doesnt prove a hit within the next 12 months, get rid of him.

I doubt he is the manager newcastle need, but all we can do is wait and see now.

Posted by TJM on Sep-06-2004 17:03:

Souness just seems such a random appointment though, they must have been knocked back by a fair few people before they got down the list to him.

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-06-2004 17:21:

I'd rather have Strachan than Souness, but we don't seem to have made any approach for him. Watch Blackburn get him now

The only consolation is that he's not Terry Venables. And apparently Souness is going to be bringing his coaching staff with him, which means Dean Saunders will be our striking coach! Can you picture 'Deano' teaching Shearer how to be a striker?!

Freddy Shepherd is a very dodgy bloke, we all know that, but what he has done to this club lately beggars belief. I don't normally subscribe to conspiracy theories but something doesn't add up, the decisions over the past month have been inexplicable, and he is now lying to fans almost on a daily basis. Shepherd's son is a consultant for Stretford's Proactive Sports group, Stretford is a close friend of Shepherd and also an agent of Souness. Similarly, Stretford is an agent of Rooney and the bidding war started by Newcastle resulted in Stretford copping a couple of million quid, while Shepherd didn't seem very bothered as he pulled out of the bidding. Freddy will live by the sword and die by the sword. I wonder when he'll be off to Gibraltar to meet up with Hall and count the millions they've taken out of the club. Man Utd's shareholders demand transparency with deals like these, unfortunately Newcastle don't disclose their finances so we don't know where the money is going, other than the fact that Douglas Hall (who lives in Gibraltar) and Freddy Shepherd are two of the highest paid football chairmen around.

With the media desperate to ruin us this could be a very trying season, but we have to get behind the new manager, give him a chance and hopefully get ourselves back up the table. It's difficult to lift my spirits at the moment though, what a depressing thing to wake up to.

Posted by TiestoFanMatt on Sep-07-2004 00:32:

I feel really sorry for you guys up there in the north. Blackburn, in my opinion, has massive potential to be a top 6 team in the Prem, but Souness, well he somehow makes them relegation candidates. He fucked up Liverpool, and i got a really bad feeling he will do the same to Newcastle.

Still think it was wrong to sack Bobby after 4 games, feel bad for the bloke, because all whats happened now is the team know they can now win if they are pissed off for some reason, they can talk to the media about their own opinions on tactics, and get away with it. I heard Freddy and Bobby had a really good relationship and it was really hard for him to sack Bobby? Oh well he seems like a rate bell end, can see what happened to Derby (With our chairman appointing Gregory), with you maybe going further down the league. It isnt a unrealistic thought, just look at some big teams now, Sheff Weds, Leeds, both were once massive teams!

On a quick side note, Robson has been refurbishing his new home in the north east, but has decided not to move in because he is broken up so much about being sacked, and doesnt want to live near Newcastle and be around the people as he is so upset. Read that today, poor guy

Cool

im sure it was said he's only contracted until the end of the season as our manager, if he sorts out the dressing room that'll do me, fucking dyer, little twat

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-07-2004 13:31:

I read that Souness is on a 5 year contract.
