Souness speaks:

"You have no idea just how excited I am about coming to Newcastle United and I cannot wait for Monday to come round. It cannot come quickly enough for me.

"I keep hearing that I wasn't first choice for the job. But I don't care if I was 10th or 25th choice for the Newcastle United job. And I think and believe I am the best man for it.

"I could not be more delighted that I have got it and I am quite naturally hoping to bring some success to Newcastle United. My thinking is that I am taking over a fantastic situation with Newcastle United Football Club.

"If ever a club was geared to success then that club is Newcastle United. In fact, there isn't a team in the Premiership like them.

"I don't think even Roy Keane could describe Newcastle fans as the prawn sandwich brigade. In fact, I would say Newcastle United fans are unique in the Premiership.

"They remind me of the Rangers fans in Glasgow. Like those fans, Newcastle United is the most important thing in their lives. Newcastle supporters have so much passion and when I've been there my recollection is that they are up and out of their seats backing their team, and I love that.

"Of course, when you have a passionate crowd like that you have to produce it on the field and I am aware of that.

"You would think I was going to come in and nail people to the wall judging by what I have heard and read. But that's not the way it's going to be. What I want to do is what is best for Newcastle United.

"Yes, I have discipline in my own life and I expect every Newcastle United player to be disciplined. I want every player to respect each other and everything connected with the football club.

"If they do that then there won't be any problems.

"In any case I am not the horrible hard man people seem to think I am. If you don't believe me, just ask my wife."

Very good playing the "I love the fans" card.

He's forgotten other massive soundbite however, where was: "I love Alan Shearer and look forward to working with him"

Sam happy to snub Magpies to see out Bolton contract

Sam Allardyce has admitted that he was sounded out by Newcastle to replace Sir Bobby Robson as manager at St James' Park.

Allardyce revealed that Newcastle made a tentative enquiry about his availability but was happy to reject their overtures and carry on at Bolton to see out the remainder of his 10-year contract.

"I don't know whether I've made the right decision," he told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph. "Only time will tell but I believe that the football club in general is moving in the right direction. It hasn't achieved all it can achieve yet and I want to drive it on."

Newcastle went on to appoint Graeme Souness as Robson's successor but Allardyce, who was never officially offered the post, admitted he was "hugely flattered" to be linked with the vacancy.

"It was talked about and I pondered it but I never really got offered it," he added. "But if I'd pushed it hard or walked out, I might have got it.

"I was hugely flattered. It's great to be associated with such a massive club but the chairman didn't want me to go and I didn't want to walk out, so I made the decision to stay.

"What has happened here over the last five years is what has kept me. Under any other circumstances, I should have gone to Newcastle, but perhaps it was the right club at the wrong time.

"There's too much here to leave. I had a look at it and made the decision."

10 year contract?

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-09-2004 18:02:

Sounds to me like we could have got him had we really wanted to.

But we would have to pay off the rest of his contract which would have cost millions.

Freddy's main target was either Bruce or Shearer, he has always said he wants another geordie to take over from Bobby. When both of them declined, he was forced to cast his net wider, which he should have done from the beginning. Terry Venables, I suspect, was only ever a backup in case time dragged on and noone came forward.

John Carver will manage the team for the Blackburn game as Souness starts his job on Monday.

I'm not sure if Butt is fit for Saturday though, he missed both England games with a hamstring injury. He's supposed to be nearly fit but whether he'll recover in time remains to be seen.

Charles N'Zogbia started his first game for the reserves in left midfield and assisted Ameobi's goal. He's been given the number 14 shirt so they obviously think he's good enough for the first team soon. I hope so because that will give some competition for Robert.

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-10-2004 00:21:

The media are at it again, The Sun's "exclusive" today is that Kluivert and Souness have had a bust up already because Souness wanted him to play in the reserve game against Wolves but he didn't turn up.

This is a made up story but not even a good one. Firstly, Souness doesn't begin as Newcastle manager until next monday, he's not allowed to enter the training ground yet. Secondly, he won't even have heard of half of our reserve team so why on earth would he be selecting it? He doesn't even have that authority anyway. Another pathetic story from the Sun aimed at unsettling our squad, I can only assume Freddy Shepherd really did something to piss them off cos this story is rather desperate.

Fresh start for Souness charges - Murray

Newcastle players will start with a clean slate when Graeme Souness takes over on Monday, according to his number two Alan Murray.

The 53-year-old has played and worked with Souness' and believes the new Magpies boss will not judge the squad before seeing them train.

The final weeks of Sir Bobby Robson's reign was blighted by reports of player unrest but Murray insists the squad will be given the chance to prove their commitment.

"I don't think Graeme is as confrontational as people have made out," he said. "He'll go to St James' on Monday with no preconceived ideas about any players and judge them on what he hears and sees himself.

"Indeed, he's as mature at this present time as any time I have ever known him.

"But what has not changed is his mental strength and his single mindedness. He knows what he wants at Newcastle, which is also what the fans want. And he also knows that he needs to get it."

Walker-born Murray has known Souness since they both played at Middlesbrough in the 1970s.

The former Hartlepool and Darlington manager is aware of the task the 51-year-old has taken on, but believes chairman Freddy Shepherd has made a wise investment.

"Obviously, I'm a bit biased, but as a life-long Newcastle supporter, I've got to say this is a great appointment for the club," he added.

"Don't forget, I've watched Graeme Souness' career since we were both together at Middlesbrough as kids and shared the same digs in the mid-1970s.

"Nobody knows him better than I do. I've seen how he works and he can handle the top jobs - and nobody needs to tell me what a big job Newcastle is.

"It's a pressure job, but if there is anyone who can handle the pressure, it's Graeme.

"They have some big, big personality players at St James', but that will not be a problem to him. They will respect him because of the way he conducts himself and how he handles situations involving themselves.

"His philosophy has always been that managers don't pick football teams. It's the players who pick the team by the way they play, and Newcastle players will find that if they play well, then they will be in his team."

TBH I don't think Sam really considered it, he'd have had a think about it, but he's got a chance to do something at a club he loves, and loyalty at the end of the day comes through, it'd be like trying to get shearer to manage man utd or something, there's still the good loyalties where it's needed

We bossed them in every area of the park, and O'Brien is now our joint top scorer

Charles N'Zogbia got his debut, he came on in the 92nd minute to a good reception but the referee blew his whistle 4 seconds later so he never got a touch!

We still have Butt, Taylor, Bramble, Bernard and Ambrose to come back from injury this week.

Good result for us, superb start for Souness's reign in charge!

Andy O'Brien joint top scorer? fuck me!

Whats happening with John Carver now that Souness is going to take over? I hope he has a role at the club still.

Oh yeah, I'm off on Tuesday to watch Arsenal vs PSV, should be a cracking game :-) my best friend is a gooner and he had a spare ticket, hey its Champ League and its good football to watch, a bit cheaper to get to than St James's for me at the mo lol

I trust you'll be rooting for PSV?

O'Brien's goal was good, the sort of goal you'd see from Defoe. He swivelled his man well on the corner of the six yard box and stuck it past Friedel.

That was our first clean sheet since the Marseille home game, which unsurprisingly Woodgate played in.

I'll actually be rooting for Arsenal, I respect them so much as a team, unbelievable talent there, especially Reyes..... sheesh!

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-11-2004 21:00:

Pah, we matched them twice last season! We could have won at Highbury if it wasn't for a stupid late penalty and Woodgate played Henry and Reyes off the park at St James'.

Apparently Fulham dominated Arsenal today for the first half, the referee awarded Fulham a penalty and then changed his mind, then disallowed a goal from Fulham after that. Dodgy! I notice Man Utd scored an injury time equaliser for the second game in a row, and both were handballs.

O'Brien's turn in the penalty area before he smacks it past Friedel with his left foot

Liam O'Brien
Andy O'Brien
Any, any, any O'Brien!
Who put the ball in the mackems' net?
O'Brien O'Brien

Carver keen on management role

John Carver has admitted he has set his sights on returning to St James' Park one day - as Newcastle manager.

The 38-year-old Geordie is clearing his desk at the stadium after having his contract as first-team coach terminated to make way for new manager Graeme Souness' backroom team.

But Carver, who rose through the coaching ranks on Tyneside under Ruud Gullit and is now being linked with the vacant Preston job, insists he is determined to continue his progression with football.

And he sees no reason why he cannot go some way to emulating one very famous manager who also started out as Sir Bobby Robson's number two.

"I'll have to wait and see what my next move is going to be, but I want to go into management," said Carver, who led his beloved Magpies to a stirring 3-0 win over Blackburn.

"I would like to be Newcastle manager, but I will probably have to go away and learn my trade first.

"I wasn't a top player, but I've come through the coaching ranks here. Just look at somebody like Jose Mourinho and everything he has achieved.

"It is a long way off for me, but he started off as Robson's assistant, so it can be done."

Somehow i cant ever see Carver being manager of Newcastle.

According to the Spanish press today, Woodgate is being investigated for possession of cocaine.

Rather gutting for Real if it was true, he gets put behind bars just after they paid that money for him.

It would be hilarious if we have ripped Real Madrid off for 14M

But I wonder if we could get in any trouble if it turns out we knew about his problems and didn't tell them?

I doubt it, I doubt Newcastle would have known. I cant see us getting in trouble if we did, his personal life doesnt havent anything to do with the club IMO.

LMAO! if thats true PLEEEEEEASE can I have Kate Lawler, please plese please!

oh yeah, the one that gets me is that bullshit about Jaap Stam's book, strange how after he left Man Utd he got done for drugs at Lazio, I reckon Man U found out and sold him before it came out.

Defender Johnsen lands short-term Newcastle deal

Newcastle have confirmed the signing of former Aston Villa defender Ronny Johnsen until January.

The former Manchester United player was a free agent after he was released by Villa - and is the first signing by new manager Graeme Souness.

The central defender has been training with the Magpies and has undergone several fitness tests before Souness decided to offer him a deal.

The 35-year-old played in United side that secured the 1999 treble with victory in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

His last appearance was his 61st cap for Norway against Wales in May.

pretty shitty performance, Nicky Butt - what the fuck? :|

NEWCASTLE UNITED 2 - 0 HAPOEL SAKHNIN
(Kluivert '2)
(Kluivert '42)

What a disgusting performance from the Israelis, half of their team could have been sent off but the referee allowed the game to descend into a very ugly affair, it was like a prison match in the second half and the Israelis were trying to take our players out of the game Dyer and Hughes both limped off injured but I wouldn't be surprised if the whole team are carrying knocks.

One of them blatantly tried to break Jenas's leg in the second half when he was nowhere near the ball and just rammed his studs into his shin right in front of the ref. The referee only gave a yellow for it! Unbelievable. And Butt, who had only been on the pitch 2 minutes and 14 seconds, was so angry he came on and grabbed one of them by the throat. Given ran the length of the pitch to try and diffuse the argument but Nicky Butt was arguing with all their players and even their coaching staff who had obviously told their players at half time to try and injure us. Bellamy came off the subs bench to get involved.

Newcastle should have put this game away in the first half but we wasted chances and played sloppy football. Kluivert just looks world class, he was turning them inside out with his trickery, pace and strength, playing lovely through balls and took his chances to score twice, one of them a typical poachers goal and the other a bullet header.

Milner, Robert and Kluivert all had good games, but Dyer and Ameobi were poor.
