btw...i'm so glad they're tearing down yankee stadium and building a new stadium across the street (and not in another part of the tri state area)

it's an outdated park that, aside from its history, had nothing really going for it.

now if they will do the same to fenway...i'll be a very happy man

aside from history?!?!?!? History is something worth saving. Although i agree that building the stadium in the same neighborhood was the right move. Now the city should take the initiative to redevelop other parts of SoBronx, especially the concourse.

Now, Shea has absolutely nothing going for it. Not only do they need a new stadium for the mets, but they should've moved to another part of queens instead of putting the stadium in the parking lot. Perhaps LI City where it would be more accessible and actually part of a neighborhood would have been a better choice.

Well, before anything happens to fenway, i need to get my ass up there for a game. I would love to see a game in that park. I'm not sure a new stadium is highly likely in the near future given Fenway has sold out every game for the last 7 or so years. I think fenway has the highest average priced tickets of any ball park. In fact, they can probably raise the prices and still sell out consistently.

Ive been to Fenway a few times and it's a great atmosphere...Never seen the Yankees there but I've always have a good time....It's a great little stadium....

As for Yankee stadium,,,it's a sad story..What is it with Americans and tearing down history....Are they at least thinking of building some sort of museum on the current site????....If not,,,when the bulldozers go in I'm chaining myself to the yellow pole.....

They're going to keep the diamond where it is and turn the old site into a park. So you can, in theory, run the same bases as all the Yankee greats.

the location of shea works. three major highways are around it and easily accessible by bus, subway, and LIRR. all the junk shops will be gone by 2009 as well.

When you say junk shops I take it you mean Mets souvenir shops....

As Shamus mentioned, they're perserving the baseball field. That's enough history to save. All the classic touches that was in the old yankee stadium was removed from the renovation in the 1970s. It looks very bland and concrete. Yeah, the vibe is there for the games, but a great stadium enviroment has nothing to do with how good or bad the ballpark is.

Fenway is a step up from Yankee Stadium, but it's still not a good place to watch a game. Yes it's a intimate bandbox with a rabid fan base. However, unless you're 5 feet 4 inches and 110 pounds, you're not going to sit comfortably in your seats. It's good for a one time visit just to say you've been there and that's about it.

edit: if you want to watch a game at a classic ballpark that's great, go to dodger stadium or wrigley field

don't be too excited about being at shea the first time. It's a piece of shit stadium. It's a real shame.

having accessibility by highway doesn't necessarily make for a good location. Giants stadium is accessible by the turnpike, route 3, and route 17, noone is going to argue the location is great. Granted, it doesn't have the train accessibility yet. But when NJ transit and the light rail are extended to Giants stadium it still isn't going to be a good location.

A stadium is great because it is incorporated into its surrounding neighborhood. For example, Wrigley, Fenway, Yankees Stadium (albeit, the worst neighbhorhood), and Camden Yards, are great stadiums. A great stadium should be more than just a stadium, it should be a place that sustains and enlivens a neighborhood. This is part of the reason all the new stadiums are being built in downtown areas. Citipark has the look of a neighborhhod park, but it lacks any real substance. It's a real shame because the stadium looks amazing.

not necessarily

take Citizens Bank Park in Philly

despite the fact that it's surrounded by a parking lot in the Philly Sports Complex, it's an excellent ballpark.

you don't know that yet because the surrounding area hasn't been developed yet. it will be different for 2009. and flushing is just a stone's throw away anyway.

maybe i wasn't clear. Sure the stadiums can be nice and have great amenities; however, a truly great stadium incorporates the feeling of a neighborhood. When people go out to fenway, camden yard, and wrigley, the people go early and spend time in the neighborhood drinking, etc... It creates more of an environment. Im talking more on the social level.

I wasn't denying that a stadium can be nice outside of a neighborhood, but building a stadium in a parking lot is definitely anti-social in sense. Yes it's still a gathering place, but its a very artificial gathering place. People only go anywhere near places like the future Citipark, and citizens bank, because of the games.

I think this misses the point. Plus there's no way you can develop the area around the stadium because it's in a park. Im talking about real commercial and residential neighborhoods. The fact that flushing is near ads nothing. If it was actually on a street in flushing, that would be another story.

I originally got what you meant. The neighborhood is a factor in judging how great a ballpark is. However, I strongly don't agree that it's the #1 factor that all ballparks should be judged on. If that is the case, people would have waxed poetic over the original Busch Stadium in St. Louis. There are many factors, such as view past the outfield, sightlines, exterior and interior architecture just to name a few. If I didn't count the neighborhood at all, I would have said that Citizens Bank Park is the best ballpark in the majors. It's in the top 5 in ballparks I've visited, however it's not #1 on my list purely because of location.

sure the neighborhood around fenway it's fun, but it doesn't take away from the fact that fenway isn't a good ballpark.

the edge of the citi field will be on 126th street in flushing, which is NOT part of the park. it'll be adjacent next to the current auto junk yards. eventually, those business will be displaced and replaced by new development

actually...since mid to late 2003. When I was there in April 2003, It wasn't sold out.

They're not tearing down the Fens, they've spent large sums of money in each of the past three years renovating and tweaking the stadium so that it will last at least another 10-15 years.

My only problem with Fenway is that high ticket prices have driven the lower to even middle classes out of the ballpark. It's a shame that the true life and blood of Boston baseball has a very tough time affording tickets to Sox games. Other than that, there is no better atmosphere in which to take in a game. Period.

WRONG!

It's called Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

It's not comparable at all. Boston is crazily obsessed with the Red Sox, but it pales compared to Red Bird Nation

if you're wondering why, it's the only thing st. louis has going for them.
