Wasn't Shinjo once upon a time the all time Japanese saves leader in Japan, strange how alot of these players can't get it done here..Kaz Matsui somehow comes here and forgets how to play defense, hideki Irabu throws batting practice balls over the middle of the plate......really odd.I wish the Mets could lure sasaki back but after the way he left the Mariners to go back home i don't see that happening

yea he was the saves leader over there, they used to call him Mr. Zero. i guess the game in japan is just different and some of the players cant adapt quick enough or cant keep up with the rest of the league. look at hideo nomo. that guy used to be filthy on the mound but last i heard he was in the minors. i just hope that tadahito iguchi doesnt become another victim. also, i heard during the year that irabu was tearing it up back in japan.

yes i heard that too ..
pretty strange he lost his confidence while playing for the yanks .. i guess he couldn't take the pressure from "the boss" and torre ..

but i don't know .. he just seems overweight to me for a pitcher .. then again, david wells has success, and he is massively overweight .. hahhahahah

there are a lot of big pitchers

National League Cy Young Race. My opinion:

1. Cris Carpenter
2. Roger Clemens
3. Pedro Martinez

Here's the stats to backup my thinking:

----- IP - ERA - WHIP - WINS - HR Alw - Opponent OPS:
C Car 220 - 2.21 - 0.97 - 21 - 15 - .578
Roger 189 - 1.57 - 0.92 - 11 - 8 - .504
Pedro 195 - 2.95 - 0.92 - 13 - 19 - .578

----- Run Supp - CG - Quality Starts
C Car 5.2 - 7 - 27
Roger 3.6 - 1 - 24
Pedro 5.0 - 3 - 21

Pedro's weakness is clearly the long ball. Roger has quite a bit lower OPS surely attributable to only allowing 8 homers. That's why his ERA is so astronomical, he doesn't give up the big ones. Compare that to Randy Johnson who has given up a whopping 29 HR's. In comparison to history, Roger's ERA is clearly mind boggling! Pedro's run support is actually almost the same as Carpenter but Roger's is clearly worse than all. However, I give the slight nudge to Carpenter over Roger just because he has 7 complete games which is saying to me he doesn't tire his bullpen as much. Plus, he's giving his team longer production of great pitching giving his team more assured wins because it's not left up to the bullpen to decide the game. Lastly, I think Carpenter has been the most consistent start to start as seen with his quality starts. He has one more start than Roger and Pedro but has nearly 3 more games of innings. Again, he eats more innings.

Carpenter is also in first, Houston looks like a strong wild card, and the Mets are in last but that really isn't Pedro's fault but still, a point in talking about valuable to ?

Just my thoughts...

Agreed and I don't think many Mets fans can argue this one after Carps performance against them last night, he locked them down big style. Carpenter has been incrediblr this year, lets hope he kkeps this form into October.

The Indians are looking good right now I have to say. 1.5 game lead in the WC.

The Unit needs to deliver tomorrow for the Yanks. If he doesn't, the East is probably out of reach.

Babby Bonds is to be activated on Monday! In a backup role ...

Can the Giants try a final push for the division title? Those Padres look too comfortable in that division ...

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Sep-11-2005 13:37:

pretty weird that you also left out dontrelle willis ..

20 wins is pretty good. he got rocked a couple of games here and there, but still has to get consideration for locking down the rest of this opponents ..

yet carpenter has to get the cy.

i don't think win/loss record should be a factor in the CY young award. if you're era is low enough, it shouldnt matter if your streak is 1-11

if that was the big factor in decisioning, then clemens would win hands down.

it's going to be close between clemens and carpenter. my heart says carpenter, but i am sure the committee is going to job him, and give clemens his unprecedented (7th ???) cy young award .. he is getting up there as best pitchers with nolan ryan and sandy koufax .

I agree with you for the most part but a pitcher that lasts longer give his team a better chance at winning because it's less reliant on the bullpen. Carpenter eats more quality innings, Clemens doesn't go as deep in games. ERA can be influenced by defense and the parks that people pitch in (mostly thinking about home games). It surely is still an important stat but not the only one.

Tough call

But yeah Dontrelle should be up there too but still I like the other 3 better...

To tell you the truth, I really don't want to see Houston Astros winning the wildcard. I hope an NL East team will win that wildcard, but at this pace, NL East teams will drain each other slowly, while Astros feast on the weak central and west

Posted by Mebot on Sep-12-2005 02:47:

Unfortunately you're right, and my Nationals are slowly, yet surely going the way of the buffalo.

Still though I had once incredible summer of passionately following my team in Washington, and for that I thank them. Frank Robinson too for being a hardcore curmedgeon!

but you're only as good as the players behind you though right? Nah, I love Clemens...still a little miffed about him leaving the Yanks though. sometimes these professional atheletes need to tell their wives to shut up.

should doug christie follow this advice also ? maybe he'll go back to his good basketball days when he was with the toronto raptors ...

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Sep-12-2005 21:27:

the Toronto Raptors and the rest of the NBA can rot in Hell as far as I'm concerned.

I am thinking andruw Jones will be this years version of late 90's Brady Anderson...with this ridiculous power stroke he has developed this year..which will more than likely go away next year

Thumbs up
