I've been trying to send picture messages for a while now, but kept getting an error when setting up my account.

So I called customer service and tried to fix it.

Well the rep on the phone (this is how awesome they are) told me that I've been paying for browser service all this time (I had no idea, just goes to show how important it is to check the details of the bill), and that for the same price I could get MORE services.

So yeah, for the same amount of money I was paying before for call display/message center/call waiting/browser, I now get all those services, plus 200 messages of any kind (text, pic, vid) a month.

Yay!

I'm with Bell, btw. I've never found them to be anything but very helpful, and I've never had an issue with their service.

My buddy who works at RIM has one to play around with, he says the coolest part is being able to walk into a place with a known (to the Blackberry) wifi network and have it switch over from the cellular network to VOIP. I have no idea how this works as I know nothing about the 8820 but it sounds rad.

EXCLUSIVE: AT&T neuters the BlackBerry 8820 in favor of the iPhone

Wow. I must say, this is probably the biggest piece of news weve ever broken here at BlackBerry Cool and possibly the one thats made us the angriest. Weve just received word from one of our friends inside AT&T that the US carrier has been successful in their attempts to lockdown the GPS functionality in their upcoming BlackBerry 8820 so that the only functioning 3rd party software will be TeleNav.

First, this is a major piss off to AT&T customers looking to get their hands on the BlackBerry 8820 mid-September, but whats more important is why AT&T chose to do this. Apparently - and remember, this is coming from someone inside AT&T - the carrier didnt want to launch a device that would seem superior (or be competitive) to the iPhone. Sounds a little crazy, until you realize that a GPS/Wi-Fid device with push email and no funny-texting touch screen thats subsidized in price sounds a bit more appealing than a $500 device that enterprise customers cant use.

Weve been told that RIM was apparently livid over the decision (and with good reason), but AT&T basically said do it or we wont buy the 8820 or any future devices from you and RIM backed down. Our AT&T informant also said that this was a call made by top RIM/AT&T brass, which sheds new light on Jim Balsillies statement that the carriers are one of RIMs three masters.

So, to recap:
The AT&T BlackBerry will have neutered GPS capabilities
The T-Mobile 8820 will be better than the AT&T version
Apple has won the first round against RIM

Lets check that last statement for a second. Our informant was unsure if Steve Jobs called the hit, or if this decision was made solely by AT&T to protect their serious investment in the iPhone. The fact of the matter, however, is that RIMs biggest North American customer just crippled one of their enterprise devices in favor of a consumer device that supposedly doesnt compete with the BlackBerry.

Post a comment and let us know what you think about this crazy news. Personally, we never liked AT&T that much in the first place, but we like them even less for screwing over the BlackBerry faithful so they can make more money.

What I'm loving about Solo which I'll be switching too once my darn phone comes in (on back order)

They offer all their plans (even their BEST ones) on only monthly plans too (no 1, 2 or 3 year contracts if you dont want that).

Ive always like Rogers Mega Incoming plan... but dammit, you hafta stick yourself with a 3 year control.

The Solo plan I'm getting, unlimited income and all that jazz, but month to month... LOVE IT.

If Solo service or customer care or reception pisses me off... next month just say BYE BYE and go back to my Rogers pre-paid which I have currently (and am still happy with at present).

Fuck cancelation fees. Fuck them. Even a 1 year contract for a cell phone I dont wanna be stuck into...

The whole idea for ATT is to make money off the Telenav sales... BlackBerry Maps is free, Telenav is not. ATT gets a cut and you can still use your GPS Same reason that they don't allow 3rd party IM apps on their BlackBerry devices, but instead push their OZ IM app. It's their business decision to only allow the apps they will make money on, which makes sense considering that they subsidize the devices. They are well within their right.

T-Mobile also does this. Also, the BlackBerry and iPhone really cannot be compared.

That being said, the wifi BlackBerrys are pretty sweet regardless. I still prefer the keypad on the Curve though.

No camera on the Blackberry 8820? Shoot. Must be a corporate thing.

When the local work season slacks off in winter I sometimes spend a lot of time in a coffee shop that has free wi-fi. Would be cool to browse web for free on something like an 8820 or iPhone. More handy than bringing in a laptop.

They are designed more for the business person who I don't think
care as much if the phone has a camera or not cuz that doesn't serve their purpose of having one.

They only came out with the camera in a couple of them (Pearl & Curve as far as I know), to market to the younger/non-business crowd.

Me personally, I couldn't care less if it has a camera or not. I am quite content with the products RIM makes without the added feature of a camera.

For those of you who are interested in the iPhone:

New Jersey teen breaks iPhone lock'

By Peter Sevensson, Associated Press

NEW YORK A teenager in New Jersey has broken the lock that ties Apple's iPhone to AT&T's wireless network, freeing the most hyped cellphone ever for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones.

George Hotz, 17, confirmed Friday that he had unlocked an iPhone and was using it on T-Mobile's network, the only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone's cellular technology.

While the possibility of switching from AT&T to T-Mobile may not be a major development for U.S. consumers, it opens up the iPhone for use on the networks of overseas carriers.

That's the big thing, said Mr. Hotz, in a phone interview from his home in Glen Rock.

The phone, which combines an innovative touch-screen interface with the media-playing abilities of the iPod, is sold only in the U.S.

Calls to AT&T and Apple for comment were not immediately returned.

The hack, which Mr. Hotz posted Thursday to his blog, is complicated and requires skill with both soldering and software. It takes about two hours to perform. Since the details are public, it seems likely that a small industry may spring up to buy U.S. iPhones, unlock them and send them overseas.

That's exactly, like, what I don't want, Mr. Hotz said. I don't want people making money off this.

He said he wished he could make the instructions simpler, so users could modify the phones themselves.

But that's the simplest I could make them, Mr. Hotz said.

The modification leaves the iPhone's many functions, including a built-in camera and the ability to access Wi-Fi networks, intact. The only thing that won't work is the visual voicemail feature, which shows voice messages as if they were incoming e-mail.

Mr. Hotz collaborated online with four other people, two of them in Russia, to develop the unlocking process.

Then there are two guys who, I think, are somewhere U.S.-side, Mr. Hotz said.

He knows them only by their online handles.

Nokia 6275i, the Solo Mobile phone I'll be getting for $50 (no contract) when it comes in.

I quite like it, too. Which is great. Because I dislike all the other Solo phones, save for the Krzr... but I'm not paying $300+ dollars for a phone!

Samsung i450

Verry, verry naice!!

Jesus this phone looks HOTT!

Word is out in the mobile community on the 3G-enabled ingenious Samsung i450, a dual slider running on Symbian OS - a reinforcer of the smart i-line of the company's portfolio. Let's remind you of the recently announced Samsung i620, powered by the Windows Mobile OS and sporting a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Both devices will meet the user demands for productivity as they differ only slightly from one another in features.

Samsung i450 is running on Symbian OS 9.2 Series 60 v3.1 operating system - such a decision is probably dictated by the popularity of this OS, compared to Windows Mobile OS. The new slider has a 262K color TFT display with a QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) resolution, the same 2 megapixel camera as in Samsung i620, and a second VGA video calls camera. The integrated memory is as large as 1 GB and is further expandable through a microSD memory card slot. Multimedia features are also at a decent level - you can choose among the available MPEG4, WMA/MP3/AAC and Flash players.

Other features of the Samsung i450 include Bluetooth v2.0, USB support, 3G and HSDPA connectivity and a peculiar speaker, which gets revealed when you slide the phone down (much like Nokia N95), probably boosting the sound of the video/audio player. A certain drawback is the lack of Wi-Fi, a feature spotted in Samsung i620.

There is still no official information of pricing and availability of the device.

That Nokia 6275i looks almost same (a little better) and similar features to the 6300 (pic below) from Fido. One is CDMA and other's GSM. I've got an older Nokia bar phone (3100), works great, very reliable.

The SOLO plans look very similar to Fido. I guess they are going after the same market - young non-business users. According to this page on Wikipedia SOLO was first competing with Virgin but now they have decided the main competition is Fido:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solo_Mobile

I've been using Bell ExpressVu for TV - their customer service in the last year is terrible, several billing screw-ups that took me months to get settled. Maybe the Bell empire is too big - they own SOLO.

Posted by Jem_hadar on Aug-25-2007 14:34:

Thanks for the comments.

EDIT:

Also note, I see on Fido's webpage that that phone without a Fido Agreement (contract) will cost you $300! Wow.

My phone normally would cost $200 (so its cheaper, and personally, I'm with you, I think it looks much nicer/cooler)... But a promo is on for the month of August, so without a contract (no Solo agreement), I'm getting the phone for only $50... which makes the phone even that much sweet, I tell you!!

And, yeah, hear this quite a bit from ppl on here, about Bell. (Though 3 ppl who I work with are with Bell and they have no complaints, I must note)...

So I have no idea if I am going to experience screw ups or not. But since I am not in any sort of contract w/ Solo, if I experience these screw ups, and they dont stop, I can decide at any point if the screw ups arent worth it, and switch back to Rogers prepaid again. I wont have to worry about cancellation preventing fees me from leaving if I get severly dissatisfied w/ my service. With the plan though I'm getting, the Student Talk & Text one, for 35$ with NO CONTRACT, I'm going to hafta be pretty annoyed I think though to leave Solo.

Still waiting for the individual licenses to come out. How much does it suck that the 17 year old beat them to it with the hardware vs software unlock and got his 15 minutes of fame.

I'll be picking up an iphone next week from buffalo once I see this unlocking in action.

Be Cool!

Called Solo Mobile's customer care/service line last night and today, and must say that I'm HIGHLY impressed with them from first impressions!

Wanted to add unlimited mobile browser ($5/month) and something else to my plan to try out, see what I thought, esp especially for the Java Gamil app, which looks VERY swanky and nice (for a phone access to email), esp compared to the mobile HTML version...

Anyways, got that done, had some good chats w/ the guy on the other end... hell we got into various Blackberry discussions, swapping cell phone stories, etc. etc.

Must have been a 20 min call, but only 4 was spent with me adding the 2 features I wanted.

Today, called to cancel one of the features, and again the guy was very personable on the phone, got my request done very quickly w/o any hassle and answered an additional query I had.

He also bumped my unlimited mobile browser add-on date back to the 27th, so that the unlimited usage was retro active (since he saw on my profile that I had some charges when I did some quick browsing 2 days ago before i decided to have the $5/unlimited plan put on.

Thought that was REALLY nice of him, totally something Solo didnt need to do, and I wouldnt expect a cellphone company to do.

Anyways, my first two encounters w/ customer service at Solo are amazing thus far.

Even though Bell owns Solo, I guess Bell's poor/horrible customer service rep doesnt trickle down to them. Thank god!
