Seeing the results gives me as much pleasure as stabbing a pencil repeatedly on my ear.
This DJ Mag poll is too much of a hype engine. I know that's exactly its explicit purpose, but even with that said, I think it garners too much respect. Less than 130 000 people voted in the poll. I think that's a ridiculously low number to back a "world ranking" upon consideration of how many different countries and how many millions of people these DJs have played for over the past year alone. I think that DJ Mag's poll lacks the raw numbers to be credible and always has.
In hindsight, Tiësto did get three in-a-row, and you can't take that away from him, but you also can't say that the DJ Mag poll pulled input from a wide enough population in order to concretely validate what Tiësto achieved; and that's just one example. In other years, the "crown" has been given to Cox, Oakenfold, Sasha, and Digweed with even lower voter turnout for those polls. It just doesn't seem to me that this poll has the right to claim world ranking just because of how people from many countries participate. The fact is there aren't that many votes cast, and people who like their musicians, who have their favourite DJs, or people who like house, prog & trance may not care enough or may not be the kind of person to go on a gimmicky website and plug in a DJ's name.
I think people will like the music they like and a ranking won't really change that. There are legions of die-hard PVD fans that know he's their favourite whether or not a few thousand other people agree. The same goes for Tiësto fans, Armin, Sasha, Digweed, Ferry, and the list goes on.
Though I think it is fair to finally credit Paul Van Dyk for his achievements and abilities in the trance/DJ scene, I believe that this poll is far too flawed to validate slapping numbers on DJs every 12 months. Doesn't Armin Van Buuren deserve better than to be announced as "the number 3 DJ in the world" every time he plays? Don't Sasha & Digweed's achievements speak much louder than the numerical rankings in the poll? Don't we know that a *DJ* poll that puts ATB in the top ten is wrong? Don't we know that a poll listing Matt Darey next to DJ Sammy is weird?
I think those of us that follow this poll, though it does credit some great DJs with attention they deserve, need to put it into perspective and realize that what 123 933 voters think is not the will of all dance music & DJ fans.

Shame he didn't actually mean it as a dig at the list, he was probably just making a casual observation.
