I know it's also a personal taste issue, but look at the reviews all over the internet, everyone thinks they are an extremely good monitor for the price. I do too.

The only thing I've heard about the KRK 8s is that some find the highs a little harsh. Thats it!

The 'eveyone knows' statement I think is not entirely true.

You totally contradict yourself. You start by saying they have a FLAT response, then you say "even if they are colouring the sound a bit".

Come on, which is it??!!

And by the way, thats bollocks about everyone knows the RP8s are not good for production. Put them next to the M1 MK2s and I bet I know what "everyone" would choose.

Is 2gigs of ram nessecary? I was hoping to get by with just 1gig

The key with RAM, just like buying DJ equipment, is that you should spend as much as you can. You can never have too much RAM. If you can possibly afford 2gb then get it. The more you have the better your memory hungry programs will run - even if the app has a minimum requirement of 512mb or 256mb.

Im kinda on a tight budget, i only really have £450 to spend on a laptop, then around £120 for a sound card then a keyboard

I plan on using the laptop for production and im gonna learn ableton on it also

You can get by with 1g no problem, especially if you're producing.

Macs are expensive, but extremely reliable, its an investment not a toy.

And yeah, if you have any other questions just feel free to ask, given the figures you posted regarding your buget its certainly possible to get a great setup with that kind of money (especially in the UK).


My suggestion is, think of the BEST POSSIBLE SET UP YOU WANT, then slowly pick apart at it until you've narrowed it down to exactly what you NEED to get started, then gradually upgrade over time piece by piece.

I have almost the exact same setup for production (minus the x-session); 2.0 ghz Dual Core MacBook w/ 2gb ram. Reason and Live run great on it...

I also have a BCR2000 and M-Audio Projectmix stashed away.

i meant that every piece of analog equipment colours the passing signal. but for production some colouring is ok...

personally I think RP8s sound dull and have poor low-freq response

When I produce i am often running 30+ channels on ableton with different effects on EACH channel.

if anything i'd say a gig would be enough for djing and the opposite for producing.

Making tunes works your cpu MUCH harder than playin' em.

I really like the tannoy precision series and the ellipse series. Very nice frequency response very neautral and uncolored.

not necessarily true...thats why you can freeze your vsts and use audio clips rather than individually generated sound peices...plenty of people get by using 1gb (including myself). although on a PC i guess what you're saying is true lol.

I've never had any problems producing using only a gig. I've done it with even less. Hell give me an old Atari and some analog synths!

Oh I'm not saying you can't produce on a gig, I did on 512 for ages, I'm just saying theres one way you could convince me it makes sense for producers to have 1 gig while djs need 2 - and I hate freezing tracks if I can avoid it.

Hell, I still use my Ataris which are fully expanded to a whopping 4Mb each

Definitely need more RAM for producing than DJing.

But yes, I've done it on a gig or less for years.
