Last night. I was cutting through a carrot Snapped clean off, and flung back into my chest (thankfully the non-sharp edge hit me flat, because the rest of it is sharp as FUCK).

I'm pretty sure it'll be covered by whatever warranty they have (which had better be decent, considering it cost me $140 to buy the fucking knife). Now I just have to find the receipt :/

Please post pics of the shop you bought it from's sign and we can judge them for that too.

lol, a carrot?

If you want a decent set of japanese kitchen knives, Ran or Togen are fairly much the premium, the Global where sort of the mid-range japanese ones. Very expensive but you'll only ever have to buy them once and they last forever.

I kid you not, Lilith, I was cutting through a carrot. The knife hit the cutting board and BAM, snapped. Almost soiled myself

Thanks for the Ran or Togen tip. Do they have metal handles like Global? I kinda prefer otherwise - The metal gets slippery and it's a piss-off to dry it when you're in the middle of doing stuff.

Posted by Lilith on Nov-20-2010 08:56:

They're wooden, don't like a metal handle either, they're too slippery and you'll lop fingers off! (They are insanely sharp if you run them over a wetstone every now and then)

I know 'King of Knives' retail chain sells Ran, but with the way our dollar is you might find them cheaper on the internet/overseas.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing

I've had good luck with a german set of knives had them for over 10 years.

btw, you shouldn't be putting that much force cutting carrots. tip on the board and rocking motion is the proper technique. But I'll say that the metal looks thin compared to Wusthof.

I really wasn't putting much force on it at all, that's why I was so shocked when it snapped. And that's a big motherfucker of a knife, trust me. The metal is not thin at all. The blade there is 24cm (9.5") long

Those Wusthof knives look pretty good though.

probably had some sort of microscopic stress fracture. most of these knives have life time warranty so you should be fine.

Yeah, if I can find the receipt

Most retail policy in regards to returning items in a chain store like Myer is simply to give the customer back their money/or exchange for a new one. Receipt or no receipt. Mostly because they find it easier to live with than some irate lunatic jumping the counter and smashing a broken item in the face of a staff member

Yeah, I've heard that about Myers. Probably will do that, I might give them a call later on.

I've gotten better at bring things back. These companies use that whole "life time" selling point knowing most never take advantage of it. Has to be a big purchase for me to keep the receipt. I've learned the value of stores with good customer service and return/warranty policy. A good company will realize that taking care of a customer problem is the investment of future sales. You can always mail it back to manufacturer as last resort if you want to follow through on principle.

I worked at a walmart in college and an old lady returned a turkey. We didn't sell turkeys but we still took it back. Probably not the best roi on that return since she had clearly lost her mind,.

I phoned CS at Myers. The lady that I spoke to was pretty shocked that a Global knife had even broken, let alone that I wanted to bring it back. She took all my details, and the details of the knife, so when I bring it in they'll have a brand spanking new one waiting for me! They also offered me 50% off any other Global knives I want to buy while I'm there!

When I was @ Best Buy, we had to call the cops because some lady did lose her mind after she wasn't allowed to return her cracked digital picture frame. I should also add that this particular brand was only sold at Radio Shack. She threw the [wrong] box at one of the managers and started screaming, before stomping over to the lines of shopping carts and attempting to kick them over.

Good times, good times.
