That's really the only thing I have to distinguish the two. But, IMO, the best player in the AL this year was David Ortiz. He doesn't play defense, true. But, let's say he did play defense and was TERRIBLE, but put up the exact same numbers. Would he be the MVP then? Or does the MVP have to play good defense as well? Because Ted Williams won two MVPs... and supposedly, he was worse than Manny in Left Field.

As much as I'm a firm believer in a positional player getting the MVP....

Ortiz deserves it hands down

Ive never heard any of the past MVPs winning cause of how they play on the field, they always focus on the bat stats. So its kinda funny how their treating Ortiz.
Willis for Cy Young

Chad Cordero, not Chris

And the Orioles have let go Raffy Palmeiro. He was scheduled to start play against the Red Sox today. I don't blame the Orioles, though. it;s a shame his career ended like this (although he is thinking about the 2006 season, I doubt he'll be playing.)

Dude... I hope you're not serious about Willis just because you're from Miami...

thanks .. yeah chad .. i was probably drunk while typing that post .. ...

anyways, back to raffy .. of all the classless things. a couple of days ago, he pointed the finger at miguel tejada, and said he suppiled him some steroids.

Would you rather have Andruw Jones strike out with a runner on 1st? Or... ground into an inning ending/rally killy double play? I'd take the former any day of the weak. Also, batting average does not matter either.

Also, that hitting drought should only make his stats now even more impressive. He has totally carried the Braves. Without him, they would be terrible.

This is the same scenario as Allen Iverson last year. The 76ers are not the best team in the NBA. Not even close. But, without AI, they would be worse than the Knicks. With him, they make the playoffs. The Braves, without Andruw, would be terrible. With him, they are the NL East champs yet again...

Well, as for Andruw Jones ... I have been watching Braves all season long, so here's my case on him. Early in the season (April/May/beginning of June) he hit about .220 or so, with about 5 HR. In late June/July/August he hit over .300 with amazing numbers. Since then he has been slumping again. I saw him ground out in 3 double plays in the last 3 games, including yesterday's game. The fact that he has so many RBIs is that he is in a position in the lineup to drive in runs, as Furcal, Chipper, Giles and sometimes Francouer (at one point he was in the 3rd spot) got on base during his hot streak.

However, if he does get the MVP - I'll be happy, for my team too. Honestly, I just dont think he deserves it. I am not even sure about Pujors either. We'll see. I think the MVP will be chosen by popularity of choice, so it shouldn't be surprising ...

As for NL Cy Young I expect to see in top 3:

'D-Train' Willis
'Rocket' Clemens
Chris Carpenter

As a cards fan I would love Pujols and Carp to win MVP and Cy Young respectively but something tells me they won't get it.

Pujols deserves one for his sheer consistency over the past 4 years let alone his superb year this year. This year his defence has improved a lot, early on in the season he dug out a lot of poor throws from Eckstein that won the Cards a lot of games. For sheer hitting prowess nobody denies he is in the top few current players in this area and what would be a career year for most guys is just another season for Albert. I would suggest that in the Jones vs Pujols battle that Pujols has better stats in nearly everything except home runs and RBI's, that includes runs scored and slugging percentage and a far superior batting average and on base percentage.

As for Carp, I thought he had it sown up but the last 3 starts have been pretty poor. Had he kept his sheer brilliance going I think he would have won Cy Young hands down, but the last 3 starts might just swing it for the Rocket.

Don't forget to add that Andruw Jones is also better in fielding/outfield assists category - a strong Gold Glove candidate

Nice link. Gotta corect you, however, his name is spelled Andruw Jones

As for playoff hunt, everything seems to be about finalized, with exceptions of AL East/AL Wildcard races. Seems like Cleveland is going to be in it, one way or another (the playoffs)

and it looks chicago white sox bats are waking up a bit.
i predict the white sox will get the final wild card spot.
and the loser of the boston-new york brawl for 1st will be out of the playoffs ..

friday before the white sox game i made a bet with my buddy for $50 that the white sox would make the playoffs. after the bet he started talking shit, "the sox are going to get swept by cleveland and they'll pass your white sox." my response, "you dont have to win the division to go to the playoffs ." he tried weasling his way out of the bet but there were too many people that heard it.

with the current trend in baseball you're almost better off being the wild card team than the divisional winner.

So what are everyones playoff picks with one week to go:
Mine are:

AL East: Boston
AL Central: Chicago
AL West: LA
Wild Card: Cleveland

NL East: Atlanta...easy
NL Central: St Louis...really easy
NL West: SD...under .500
Wild card: Philly

haha that's pretty funny.

Well the Nationals are officially out of playoff contention, but they had a great inaguaral season, and no one really predicted their year to be this successful. Still I had a great spring and summer cheering them on.

Now on to my Playoff picks:
AL East: Sox
AL Central: Sox
AL West: Angels
Wild Card: Yanks

NL East: Braves
NL Central: Cards
NL West: Padres
Wild card: Astros

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Sep-28-2005 08:07:

Wow, even though I'm stressing over the Yanks and making my condition a hell of alot worse than it usually is, this has to be one of the closest playoff races I can remember. The AL is just so jammed...a team with 95 or 96 wins might not even make the post season! Insanity.

5 games to go.

Anybody change their predictions? My ideal scenario would be for either the White Sox or Indians to tank badly and one miss the WC leaving it and the East to the Yanks and Red Sox. Or, the Bosox start playing like beer leaguers and miss the playoffs, but I have a feeling that isn't going to happen.

Man, I am so pissed off I couldn't watch the Braves vs. Rockies NL East clinching game yesterday on TV. I wanted to videotape the moment. Because you may never know if they extend the streak. Oh well, but I am going to get really drunk and partyin' this weekend anyway!!!

As for ...
AL East is going to be an exciting race that will come down to a big 3 game series in Fenway against the Yankees. I might watch a game or two

Posted by Magnetonium on Sep-29-2005 02:33:

Friggin Blue Jays picked the wrong team to play a spoiler on ... Sigh

I guess the Red Sox will MUST win 2 of 3 at Fenway. I'll have the playoff pool ready by late Sunday the October 2nd (if Red Sox manage to tie the Yankees in standings).

So be sure to keep an eye on this thread if you want to participate in the TA 2005 MLB PLayoff Pool. Winner (if it not me), gets a choice of a CD copy/rip (over 640 to choose from - see my Sig) or a choice of a liveset (over 1100 to choose from - ask for list) from my collection. Free shipping. Plus bragging rights as the defending "TA Baseball Cup" champion (can anyone can come up with a better name?) for all next year

Posted by jonze on Sep-29-2005 03:24:

white sox got a big win in the thick of things. but then again, it shouldnt be this close consider the huge lead they had.

the red sox are still tied with the indians for the wild card so you never know whats going to happen. and the yanks are only a game up. it still looks like four teams going after three playoff spots with the yanks and white sox having a leg up on the competition.

i was watching espn last night and they were going over the AL playoff race and when they got to the white sox they had a quote by ozzie guillen. but espn has wised up and instead of actually showing the clip (which no one can understand what the guy's saying) they just put a picture of guillen on the screen and then text of what he said while the anchor read it.

for the record im rooting for cleveland to win the wild card and i still think the red sox can pull out the division in boston over the weekend.

Posted by Member of X on Sep-29-2005 16:19:

Boston will be losing this weekend but I think they'll get the wild card, not the Indians.
