I usually buy European books from Blackwell because of their rewards programme (I got the card when I travelled to London earlier this year), but this website look even better.

Interesting, thanks

Another vote to keep the beard, Lira.

Hehe, I'm sold - I'm definitely keeping the beard after the skin treatment

Must be a come down writing the next book after publishing "The Meaning to Life".

Actually, it's a marvellous book and I'd eagerly read any future works, despite the fact that I'm a bit annoyed by his staunch atheism even though I'm an atheist myself. The following book had the same effect, and it was written by an atheist with a strong Buddhist inclination (so my disagreement is quite unexpected, I guess):

I haven't read Susan Wolf's "Meaning in Life", but it doesn't look like something I'd appreciate. The best book ever on this topic is actually this one:

Contains arguments by theists, arguments by atheists contradicting the theists and (my favourite), arguments by sceptics saying everyone else is wrong, atheists included.

If only we had cute profs like that at my school
I go to a French campus so they're all tacky or gay. Or both.

Lira, the beard doesn't look lazy so high five.

Blast your skin and grow it back!

Its more common than you think. This is why its a bad idea to be friends or date someone with beliefs too close to your own. Whats more annoying than hearing your own thoughts out loud? You realize your ideas aren't that original and what are you going to talk about when you agree on everything?

Looks like "PONWA" to me. Which, as you know, is one of 32 Canadian words for "Hello there, friend!"

my take on the whole situation:

Actually, I disagree with the authors, I don't think they express my opinion

Anyway, less talks, more pics:

You are the strangest atheist I've ever met.

And I agree that Thagard's book is very good.

He is the agnostic atheist, believing in the possibility there is no God but holding onto that shred of doubt that there actually is. He quietly shuns their hermetic insistence, leaving open that inescapable gap that perhaps his beliefs are set upon dubious stonework.

I know, I'm often at odds both with theists and atheists... and I'm not even agnostic

Not really. I find it very unlikely that there's anything remotely similar to our concept of God (which doesn't make me an agnostic, I'm hardly "in doubt" or thinking that this is an answer we can't ever have) and even if there were, I don't think we should even care (reason why I'm quite comfortable saying I'm an atheist rather than an agnostic).

Now, the reason why I disagree with most atheists is because I loathe normativity more than I disbelieve in God - I couldn't care less if there are religious people in the world. The moment Thagard says you shouldn't base the meaning your life in religion, I'm almost tempted to say "Oh, yeah? Watch me!". But then again, in order to do it I'd have to give in and adapt to the normative rules of any religious system - which takes me back to my original position

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-25-2010 19:07:

So... you're agnostic, then?

No, I'm atheist who doesn't care about theists.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-25-2010 19:17:

Well I don't believe in atheists because there's simply no evidence of their existing apart from people's wild and delusional claims. So you're agnostic.

So you actually dislike conformity <--- granted an over-simplification of the nuance inherent to your position.

Yet you conflate your thinking with this non-conformist attitude, thereby conforming to a strict adherence of your own making!

This existential paradox will soon implode and it WILL END VERY POORLY FOR YOU!!!

You have been warned.

I don't believe in agnostics because there just isn't any evidence that you can live without any belief, positive or negative.

So I'm a diagnostic.

...

I'll get my coat
