pretty much everything jenny mentioned i do and it works well. like others mentioned watch your form, i know the trainer is supposed to do that but i've seen too many trainers not address some issues.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Sep-09-2010 19:20:

I used to laugh at some of the trainers at my old gym, and think what a waste of money on behalf of the people paying for their advice.

Posted by chimera66 on Sep-09-2010 19:36:

some are a total waste of time for sure. at my current gym there are two older pudgy trainers that i wouldn't trust to do anything but take my money. none of their clients look good either so that says something.

Posted by Excess on Sep-09-2010 19:45:

to be fair i know a ton of those clients refuse to actually listen to their trainers, and i'm sure they eventually give up and let the clients run their own workouts out of frustration. the majority of gym-goers don't want to do the work to get results, they just want the satisfaction of being able to say they go to a gym, and work out. even if that means all they want to do is crunches to get that six pack.

if they only knew the best ab workout comes from doing core exercises like squats, deadlifts, even pullups.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Sep-09-2010 19:51:

Yeah but when a trainer is fatter than you are, you should be smart enough to question their competency.

a big part of their job is to motivate, if i were a trainer and this kept happening that shows there is something wrong with me too. trainters should be able to "trick" their clients into working out.

best part is that crunches will never get you six pack abs. And I dunno about deadlifts, squats, etc building a stronger core. If anything you should do core-centric exercises along with those so that your body can keep up with the heavier weights. I'm not saying those exercises don't work the core, but imo they're not enough. I usually do either planks, leg raises or bicycles at the end of each workout just to strengthen the core up even more.

all will tell you, squats squats and more squats. w/ proper form of course. my girlfriend makes fun of me all the time because since she's met me my ass got bigger from actually training legs.

form is everything though, have your trainer fix your form for squats/deadlifts before anything.

can't stress this enough. you could really injure yourself if you don't do deadlifts properly. definitely get a trainers advice on the form and then go from there yourself.

my 2 favourite exercises right now are the deadlift and overhead press for working the shoulders.

Posted by Excess on Sep-09-2010 23:39:

if i can find the article i'll post it up, it measured the amount of work put in by your abs during those exercises versus other 'ab' workouts. using a belt during squats/deadlifts also engaged the core even more. though leg raises were also up there. and bicycles are proven as another great core workout so i won't deny the usefulness of those exercises

Posted by Fledz on Sep-10-2010 00:19:

Ania - Work on your core, do static exercises.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-10-2010 01:20:

Man, I need to invest in some running shoes. The trainers I go out in now are literally falling apart and are starting to become an injury liability.

Posted by chimera66 on Sep-29-2010 18:14:

there is a guy at my gym who is definitely mid-50s, wears barely there loose string tank tops, falls asleep in the tanning bed and is without a doubt a gigantic meathead. is that strange to anyone else, i didn't know meatheads could be that old.

so how goes everyone's quest to be awesome? i'm sad it's getting cooler outside because my walks to/from the gym aren't as nice as they once were which means i'm going to have to start doing cardio inside again.

Posted by Excess on Sep-30-2010 04:45:

doing well! it's not summer anymore so that means no more cutting. eating what i want ftw! well, at least to some extent.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Sep-30-2010 04:52:

Pretty good, actually. I've finally got back into a steady every other day routine which I'm happy about. Haven't done cardio since ummmm June though. I know it'd be just the thing to burn the fat I'm not pleased with, but eh - nobody's perfect.

Having good speakers in our "gym" makes all the difference. I get pumped thinking about having awesome tunes to keep me going.

Now that's it's cooler out I should definitely start running again though.

There is a class at my gym in an hour called "Interval and Sculpt"

I want to go, but I have no idea what it consists of... any ideas?

I called the gym and the moron at the reception desk had no idea.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-30-2010 13:34:

Had some real struggles with the running recently, only been managing to go out twice a week at most. The dark nights and bad weather don't give you much window of opportunity Still, ran for 9 miles yesterday so I haven't lost any fitness.

The weights are going great, though. Making some real progress on the bench-press.

Interval Sculpt

A Class that all students should take. This class concentrates on resistance moves that help support joints and bones, along with all intense cardio moves to work your heart. This class has 3 min. resistance moves followed up with 1 ½ min cardio moves. The resistance is in the form of weights, tubing, etc. to help build strong healthy lean muscle tissue. All Levels

probably not the exact same but similar.

Posted by Ania_xox on Sep-30-2010 19:59:

It was weights combined with cardio. Sick workout... I was BEAT.

The instructor was fucking INTENSE. I don't know if this is standard in these kinds of classes, but at one point we were doing deeeeeeeep squats with weights in hand and holding the position for like 30 seconds. My ass was crying

If I stopped to chill my limbs for one second he yelled "MOVE IT, LEGS. I DIDN'T SAY BREAK"

lol

Will def be going again

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Sep-30-2010 20:07:

i love all these new names to keep it fresh lol p90x is the best one lmao

interval sculpt lol...damn I should really go into PT and start flipping these terms to get people to sign up for classes.

And here we have muscle confusion...what does it mean?, i don't know but it's pretty fucking confusing huh?

You have to have a certain charisma and likability factor to teach a class.

Else no one will come

if no one comes you're not teaching

I never went to classes at the gym...but I always wanted to go to a spin class. Never worked with my schedule though.

Posted by nrjizer on Oct-01-2010 12:19:

Lately I've been rowing for cardio--30 minutes at roughly a 2:15 pace (per 500m), 4 times per week (with a nice 4 mile run thrown in on the weekends for good measure). Been staying on the weights consistently too. I'm definitely in the best shape I've ever been in, though I do feel like I could go a bit further if I pushed harder. With my school schedule being what it is, though, I think I've come to a decent equilibrium point. My appetite has been insane lately, it's been hard not to completely gorge out sometimes.

I should be working out right now, but instead I'm studying for a test this afternoon

Posted by Silky Johnson on Oct-01-2010 12:56:

Ah man, I miss rowing, too. I should ask for a rowing machine for xmas.

i know the feeling. ever since i stopped 'cutting', i'm never satisfied. not that i was before, but i suppose the idea that i was dieting helped conceal my hunger lol. my appetite is through the roof. as if my body is recovering from all the time spent dieting lol.

but with eating more, my workouts have been a ton more intense. finally going up in weight with exercises i've plateaued at. feels good man

So as you all know in the last year i blew out my knee 10x worse then most people. I have under gone 3 surgeries 2 of them being reconstruction of ligaments. Ive been rehabbing like crazy in the gymn everyday. In that time I have gone up 30 pounds from my weight before the accident. I have not been able to do any cardio whatsoever. Spent months not being able to walk lying on a couch. Anyways in the last two months Ive been able to hit the gymn and lift weights. And I have been going hard. Not being able to do any cardio really bulked me up alot. I definitely dont have a soccer players physique anymore.

I am starting to feel alot better. My knee is still nowhere close to return to sports but I have been able to cycle and use the elipitical. I started attending spinning classes and though my knee wont allow me to keep up with even the fattest guy in the class, I feel I am improving. I am hoping to be able to start being a lil more athletic by christmas and hoping to return to sports by the end of next summer. That is my goal.

I am hoping by christmas I will be able to do more cardio and maybe try to do the P90x program or Insanity to shed the fat that I have gained with my immobility. If I am good to do this by christmas I will start posting results on here to keep me motivated. as of right now I will show you a pic of how big I have become (note how wide my hips and stomach have become and how much bulkier I look). So hopefulyl by christmas I can maintain this without gaining anymore fat %. Hopefully my limited biking and elipitical work outs will keep me at this size. I will keep bulking up with weights so when xmas comes I can lose the fat and keep the built.

I will update this monthly to show you results until march when I should be done all my cutting. Hopefully by March I want to be back down to 185-190lbs (my original weight) as of right now im walking around at 215 lbs

** I have to say though girls are loving the bulkier me. but after I eat or drink alot i do get the bloated belly, and the remarks that come with it
