Cheers for the exercises. They sound good for strength, but probably not for muscle growth.

True. Do you have a weight belt? A very simple thing is to tie a weight to your ankles, sit on a chair and then repeatedly lift your legs up and down, going from parallel with the chair legs to parallel with the ground. Pretty crude, but it works.

They're cheap enough for me to invest in one, but I'm having trouble actually finding one online. "Weight belt" just turns up those back-support belts that power lifters use.

Search "dip belt" and "ankle cuff strap workout". You'll find some.

Also, that exercise is just for your quads. If you want to work out all the major muscle groups in your legs:

1. Lie on your stomach on a bench with your belt line on the edge. Again with the weight on your ankle, bring your heels slowly up and down to your bottom. That will work your hamstrings.

2. Calves are a trickier one, but I suppose you could hold some heavy barbells down at your sides while doing calf raises, to simulate the machine at the gym which presses the weight down on your shoulders. I used to do unweighted calf raises in sets of 50, one leg at a time. Personally, I don't think weights are as crucial for building muscle with this exercise; you might be okay without.

Quick update. still not running but....got my lunges onto the half ball without any pain (big improvement). my patella has loosened up a bit. got my VMO's firing again but my VL's are having trouble firing (not so good) physiotherapist doesnt seem confident in me returning to sports before summer.

Just did my first run after about 5 years. 3km with a nice combination of uphill and downhill. Had to stop halfway to stretch my calves for 30sec to make sure I don't tear anything, but other than that it was a pretty smooth way to ease back into it.

Might be starting P90X today. Any yea/naysayers?

Posted by Lira on Dec-15-2010 06:11:

Might be starting on caffeine-based thermogenics tomorrow. Thoughts?

Posted by Fledz on Dec-15-2010 06:19:

Elaborate.

My jiu-jutsu teacher suggested the program to me. It seems like a good deal so far.

Remember that last picture I posted? Well, I had to stop going to the gym during the last couple of months and fed on a steady diet of pizza (which I craved) and coca-cola (for the caffeine). And I'm tired because I completely broke my body clock (it's 4:30 AM here now and I'm wide awake, whereas I'm completely useless during the day). So I thought raising my metabolism with thermogenics would be a good idea because it'll keep me awake during the day (and hopefully, I'll be well knackered at night) and, along with aerobic exercises, it can help me lose the five kilos I gained.

The thermogenicthingmybob I want to take is pretty much just a caffeine bomb, as far as I'm aware of. No ephedrine.

I've always been a very light person so my legs have never had to carry much weight. As a result they're naturally thin and naturally weak. I'd like them to look bigger, but I also want to keep (and add to) the strength they've gained this summer, for when I resume running next spring.

there's no way you could do squats? cause that's honestly the best leg/full body exercise. especially "Low-Bar Squats"...I recently switched my squat technique to that (from olympic squats) and it's much more effective at hitting not only the legs, but the upper body too.

Oh and to the guys starting P90X: I tried it for 2 weeks and it definitely kicks your ass, but I will say that it all depends on where you're at right now, whether it's the right routine for you or not. If you're looking to add size and or strength, it's not the way to go. If, on the other hand, you're trying to stop being fat, then go for it, especially if you come from an athletic background.

Posted by Fledz on Dec-15-2010 06:35:

It's the sugar that's ruined you, not the caffeine. Caffeine boosts your metabolism where as the sugar gives you an insulin spike which makes you retain more fat. It's the coke that's killing you.

Just ease back into it with some light cardio and fix your diet up. The rest should come naturally, especially your energy levels.

Yup. I can't remember the exact number but your body digests something like 20mg of sugar every 3-4 days. 1 can of coke has about 46mg of sugar, so yea, (@Lira) definitely cut the sugar intake and you'll notice a difference. Switch to water, (water w/ a slice of lemon if you wanna change it up), coffee with little to no sugar, etc. Give it 2 weeks and you'll feel like a different person. I can tell you this from personal experience. Oh and this also goes for all those juices they sell too. It's all evil lol

Posted by Lira on Dec-15-2010 06:39:

Yeah, I'm already starting to do it. I've already indulged myself enough

So, wait, what would happen if I took the thermogenics then?

Posted by Fledz on Dec-15-2010 07:16:

That's the fat loss pill yea? AVOID!
You'll just put the weight back on and more later on.

If you're having sugar, have it in the morning and try and avoid it after lunch.

How about right after lunch? Is it bad?

I like to have some coffee when I get in my office to study, and I like my sugar with coffee and milk

Definitely not possible. On top of everything else, my gym is in my basement which has a very low (about 7') ceiling.

Well it's not going to kill you, but at least in the morning you have more time to burn any excess energy. One or two sugars doesn't hurt, though it's ideal if you can wean yourself off it.

Vegetables and fruit taste SOOOOO much better when you limit your sugar intake.
