in today's game, the defense didn't help out when the pitchers actually made good pitches

the Yanks were beating Schilling, but Moose gave the lead right back twice

Wow I got all excited when jorge hit that homer....... too excited too soon!!

as soon as the ball gets handed to proctor or myers,,i feel like crying.....

awesome game...Go AROD. Mariano finally holding it down.

great game from start to finish no matter who you were rooting for. I have 3 thoughts:

1. Arod's home run was nuts - how someone takes an 0-2 fastball on the outer part of the plate and drives it out is beyond me. I'm still surprised Pap didn't throw his splitter up 0-2, usually his strikeout pitch in that situation.

2. Abreu is playing terrible. He's looking better at the plate I guess but he simply looks lost in right field.

3. I'm surprised the Sox offense has been so effective when you consider how ineffective Manny & Ortiz have been of late. I give a lot of credit to Theo and Tito sticking with Pedroia - for a little guy he really knows how to handle a high fastball and isn't bad defensively at all and Youk is absolutely crushing the ball.

agreed with all your thoughts, except i would add that Abreu, Damon, Cabrera, and Cano are(were) all playing like shit. I think cano and cabrera are coming out of the slumps, but im not sold on abreu just yet. I'm def. pissed about Damon in general. He was a horrible pick up. If we were going to spend that much on him we should have just went for beltran when he was available.

Pedroia is looking like a rookie of the year candidate. Damn, there's no way rookie of the year isn't coming from boston with Pedroia, Okajima, and Matsuzaka. My money's with okajima or pedroia, if either can keep that up.

I'm happy we finally broke papelbon. I think that's the first run for the yankees off of papelbon, ever!!

Youk is nuts right now, but wasn't he hot at the beginning of last year and then dropped off? There's something about that guy that i just don't like. He just seems like a douche bag. But whatever, he's playing well and that's all that matters.

EDIT: just checked youks stats from last year, he had a .333 avg in may 2006, .309 in june 2006, then .236 in july 2006, .274 in aug 2006, and .216 in sept 2006.

what a disappointment Lugo and Drew have been! I knew Drew was going to suck. i said that on page 8 of this thread.

Great game,,needless to say me and the wife were arguing all the way through it..When the Red Sox are beating us she's so fucking sympathetic towards me but when we're beating them she hates me with a passion...

For youk it's important to keep in mind that it was his first full year in the bigs combined with having both Manny & Ortiz out of the lineup towards the end of the summer. Youk was hitting cleanup and wasn't seeing nearly as many fastballs. On an aside, I've been extremely impressed with his defense considering he came up as a 3rd baseman.

Yeah, I'm disappointed in Drew as well. It's not cataclysmic, just annoying. Lugo, on the other hand, I'm not as concerned about. I think he'll heat up and he's on pace to become only the second Red Sox player to steal 50 or more bases. That said, don't be surprised if Tito puts him at the bottom of the order with Crisp, moves pedroia to the leadoff spot and Youk back to hitting second.

What are you talking about jerZ,,unless I'm getting excited prematurely..We are fucking crap but we're winning and slowly but surely closing the gap...Our bats are quiet,,we can't field and our pitching is awful..I think this is gonna be our year...

However if we lose tonight I will delete this post tomorrow,,so please don't anyone quote me....My wife (red sox) hates me even more today than she did yesterday so it's all good...

this is the quote of the thread...

^^ I'm not gonna quote you steven.

FIrst, my last post was right after the loss to chicago on monday and was in direct reference to how we hit against boston, and couldn't hit against the white sox. However, last night all the bats came out. Maybe this is a turning point since Cano's BA is almost up to .280, abreu is 9 for his last 17 (or something like that), Damon is finally hitting, and matsui is also hitting. Seems like arod is about to get hot again, and posada is his usual hot self. Who knows.

i think it may be a little premature to say it's our year because an 11.5 game lead is alot to overcome, although not impossible. We still need to fix the pitching before we can overtake the sox. I think we're only 6.5 out of the wildcard, so it's definitely not over. But even if we make the playoffs we will get nowhere without some solid pitching from the bullpen.

jerZ i think ur wrong especially when we have gained two games on the red fux in three days and they have played a game more than us....
maybe you have forgot how far they were ahead of us last season before imploding and being beat into third place by the jays...

There's a saying in baseball - every team's going to win 54 games, every team's going to lose 54 games - it's what you do with the other 54 games that count. You guys have lost 31 out of the 54 you're "supposed" to lose - for the Yanks to win the division it would take an unprecedented second half of the season as well as a Sox meltdown. I'm not saying it's not going to happen, just that I'd be more focused on getting the wild card spot, which is legitimate considering all the AL Central teams are just going to beat up on each other (exempting the royals, of course).

Posted by steven-neil on Jun-07-2007 01:21:

focussing on the wild card is what Boston and Toronto need to be focussed on not the Yankees...My wife is a die hard Red Sox fan and even she cringes when hearing the kinds of comments you are making.....

my honest opinion is is that Boston have a good chance of finishing second.....not a brilliant chance but a good chance....

i could very well be wrong, and i hope i am. Its just that the yankees have a very difficult task to over take the sox. Here's a little example to show my point:

A normal division leader wins about 95-100 games. Using 97 wins (yankees total last year) as the benchmark, the yankees need to have a .679 winning percentage (72 wins and 34 losses) from this point on, and boston needs only a .571 winning percentage (60 wins and 45 losses). While it is possible for the yankees to do so, its not very probable. In order to overcome the sox, the yankees need the sox to have some sort of meltdown. Basically, we need the sox to win around 90 games in order for us to probably win first place. If boston wins 97 games there is little chance the yankees will win first. The best bet of this happening is boston losing some pitching.

With that said, boston hasn't really had a major slump yet, so they may fall into one soon.

I'm not trying to throw stats at you, i'm just trying to stay grounded. I'm definitely with you....we've looked good since the beginning of the boston series. hopefully it continues.

Apparently abreu, damon, and cano are coming out of their slumps, and arod is starting to heat up again. It is definitely looking up, and if wang and pettitte continue to bring it, clippard and mussina can at least hold it down, and hughes can come back and look dominant like in his last game, we may have something going forward. I'm feeling much better about the yankees this week than last.

jerZ,,i've learned more about this game from you than anyone else but i'm just trying to look on the bright side.....my wife is sat in my bar bitching about the Red Sox and i'm sat next to her in my pinstripes laughing my cock off....

thanks man....

and i wasn't trying to bring you down. i can definitely appreciate the positivity.....i must admit, i was getting down on the yanks the last few weeks. we looked like shit....the spirit is coming back after the last four wins. I'm finally getting back into it. those 14 or so losses in 19 games was a killer. I can't remember a stretch like that since the mid 90's.

i love it when sox, and now mets fans are down on their teams. it's for no other reason than they love seeing the yankees lose.

btw...the name is james
