get out!

Best/most hopeful thing ive seen on the news so far was a New York woman who said - "Im never happy when another person dies - im not going to lie i dont feel bad about it - but im not celebrating his death either - and he was my brothers killer"

But yeah, from my vantage point some of the celebrations look exaclty fundamentalists in the middle east - and i guess they are they are the same except they be fundamentalists in the west.

meh fkn religon.

Except we didn't kill Osama and then publicly drag his corpse around through the streets whilst praising god that he's dead. I agree that there shouldn't be a huge celebration over somebody's death, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't glad he's dead. The world is a better place without him in it.

You're making an incredibly broad generalization about the public school system in America. There are tons of very good public schools. The vast majority of undergrads at top colleges in the US graduated from public schools.

There are many barbaric examples of what you're talking about, but the dragging of the corpses through the streets, the display on the bridge that you keep talking about - these are things that happened in Fallujah, where Blackwater contractors got their shit pushed in because they were firing on unarmed civilians.

It was not a good situation, but not so seemingly black and white.

Posted by srussell0018 on May-04-2011 15:30:

Right, but as you said, that is most certainly not the only example of atrocities committed by terrorists on American soldiers/civilians. Does anybody remember the very public video of Daniel Pearl being beheaded by his captors? I don't know how anyone could possibly feel any remorse for the way that this operation was carried out. Do you think that if al-Qaeda somehow managed to assassinate Obama, that they'd clean his body and give him a proper burial, whether it be at sea or otherwise?

I think the numbers speak for themselves regarding the staggering amount of money we spend on public education and the shitty return on that investment. Look at graduation rates and standardized test scores by state, and look at our performance vs. other countries. But boy do our students have great self esteem numbers! Of course we have good schools and teachers. But we have a LOT of garbage too, and it's systemic.

Appeasing sensitivities vs. transparency? It's not like the fantatics are going to hate us any more than they already do. The White House needs to get organized over there. Yesterday it was "we're definitely releasing photos", and today it's "no". Bin Laden was armed, then he wasn't. He uses his wife as a human shield, then he didn't. They shot her in the head, then it was "we shot her in the leg when she ran at the SEALS". We were in a firefight, then a Pakistan official says today there were no shots fired. WTF. Get your messaging shit together!

I think the fact that the Taliban are demanding the US produce the photo is the best argument as to why they shouldn't

lol... this is going to turn into the Elvis situation of the muslim world. The believers are just gonna keep on believing he's alive no matter what; nevermind the fact that his own daughter is talking about how he was killed.

Wow, Anti-Americanists in Brazil have the nerve to argue against Bin Laden's assassination! Sure, it would've been better to just arrest the guy but, I mean, really!? Side with Osama on this one!?

Actually, it's much more complicated than this: It's a "us vs them" issue, in which they see the US as a holier-than-thou domineering power that wants to push values unto us that are alien to our culture and that Americans themselves can't follow. On the one hand, it's nice to criticise ideas whatever their origins are. However, I feel that most of the time it's just our own nationalism rearing its ugly head.

That's really the crux of it - all of it - wouldn't you say?

I can't say I ever really liked Bin Laden but I always root for the underdog. Maybe I've seen to many Hollywood movies. His original motivations were stop the western powers from supporting middle eastern dictatorships. Obviously his means to an end weren't justified.
