^^^ I was playing with one of those about a month ago... slick little machine but I prefer one handed typing so I'll stick with the suretype models.

I've just noticed with Rogers, along with all those other changes that as of July 15th, 2008 they will no longer allow you to send txt msgs to the US for free included with your txt msg plan. They are going to charge 25 cents per txt sent and now have 4$ and 7$ plans for x amount of txts sent to the USA.

That is total BS. They already charge more per txt than any other company out there from what I have read up on.
I get charged 40 cents to sent international and when I am in the US I get charged 40 cents to txt back to a Canadian number.

I do have a BB and am looking for the best plans. Anyone else using someone other than Rogers for their BB and what are your plans like?

You can get an international texting plan, but that will kill your current plan. I've tried this already and they said if went with the shitty international plan I'd have to get rid of the unlimited plan I currently have as you can't have 2.

So stupid. Rogers really needs to wake up.

seriously?? again, total BS.
If Rogers doesn't want to work with people I may look at canning them altogether for my cable, internet and wireless. I have been a customer with them for 10 yrs and haven't had any complaints up until more recently.

(as far as I have seen though, they are still the best plan out there for BB which is unfortunate and why I asked who else has what for theirs)

I have Rogers for my Blackberry as I need it for international use outside of North America and Bell just doesn't have good enough phones or plans for that (plus I hate Bell less than I hate Rogers, imagine that).

That said, with my usage of one week in Miami this year with these exact charges you're talking about, I was up at almost $700 for one week because of international and roaming charges (most of that was txting, not calls).

Will be interesting to see if things will change, because we're getting raped as of late.

more on the spectrum auction.. i wish the Star would cite some of their sources sometimes. I'd really like to take a look at some of the independent studies on Canada's wireless market and its competitiveness against other industrialized nations.

Auction to lower cellphone prices, Prentice says
Bandwidth set aside for new mobile players in bid to increase competition

May 27, 2008
Julian Beltrame
THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA The federal government's spectrum auction is already having the desired impact of lowering prices in Canada's cellphone market, Industry Minister Jim Prentice said Tuesday on the first day of a weeks-long process that could introduce new competition.

The government is auctioning 105 megahertz of radio spectrum, which is used to carry the signals of cellphones.

The auction is expected to raise up to $1 billion for the government treasury and draw interest from the big three existing players in the market, Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX: RCI.B), BCE Inc. (TSX: BCE) and Telus Corp. (TSX: T)

But because 40 MHz has been set aside for new entrants, Prentice says he is hopeful it will increase competition in Canada and lead to lower prices.

"Certainly it will have the effect of introducing more competition to the Canadian market place, there's no doubt about that," said Prentice.

"There are those who would say even to this point it has started to exert downward pressure on prices."

Independent market reports have placed Canada's cellphone market as among the least competitive and most costly to users in the industrial world.

Prentice said 24 bidders are in the auction, which will be conducted electronically, with the anticipation there will be many rounds. The department will table the results of each round on its website.

But a final determination of winners and losers may not be known for a month, he said.

Following the close of the auction, winning bidders will be required to submit ownership and control documentation and to complete various payment transactions within 30 business days, Industry Canada said.

The department will then review the information submitted by each bidder and issue licences as appropriate.

HAPPY 75TH BIRTHDAY TED ROGERS!!!

PS. The Auction is suppose to last 3-5 weeks...so we'll have to wait a bit and see what happens then!

Here's a list of the qualified bidders:

Bell apparently has a new option that is available as of yesterday...some of the effects of the auction hopefully!

$30 Unlimited Data (Excludes BES) so long as you have a $30 Voice Plan.

Not to shabby at all...if you're on Bell...

Nope.

In the additional charges it says $15/mb when tethering...

Try not to get your $20,000 bill!

what's BES?

What is BIS?
BIS stands for BlackBerry Internet Service. It gives your BlackBerry access to the Internet. Its like an ISP, but for your smart-phone instead of your home computer. Every time your BlackBerry gets an email, or accesses a webpage, it does so through BIS (unless youre using BES)

What is BES?
BES stands for BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It gives your BlackBerry access to a corporate intranet. The intranet is the private, internal, network within a company. Its kind of like a mini-internet that is cut off from the rest of the world. Many intranets allow you to communicate with the Internet as well, but with added layers of security.

The Differences
Both BES and BIS allow your BlackBerry to get email, as well as retrieve webpages and use third-party applications (like WICKSoft Mobile Documents!). All traffic from your phone goes to the BES / BIS server, and then the BES / BIS server communicates with the world on your behalf.

The difference, ultimately, lies in where the server resides and the level of control and security you get.

What does the 30$ voice plan include Jeff?
I am paying 45$ right now for 150 weekday, unlimited eve/wknds and unlimited incoming with only 4MB data plan. Plus I have to pay the extra for txt/vm/etc.

It's not a specific plan, it just means that you have to have a voice plan of AT LEAST $30.00

This wouldn't work for me, because my plan is $17.50/ month for 200 daytime, unlimited weekend and evenings, and evenings starting at 6pm.

So if you wanted to add that on then it should be no problem since your plan is currently above $30, however, i believe that you can count the 4MB data plan as part of the $30/month for voice plan as they wouldn't consider it voice.

I am with Rogers right now, sorry Jeff I should have stated that
I am just looking at my other options out there which is why I asked everyone here. Rogers is changing things (txt msg'ing is specifically making me want to change over) and if I can get better deals with Bell, then I may take the plunge.

what your on is called the Voice and data Combo plan.......Most people just use simple voice plans like Uber Incoming plans or the other plans like familyshare if you have multiple members of the family........Regular plans are called Voice plans and the ones that people use for email and stuff like blackberry or other pda phones like HTC touch or other like Motorola Q are called voice and data plans.

Regular Voice Plans

Voice and data plans

As much as I hate to say it and I'm probably eating my words from somewhere along the line, I'm fed up with my HTC Touch. This GSM version has a processor that is just way way way too slow. The phone itself is great, but holy shit I can't stand these 2-3 second delays when I hit a button. 200MHz is NOT enough for this thing. I'd kill to have the PXA270 624MHz CPU from my old Axim in this thing.

I love it for its versatility and ability to do damn near everything, and to do those things better than the average phone.

I'm probably going to sell it with the Bluetooth GPS receiver I have and go back to my trusty Samsung D820 until I decide what to get next.

I remember back in Europe last year I said that the Touch would be my next phone. That, or the Samsung U600. I think I made a mistake here.

On another note, has anyone used a Nokia N81 or N82? How's the Symbian/S60/UIQ world these days?

Blackberry is launching a new flip phone.

So the BlackBerry Kickstart was only leaked a few days ago, but BGR got some more details on this flip BlackBerry. The Kickstart will be modeled the BlackBerry 9100 and feature OS 4.6 along with Wi-Fi and a next generation Suretype QWERTY keyboard.

Here's the full specs known for now:

* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
* "Next Gen" SureType keyboard
* 2.0 Megapixel camera
* 16-bit color LCDs
* Internal LCD is 240320, external one is 160128
* Wi-Fi b,g
* 3.5mm headset jack
* OS 4.6

According to reports the BlackBerry Kickstart 9100 will be launched in September on T-Mobile. Pricing won't be known for a while. As colors are important for RIM's marketing the Kickstart will be available in tons of different colors.

source

I think it looks alright. I really do like what I have now, but we'll see when it comes out cuz I have always loved a flip phone. Maybe this will be my change to Bell when it comes out

No idea what kind of phones bell offers.

But the other carriers don't have anything to compete with that.

Rogers just came out with their ultimate data plan.

$100CDN/Month for 1gb of data... WTF is that...

Christ I hate rogers sometimes...
