edit: @rose

Rose told me today that she couldn't do P90X yesterday because she was busy buying weed brownies. And here was me thinking she'd be busting her ass in Chest&Back and Plyometrics.

only losers that live at home buy weed brownies. spacecake= so easy to make and so much cheaper than ready to eat.

It's the P90BROWNIES workout.

Fixed.

Went for a run today, because it was a lovely evening. I'm fitter than I expected, given it's been a good six months since I was regularly running. I might be able to do that half marathon after all.

EDIT: Also, does anyone else have, um... digestive issues after they've gone for a run?

Posted by WittyHandle on Apr-19-2011 22:21:

I got the Men's Health app for Iphone, and it has tons of routines. I like it a lot overall, but I don't know if I should choose one routine (say Better Abs #1) and do it once a week, then repeat the same one the next week, or if I should do a different one to hit different areas of the same region (say Better Abs #2). Any thoughts?

By that do you mean running in more ways than one?

See this is why I can't watch those fat person shows where they feign commitment to making healthier choices....because they're always whining and shit about how fat they are and how hard working out and eating right is, meanwhile they've been lying the whole time about how much cake they've been eating, etc.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Apr-19-2011 22:26:

It doesn't sound like she was lying, though. She just honestly wanted to eat brownies rather than work out.

No, she told me on Sunday that she was starting the routine on Monday. She didn't follow through, and son I am disappoint.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Apr-19-2011 22:33:

I actually ate 3 delicious brownies tonight at work. However I'm not fat so I can gloat about it.

What are you eating before? Please don't say fruit.

Hahahaha, see? Fat people are forever "starting tomorrow".

i got chubby a while back, and honestly it is the easiest thing in the world to rectify.

no sympathy for the weak mouth breather posse here.

system: carb up, plain brown pasta butter garlic.

Shit, when I started it, I only did the first round of Chest & Back, and didn't even do Ab Ripper because I was so exhausted and ready to collapse that I stopped. I puked the next morning during Plyo. But I finished the workout, and didn't miss any workouts for the entire 3 months. I didn't make any excuses.

No fruit. Today it was an omelette and then a bowl of breakfast cereal. I always leave an hour after eating before running, and I always make sure I go to the toilet before setting off. I like to have something to eat about an hour or two before a run so I've got some energy to run with.

I've never actually been caught short while out running, but I usually need to go when I've got in. More important to me is that I often get stomach pains, like trapped wind, and these pains can seriously harm my performance. It's been a long time since I hit my limit in terms of cardiovascular fitness. These days a run always ends because I'm in too much pain, usually abdominal.

it could just be me, but eggs before exercise is nasty. They just sit in your stomach and make fart bubbles.

As Jay said, could be the eggs. Takes a decent chunk of time for protein to digest, eggs in particular. I was going to say ease off on the protein before and go with a higher ratio of carbs but I know you do distance running so you definitely need more fuel than that.

Either you need to eat at least 3-4 hours before if it's high in protein, or if that's not ideal (because you might be running in the morning), load up your cereal with WPI so it digests quickly, then hit up the protein solid foods (eggs, meat) after the run.

The wind is almost certainly linked to the eggs and possibly milk, but can't be sure until you cut them out and see how you go.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Apr-20-2011 11:21:

The eggs aren't my usual pre-workout meal. It's more likely to be the cereal and the milk, because I eat quite a lot of cereal. I'll try eating something different before a run next time, and see what the effects are.

The abdominal pains seem to be inevitable though, if I run for long enough I'll eventually be wracked with them. As I said, it's always the pain that defeats me.

Posted by Fledz on Apr-20-2011 13:13:

Are they muscular "holy crap I've done way too much exercise" pains or more internal "I probably shouldn't have eaten that" pains? I get pretty sore abs from a 3-4km run and I know for a fact you run much further than that. It's why it's such a good workout.

Might want to ease up a bit if it's really debilitating pain though.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Apr-20-2011 13:26:

The pains are multitudinous and varied, but usually inside the ribs. Sometimes I get nasty stitches, but generally it's a bloated feeling. I had a theory it was to do with gulping in too much air while running, and I've tried regulating my breathing before. But I've been reading that a lot of people get stomach cramps when running because they have a sudden need to have a shit.

Posted by Fledz on Apr-20-2011 13:30:

Wouldn't surprise me at all if in the end it was completely linked to food

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Apr-20-2011 13:36:

I never got cramps or pain really. Just a massive and pressing urge to crap.

I'm 90% sure it's the milk that's the problem. It took me a while to figure this out for myself. If I have anything more than about 50mL of milk within 3-4 hours of exercise, it's an instant stitch. While I'm not lactose intolerant in any sort of way (and I'm sure you're not either), I think it's quite a hard thing to digest.

I think that if you experiment, you'll also find that the amount you eat is quite important. When I used to run competitively, I'd eat precisely one and a half pieces of toast before races, because anything either side didn't work for me.

Just now, I took two weeks off running because I was going out too much and got sick. I've now lost what small fitness I'd gained. I'm entered in a half marathon in six weeks, and I can barely do ten kilometres comfortably.
