Ah, quite true.
NO ONE in Australia knows what trance is!!

any talent at all. He uses songs like

1) Silence (Tiesto remake)
2) Darude - Sandstorm
3) Castles in the Sky
4) Ascension (Thrillseekers remake)

And so on....As you can see he is trying to appeal to all those
damn teeny-boppers out there....I swear if MTV starts playing
trance I will kill myself....I know Im going to see a bunch of
little twelve year old girls at Best Buy buying this cd saying
how Ray Munn looks like the backstreet boys....That reminds isnt
Ray Munn a backdoor boy anyways????Oh by the way the transition between songs is absolute shyte!!!!AND TO TOP IT OFF, HE CONCLUDED
THE CD WITH ONE OF THE GREATEST TRANCE TUNES OF ALL TIME

Slyder - Score

Please someone shoot me!

Excuse me, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ASCENSION "SOMEONE" (THRILLSEEKERS REMIX)??? I love that tune! "Castles In The Sky" and OMG "Sandstorm" are both BAD though!

I find it saddening and even a little disturbing the attitude of some of the trance community. It seems that whenever certain productions get successful or a DJ gets big somewhere else, they get hassled for making the scene too commercialised. It appears there is a portion of those who listen to trance who would rather the music remain underground and in a niche instead of achieving wide acceptance. Do people feel threatened that "their" space is being invaded?

The trance "community" does not own the music that gets produced, if you don't like it, then don't listen to it. Everyone appreciates different types of trance, so to write off tracks as "cheese" or crap is unfair. MANY people enjoy that music. It reminds me of those people who say that all trance is crap, it's the same metality.

One of the things people have to accept, is that if trance had not effectively been commercialised, due to sponsorship of events, and clubs etc, the scene would not be so healthy now. Whether you like to accept it or not, the scene HAS to make money, and naturally artists want to spread their work as far as possible.

As for Paul Oakenfold (topic recently posted..) personally I dont like the guy. But I respect his work and what he has accomplished. The time to criticize those who work in the industry that makes the music we love, is the time we stand on an equal platform with them, by having released several albums and played numerous live sets. Until then, you have no idea what it takes to be a successful DJ and/or Artist.

Respect to those who love the music, create the music and take the music to the people. Without always looking for ways to expand and progress, trance will stagnate.

P.S Ferry Corsten kicks all those other DJs asses!

klawd, i disagree with you.
"The trance "community" does not own the music that gets produced, if you don't like it, then don't listen to it. Everyone appreciates different types of trance, so to write off tracks as "cheese" or crap is unfair. MANY people enjoy that music. It reminds me of those people who say that all trance is crap, it's the same metality"

i will write off the tracks i wish as cheese, regardless of whether or not people enjoy it. i enjoy some cheese. and others i do not.
its not trashing an entire genre, like "all of trance" but its criticizing individual productions and sets. some out there are just HORRIBLE.

but others can create excellent commercial trance (ferry corsten is a great example)
many produce annoying commercial trance (judge jules, pulsedriver, that scot project junk)

also you said "One of the things people have to accept, is that if trance had not effectively been commercialised, due to sponsorship of events, and clubs etc, the scene would not be so healthy now."

well john digweed is possibly the biggest underground dj of ALL TIME, and when he does play trance, its somethin else.

Posted by The Greek on Jun-01-2001 21:52:

if people start calling dj scot project commercial then whats stopping them from calling all trance commercial? where do we draw the line?

well its that voodoo & serano, warp brothers type of sound.
maybe its not the most commercial sound, but everyone knows it

i just happen not to like it

Posted by The Greek on Jun-01-2001 22:01:

i know what you mean i dont like voodoo and serano either and the only song by waro brothers i like is not even a song its a remix of the norman bass song how you like bass...but dj scot project like them two? they sound nothing alike to me because i hear quality with scot project but with the others i dont...i guess its just my opinion just like you got yours theres nothing wrong with having an opinion but i definitely think that scot project cannot even be compared to those other two you mentioned or their specific sound like the blade soundtrack...i am finished now

patticus i understand u bro dat ur a Diggers fan...im a fan of Diggers 2
but 1 thing...he isnt da biggest underground dj of ALL TIME...there r many underground dj's dat have been spinning 4 many years and havent even been seen or heard..Diggers just got out of da underground with his musik and dats his success...wat about Oakie and Sasha? They arent underground dj's? Oakie and Sasha have been in da underground seen 4 a long time as well

Posted by Phanta C 2001 on Jun-01-2001 22:04:

This Tread is stupid...to whoever started this(i forgot to look) but why put down someone that like trance...he probally liked trance way before he was an mtv VJ so he got a break one day and became a VJ...now he put out a trance cd...good for him! not that i WANT it to go mainstream but if 10% of trance songs go mainstream we will hear and people will produce man new trance tunes!

Posted by patticus on Jun-01-2001 23:14:

when i said biggest underground dj... i meant his style of music being underground and yet his name being big.
he's a huge name (like sasha) who hasn't taken his music to a commercial level.
sasha and digweed fall into this category, perhaps uniquely IMO.

oakie was underground in the mid 90's.. i would say he's definitely a lot more commercial now... spearheading the commercial trance scene along with ferry corsten and tiesto.. you cant really say he's underground anymore (but im not trashing him here)

Posted by DRM on Jun-01-2001 23:24:

I think some people me included are woried that if trance becomes commercial that it will be left by the big DJ's who dont want to be seen DJin stuff that is commercial and we will be left wiv unimaginative formulaic shit.

Posted by LiquidX on Jun-01-2001 23:30:

Well, to me paul Oakenfold is still underground, I mean, only the tru clubbers and hardcore ppls know him, go to your school and shout, who knows paul oakenfold ?!!?!? they'll wtf !!!buty after showing up at MTV, they may at least say.. that sounds familiar. I have to say that thanx to the commercialized trance, I got into the more underground, since I became a tru fan of it, but we all know that not all trance will be commercialized, we cant say that b/c a trance song became a radio played, be calling the WHOLE trance commercial, no , thats jsut bull, trance has become so big and so diverse that its branch are reaching everywhere, its now sharing so many different sounds, Progressive, Dream, dark, melodic, epic, uplifting, goa/ psychedelic, hard, clubtrance to even sharing some sounds with others genres ... there will always be underground trance, as well the commercial trance.. but hey, it seems that non of you would rather have a video music channel showing the latest trance songs videos, or a radio station playing the latest in trance for those fans out there... you have that all over the netherlands, there, you get some of the top DJ's doing live sets, in radios such as SLAM FM , or 538 FM, where you hear events such as Hyperstate, and trance energy, BCC 1 is another one in the UK.. I mean.. b/c of that trance is not underground anymore there?!!?!?!? theres still is!!!
I personally wish to see trance videos and a radio station playing My music .... but since some of you want it to stay underground, and still heaving that Hip Hop and all the other sh*t still playing on the biggest media we have, then we are gonna have to adjust to this system, and if you are like this, then Moving to UK, Germany , or Holland, than it would be the biggest nightmare for you once you see Sasha on TV spinning live on TV..... think about it.. is common sense!

Posted by patticus on Jun-01-2001 23:31:

what, you mean like the "10/10! must get!" stuff on websites that go
kick intro - 8 bars
synth intro - 8 bars
VERSE 1 - 16 bars
cheese chorus 1 - 8 Bars
bridge - 8 Bars
VERSE 2 - 16 bars
cheese chorus 2 - 8 Bars (2 phrases)
big, cheesey "emotional" BREAKDOWN - 16 Bars
etc ?

nah. NEVER happen.

its already happened, ravemonkey

Posted by bluE_Neon on Jun-01-2001 23:48:

Thumbs up

i think dat every dj has taken it 2 da commercial level even Diggers and Sasha...i mean come on they always spin @ Twilo, which is 1 of da biggest clubs in NA..Twilo is a like a commercial..i depends on da popularity rigth now and then...Oakenfold is definetaly da #1 dj dats been heard all around da world...Oakenfolds made some many tours..u know ur self...China, Argentina, Cuba....ppl heard trance there already but dat was just da being....and yez most ppl still dont know who Oakenfold is or Sasha or Diggers....talking about Tiesto? he's only popular in da Dutch land and UK i suppose as well...but here in Canada...i mean nobody didnt even hear of him...Tiesto, Oakenfold, Sasha, Diggers? Who da fuck is dat and so on? Even junglist, only know who Oakenfold is..da rest they dont know..and so on..Trance is da musik of Europe..yez its grown in da states but dats only in Florida...San Francisco, Los Angeles and NYC...only da big cities..so wat if Oakenfold and da others spinned at Las Vegas or ne city in TX? there still not knowed...i dont know if they will ever reach da top there...i mean 2 many ppl listen 2 Rap, Hip-Hop, Country, Pop and shit..

Posted by LiquidX on Jun-01-2001 23:59:

Well, I would include Las Vegas in big cities, I dunno how big trance there is, but theres an explosion of BIG clubs going over there, I mean, some even call it the american IBIZA, the same goes to MIAMI( closer to be called like that ) and well, Oaky spends looooots of time in Las Vegas, thats on of his favorite places, Oaky, wherever he goes, gets the place packed, in TX, where D:Fuse spinns, been with Oaky on the tour ( Making D:Fuse one of the future DJ's to look out for ) Oaky actually got the club packed to full capacity.

One Comment about oaky, did you guys know that He spunn at the grammys a trance set, been able to watch the artist dancing to trance , and heaving them coming to him asking to know what stuff and tunes he was playing ?!?!? as well.. he played in Salt Lake City Utah, watching as well Robert Redford dancing to trance...
thats something....

Posted by bluE_Neon on Jun-02-2001 00:11:

him didnt hear about dat Liquid X but dats safe 4 Oakie ...right there Oakie is proving 2 be da #1 popular DJ...companies involve him...hm American Ibiza ...but still da original Ibiza in Spain is da best

Posted by Izzy on Jun-02-2001 01:48:

True about oaky filling up texas dance floors. he's been here three times that i know of and he's basicly why everyone comes. oh ya and then theres D:Fuse, i gotta support my local star, this guy is talent. he plays very good progressive stuff and is very cool to watch especially when he gets the crowd moving by waving his cowboy hat (he wears it every show). I hope oaky can make him big

Posted by LiquidX on Jun-02-2001 02:22:

Talking

Well, Oaky has done alot for D:Fuse, he was last year at the WMC, been nothing, this yr, his gonne reaaaal far, releasing that Progressive CD , but I like his Psychotrance 2000 better :-)

And yes BLUE Neon, nothing will replace the true IBIZA, I'll be going there once I get my big bucks, another Island to watch for is mallorca, some big time techno partys there, well, thats where my germans friends go, and say that is better then IBIZA, I dunno about that.. they are neighbor islands... so who gives :-) I will try both !
