| Originally posted by DJ PO No, what makes the first three Gouryellas stand out is the very obvious Tiesto feel in the tracks, without it the tracks wouldn't be as legendary as they are today. They would just be another stale and fluffy Ferry Corsten production, like say, Ligaya. |
I agree with Pio.Trance as a genre was seriously decaying at the end of the 90s,with each release being less creative and more recycled trash than the other. Tijs realized this, and shifted his sound to a more experimental one, incorporating i.e prog and techno in his sets. Personally I don't think the techno he plays works that well, but the progressive edged trance sound Tijs has now is far more sophisticated and enjoyable for me than the overused and beaten-to-death epic trance horse that i.e. Ferry has flogged for almost his entire career.
Unfortunately, his success seems to have got somewhat to Tiesto's head, causing him to deliver uninspired and half assed performances when he can't be arsed(which the UK in particular has suffered from several times for instance). However, what never ceases to puzzle me is how quickly he can go from one miserable gig to mix a fantastic journey of a set on the radio a week or so after, complete with wicked tunes and solid mixing. I guess it all depends on what mood he is in,which is kind of snobbish and dumb, but I'll forgive him, since he really knows how to tug my heartstrings when he's on a roll.
I've always wondered though:does Tiesto hate the UK?Cos virtually all the shit gigs seem to end up there, where as in Holland or USA he gets rapturous responses every time he's over there playing.Perhaps he just doesn't like the UK anymore, and this is reflected in his sets over there?

). Not all of them are Tiesto haters though, I think a couple of them are even coming to Holland for the concert.

Hahaha. You thought the UK hated Tiesto? Check out the New Yorkers at www.arcspace.net. The mere mention of Tiesto will probably get you banned! LOL.

his schedule nowadays doesnt seem as hectic as it once was, which means more quality and consistency of tiesto sets |
Am I the only person who thinks that when he says "gay" he means "happy"? I thought he was using it as a term for the cheesey happy stereotyped trance, rather than the more darker experimental stuff.
That aside, he wasn't slating trance either. Everyone on these boards seem to rant on about awful "cheese" tracks. All Tiesto said was that producers are finding new way to diverge from this sound.
We also have to remember there is no proof that this was actually said
Yeah, i would like to see that interview as well. Probably never will, because i don't think it even excists.
hmm yeah....i have seen tiesto interviews where he says trance is evolving, but not a word about "gay" sounds......
can someone refer to the mag. that held the interview where he said something like that????

Where's the interview???? Cut and paste it...
it was mentioned on the djmag interview back in jan. or december.. a friend of mine had read it and quoted it on another board(www.arcspace.net)
it's so GAY when ppl misunderstand a quote.
i seem to be the only one who likes tiesto's new style more than his old style. even if his mixing skills ain't the best in the world.
but it does seems like he's moving slowly into becoming a pop star as a producer. doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be "another Oakie", at least till now the colaboration he did with a star (DJ Tiesto ft. Skin - Ten) sounded like a full-on trancer, instead of Oakie's awful MTV cheese. Seems like he's opening a door for *good trance* to be more mainstream.
Guys, he's NOT from the US, and spends little time here. The word gay may not have the same meaning to him, I doubt he was trying to be offensive. About the beatmatching ability - he's not the greatest beatmatcher but his skills aren't absolutely horrible or even mediocre, they're above average, adequate, and once in awhile phenomenal. Like someone else said, that's not the only thing that goes into being a great dj. The best example of this is Tiesto - Live @ Innercity, Amsterdam, the released cd. Even though it's old, his tracklisting is phenomenal, a masterpiece, and in my opinion his mixing on this album is flawless, especially for a live set. The world changes as do people, just embrace what he's doing, if it's not your style look elsewhere for it. I've loved about half the stuff he's released recently and had no interest in the other half. He's still a contributor none the less. Magik Journey, Suburban Train, have been great quality releases to the scene over the past couple of years, and I'm eagerly awaiting the Nyana release, can't wait to hear it. I really didn't even mind that he left Gouryella, Ligaya is still a great track. From the post about his recent DJ sets, I saw him a few months ago and I have to say it was mediocre, but I'm thinking twice about seeing him in NYC on the 16th as maybe he's starting to really get a hold of his new style... I think I'd start to get bored with a 6 hour set of all '98-'99 anthems anyway...

In my reply, I stated that his comments could have been taken out of context. Besides, the word 'gay' means happy and not the prejudiced term that so many American ppl like to use it for. So can you honestly say that he was saying that trance music is 'gay' in a derogatory way? ESPECIALLY considering that he is probably not keen on the derogatory ways the word 'gay' is used across America being that he is NOT American? I'm not so sure since I wasn't the one who said it, he was. Maybe he meant it that way, maybe he didn't. Only he would know. I think misinterpretation is one of the biggest things that can cause bad rumors. |

| the more I think about it, the more I think it IS being interpretted incorrectly. think about it... 'gay' = 'happy' Tiesto music throughout the years has become a lot darker. His music selection is definitely still epic trance with dashes of prog/tech but it has a more 'sad' and darker tone to it. So, being that his sound is more 'sad', he would definitely makes comments about Gouryella music being 'happy' a.k.a. 'gay' and therefore something he isn't interested in. Anyways, that's MY interpretation and i'm sticking to it! |
waaa waaaa somebody gets this baby a damn diper
i have never been on a music board that has had so many people bitching about so many artist
here is a bottle tell someone who cares about your complaining
Very interesting
Tiesto should join the WWF or whatever the hell the wrestling league is called in US now lolz.. What an act, i liked his prog tangents though, as for silence, i liked it for a while now i think its utter shit, now Delerium - Innocence (tiesto mix) theres a tune, not to mention billions of other mixes tiesto is a great remixer, and while he has done some stupid shit as you have typed out, if nyana is returning to 99 style thank god at least we get good choons from it lolz.
Hehe, my first post ever =)
Well, I really did want to find the original quote because it sounds like it could be important (wording).
From DJMag 4 Nov 02: "I'm not afraid to call myself trance," Tiesto told DJmag. "I consider myself an ambassador for trance, a DJ who proves that the music can still be innovative and uplifting without being cheesy."
Hopefully this might clear up some of the discussion. I personally love Tiesto. I was drawn into trance first from Judge Jules, but it's Tiesto's work that has helped me mature a little bit. I guess I am into the earlier style, Gouryella anthems, but I think it's great that he's experimenting and a good variety is what makes mature sets and an experience beyond words...
