Correct! However, what is know today as techno is NOT equivalent to what is today know as trance. Therein lies the confusion at the heart of this debate. it's like evolution.. just because chimpanzees and humans share a common ancestor, it does not mean humans are chimpanzees.... nor does it meant that they are unrelated.. get my point?

Those two quotes nailed it right on the head IMO. As to why somebody wants to spend so much energy on a debate like this, and carrying it on to different forums no less, is beyond me.

But Irish, how else would people know how cool and sophisticated someone is?

Posted by VaNFeCto on Jun-25-2003 21:17:

Damn and I thought I knew a lot about music.

Posted by noonboy on Jun-25-2003 21:29:

How about this????

-Electronica
+Trip Hop
+Ambient
-House
____-Dance
______-Hardcore
_______ -Eurodance
____________+Trance
____________+Techno

*puts flamesuit on*

either way i'm wrong, i am NOT saying techno is the father of trance....neither am i any good at genres so i know there must be something wrong there...

To 13am and other people that share his opinions on the matter, why does it matter so much to you how people generalise EDM? When I first started listening to EDM I called it all techno (well not all, I could see the difference in hip-hop & trip-hop for instance but I called all dance music, techno) Even though I was later informed that it wasn't all techno it took me another good amount of listening time to understand the difference between the genres, before I started thinking about the difference I listened to it for the music not knowing what genre it was, not even caring! Well, I had two categories: tunes that I liked and tunes that I didn't like, but when I started to actually feel the differnce between some tunes then I wanted to know more about the genres and I think that generalisation is more personal, I've seen people arguing about a genre of a tune when both persons are right in a way, its just your personal classification.
I don't know how you first experienced EDM but I don't think that you fully understood the difference between genres at first, hell, when I'm listening to progressive, trance or whatever and someone sais something like: "thats a great techno tune!" I nod because I don't want to be mr. know it all and also because that I realise that even though I tell the guy/girl the real genre name and that all dance music isn't techno he/she would not be able to understand the differences without a great effort of listening.

So in the future when new people come to this board, which is in many cases the next step from mainstream dance music we should welcome them and guide them through the community instead of laughing at their ignorance...

hope you're with me, I'm going to sleep now, took me way too much time writing that, kinda wish that english was my first language
laterz

You did a great job considering English isn't your first language.

isn't mauro considered tech-TRANCE?

Posted by sym on Jun-26-2003 04:25:

People who call all forms of electronica techno are a pet peeve of mine too. Calling it electronica is one thing, but techno and trance are two different genres and shouldn't be classified togethor. Than again, genre lines are becoming increasingly blurred with variations that share elements from two genres tech-trance? So who says where the line is drawn?

At least he used to but nowadays I'm not so sure. Take a look at his playlists and you'll see a lot of Chris Liebing, Umek, etc in there.

Posted by Kailya on Jun-27-2003 00:30:

I slowly explain to people that techno is just another type of Electronica music and that there are many different types of Electronica. Most are appreciative that I have informed them about the music they are speaking of.
