Usually the subject is dropped right then and there because they note i've seen through their thinly veiled smoke screen of knowledge. On ocassion people do ask what "real" techno is, mockingly of course, as if they knew the proper definition, and I explain (incorrectly perhaps) "it's higher-speed dance music that focuses/emphasizes (on) percussive sounds/loops more than the melody, generally."

I think people of my age group (high school kids), generally, tend to be very shallow in their musical tastes, and are taken aback by the fact I don't listen to "rap" (or, technically, the term they use now is "hip-hop" although all they listen to is "rap") or $current_hot_prog_pop_rock_band_of_this_quarter.

haha that is soo true. in fact thats exactly what i feel at my school and how the EXACT conversation goes. when i tell them, i doubt they would like real Techno, they just stare at me like i feeding them bullshit. Maybe i should make one CD of trance songs, one of techno and another of house and ask them to listen to it and then say, "you still think they sound the same....?"

Now the vocals. Hmm: fuck you ******, yeah, fuck you ******, yeah (repeat ad nauseum, i.e three seconds).

Now let's give it a stupid name everyone remembers:

50 pence- In the pub.

Done! Rap Number 1, in four easy steps.

dude, that crap is ultra-cheese commercial hip-hop. like 'our own' dj sammy/lasgo etc.. there is more complex underground hip-hop. i don't particularly listen to it, but if we don't want people to be mind-closed about our music, we shouldn't be mind-closed about their music.

and yep, 99% of people have an horrible taste in music, or are just very ignorant about it. people just listen to what is 'cool', so they can be normal like everyone else and be accepted in the society. There's also lots of people who don't particularly like music, and aren't willing to be educated on it.

everything in hip hop today is all hype and BS fed to a people who will never afford bling blings, chrome rims with a hot new ride and hot bitches who slut themselves out in videos. Trust me I know-hip hop stop representing the "hood" god I hate that term a long time ago. So everytime I hear a rapper say I represent the hood I just say to myself yeah right, more like the RIAA dumbo.

Posted by Strike on Sep-22-2003 22:06:

I remember telling my cousin I hate Eminem and she responded with
"Just because he made fun of techno!"
and it's odd because I don't even like techno.

My friends used to consider all electronic music techno, until I told them I listen to trance. But now that I'm into prog house, they think it's trance...lol

The only person I know into electronic music doesn't even know what he's talking about. He thinks pvd is prog for crying out loud...

I know there are a few TAs at my school but I don't know who they are, I just know they lurk in the T-Dot forums.

Posted by electric_soul on Sep-22-2003 22:58:

hmm

guess i'm lucky, i'm rather new into dance, and started to talk about it to my friends, 4 of us already agreed on a trance/vocal trance/chill out weekend with some of my records

On the other hand, we're all over 22 years old, we're not trendy kiddos anymore, and we're usually open to all kinds of music.

i'm assuming you mean the stuff that's on mtv and that sort of thing, because there's still plenty of stuff out there that isn't at all like that.

the genre's still got plenty of integrity.

Posted by NYCTrancefan on Sep-23-2003 00:25:

Oh absolutely, the MTV stuff leaves a lot to be desired, BET which some of my friends watch shows the same videos every hour on every show. What I am saying and this is more cultural is that hip-hop today projects a life that is unrealistic for most Americans and I don't find anything attractive or interesting in the lyrics. Like all music there are good and bad, in general though I would never purchase a rap CD. Not to support that filth that is fed to blacks and other groups of people as well. I guess you have to keep it all in perspective. Its just music. Too bad some clueless fool in the streets thinks he can live the life of Jay Z cmon. Rappers know it is hype, a lot of consumers don't know or care.

Posted by Pio on Sep-23-2003 00:36:

whatever, there are not many trance producers out there with even half of the talent of the Neptunes and such. i'm no hiphopper but i have to recognize their talent.

Posted by Evil_Gnome on Sep-23-2003 00:40:

Some rap is good, some is just terrible. I think it is so popular is bc people are not firmiliar with that lifestyle at all and it something new to them to hear about shootings and selling drugs. They are intrigued by it.

I am not aware of how many people on this board live in a working class black community, but if you did you would understand what I am saying. The majority are people who go about their lives on a daily basis and then there are a small number of others who think that television is reality in their actions. How many fake DMX or 50 is needed. I know there are EDM DJs that suck hence the term cheese and I wouldn't listen to most of their work as well and by the Way the Neptunes are smooth indeed no argument there, def. creative. That's the last on this topic for me. To each his own. Trance, Hip-Hop, Heavy Metal, Pop, whatever. Peace.

no prob. i'm puerto rican, i understand where you're coming from since our community goes through similar shit. anyways, hip hop can be amazing music of depth and innovation. it's also part of the great edm family. peace

There's commercial rap and commercial trance. You just have to search for the good stuff.

and who decides which is which?
There's music. the rest is subjective.

Posted by lizarazu on Sep-23-2003 05:27:

The only real sterotype that has been used towards me is the "kandy kid with glowsticks" one, and oddly enough,
the only person that does that to me also happens to like a little bit of trance, except for when we are with a group of friends, of course

I said "sure, right after this track" she smiled, said thank u and walked away and then I just kept spinning trance. No hip hop! LMAO

LOL...nice. Seems like the easiest way to get them out of your hair is to just say "yes" rather than trying to tell them why exactly they need to just go home.

Me: Yes techno

no point to explain to other people what the difference between trance and techno is anyways.

if you say you listen to 'progressive' people would be even more confused

Posted by TrAnCeAkI on Sep-26-2003 21:44:

of course there is gonna be stereotypes,we are all a wide variety of people thats why! there are so many different people who have one thing in common and its trance!! so many people on here do ecstacy and love trance then there are so many who dont do drugs and love trance!! Then there are some who wear 10 pounds of beads and others who wear jeans and a t-shirt...so you cant win :P did i make sense?!btw people i talk to think prog=trance techno=trance and goa=trance!!

Posted by torontotrance on Sep-26-2003 21:49:

frankly I don't care about stereotypes because most stereotypes in this world, are made by people who have no clue or refuse to actually learn about cultures or anything else.

People think, whoever listens to techno, trance and progressive does huge amounts of drugs....I don't....people think people like me...go to raves....never been to one in my life. Friends of mine, had these perceptions but I have shattered them. They used to think that people who went to clubs, could not fit it church, music, friends and family but I have...so I mean....if people want to be close minded and ignore you then move on because you don't need them. My own parents thought people in the club scene do drugs all the time, they have realized over the last few years and some people do but others just go to hang with friends and see deejays.

Posted by Rakoon on Sep-26-2003 23:05:

You guys are being hippocrites (sp?). Everybody thinks of trance as the stereotypes you all listed. What about rap? Everything you guys say about rap is stereotype. Thats hippocrisy (sp?).

In fact my friends and I listen to rap and when we discuss it, its a whole other thing. We critique the production of the track as well as analyze the lyrics. You guys gotta remember that the rap on the radio isnt the only rap thats out

Posted by torontotrance on Sep-26-2003 23:58:

but rap went to hell with the whole bling bling crap....even grandmaster flash and afrika bambaataa said that rap and hip hop have lost the plot and point.

Your right. But thats only the rap that the media promotes, ie radio & television. Just like how people are supposed to believe that (hypothetically) DJ Sammy and Darude are trance. That doesnt mean that theres still quality trance and rap out there.
