This was the best music I've heard at a party.. Armin for 4 hours! Finally got to see that gifted bastard...
Him coming on at 3 actually turned out to be a good thing, some of the people cleared out by the time he got into his set...
MO that guy can mix anything, from prog, house, trance song to song flowing perfect, so much talent...
Armin played alot of epics i have never heard before, I want this set on mp3! You gotta love the song splicing, yet another day with urban train kicked ass...
one of the highlights of the night: hearing the crowd sing ATRC louder than the system!

I started the weekend off with some trance on Thursday night in Ottawa. Had a few beers and heard some sick trance!
Friday night I had some more beers and took in Armin in Ottawa. Unreal set is the only way to describe it.

Then I went to Toronto and took in some more Armin. The first 2 or 3 hours of Armin's set in Toronto was decent. He played like 10 to 12 sick tracks, but too much non-trance tunes for me. Then we went down on the dance floor for the last 2.5 hours of his set and OMG OMG OMG! Ch00n after Ch00n! That last 2.5 hours blew his Ottawa set out of the water. By this time there was enough room to move around and the ch00ns were at their best. Unreal!! I couldn't stop moving!

If Armin was the precursor to what was to come the next night, I couldn't wait to see PVD the next night.

overall Unreal night

I need to end a debate.. were the go-go dancers guys or gals?

went to see both armin and pvd....amazing weekend....i have to say i enjoyed armin way more...more room to dance and i couldnt stop dancing the whole night...this is my second time seeing avb...his set was incredible..i also liked mark olivers set before avb...oliver had some really great tracks..and his style was somewhat different than usual ...a little harder and aggressive beats which really pumped me up.

My review?

First of all. No matter who will be spinning at Guv EVER again, no matter how big, no matter how inexpensive, no matter what conditions in my favour,
I WILL NEVER VISIT THE GUVERMENT COMPLEX EVER AGAIN!

Allow me to explain. First of all the positive. It was great to see all the TAs and the music was WILD WICKED While I was there and I am Very sure it was for the rest of the night. I had a great time for that part.

Now for the bad.

The crowding of this event was ABSOLOUTELY WORSE that Labour of Love Last year! Everytime I wanted to dance some person keeps bumping into me trying to get by. Every 3-10 seconds I got someone bumping by me trying to get out of the dancefloor NO MATTER WHERE I STOOD!. I was trying to dance with trancekitten in about 5 duifferent places. Left right and center, front back. Everywhere there is someone trying to get by and at some points a whole Fucking Train of people at a time. Not just one or 2 but 4 or more. We did not pay a total of $53 (on cover, 1 drink each and coatcheck) to be fucking Pushed around in a club because it is too packed or by people who can't stay put. I payed that amount to have a great time and enjoy Armin in full force. We were SO FUCKING ANNOYEd by all the people pushing by us and trying to get by while we tried to dance that we left just b4 armin Started. I am sorry but this time, that was too much. How the fuck do u have fun while like one dozen of people per minuted keep bumpinginto u? If I Wanted to be in a pool of human bumperboats and pay more than 50 bucks to do it I would but I was expecting ot be entertained and have a good time.

I would ask for my money back but I know that those people would not give me back one cent. This si why they have all the rooms open, so that they can increase the legal capacity of the club and cash in more on the venue.

Due to all this I have lost TOTAL AND UTTER FAITH of ever having a good time @ the Guvernment complex EVER AGAIN. Someone could give me free tix to any even in that club and I would refuse and encourage them not to go there. I will never EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEEEEVER go that club again even if Jean michel Jarre and Kraftwerk were to do a live PA and IW ass allowed to by pass the line and enter for free.

I have never had as many problems with a club as much as Guv.

Unless this place was under new management or owned by a different person and got the act together then I will visit it again.

I am sorry that I missed Armin, but even this was too much for me. I can tolerate crowding to large degrees but this was far worse than ever experienced. If anyone did not expereince what we had to then I wish I could have been in your shoes and I thank god that u did not have to experience that.

The E*Master will never visit the Guv EVER AGAIN.

That's unforunate to hear Frank. I had a very similar experience at LoL 2002 and i vowed the same thing. But i have come to the realization that this problem seems to be limited to the Guv main room.

Last nite at PVD, the Koolhaus was very bearable, and infact even comfortable at some moments. I think if you're ever to return, just make sure that it's on an open access nite and just stay in the Koolhaus for the most part. I absolutely loathe the Guv mainroom in so many ways and very few DJ's at all would draw me to stand there for a single night. The Koolhaus is just such a better venue with it's higher ceilings, larger capacity, and strategically placed washrooms.

And no worries, when u hav an army of about 100+ TA's creating space for ya, it won't be so bad anymore truss me ..

The secret to my good time that night: wait until the guy at the stairs isn't looking.

it wuz mah second time seeing AVB, but the first time in Guvernment. I luv GUVERNMENT!!!!!! the only thing i wuzn't 'so' pleased with.. "OVERPACKED+TOO HOT!!! NO ROOM TO DANCE!!"

Never stop danCing

Hello to all - two dayz late - but better late then never!

I was there - it was GREAT! Met some new and old Friends! All of you are awesome! Thanks for everything and Mark Oliver and AVB ~ were GREAT! Unfortunatly I still have no voice from the weekend~! boo hoo...

It was steamy in there - I feel like I spent the weekend there~! GREAT stuff
oy, oy, oy fukcin' OY!

**sp on purpose!<---- just in case

So yeah I am going to have a nap now - but just a qwuick mention about not wanting to go out againt here just b/c there isn't enough space to boogie, you really do have to make and maintain your own space... it's just like when you are wal;kin down the street, if someone gets infront of you are you going to move or wait for them - you always have to move - so relax and enjoy and have fun when you party!

I behaved very well this weekend! Those of you seeing me in another state at other time would be proud!
hahaha

Thumbs up AVB

What can I say. Whoaa. AVB never dissapoints. Even with the Guv slam packed he made the night great. I love the way he plays with the crowd and shows emotion. I dont have one bad word to say about his set. It was moving, energetic, smooth I could go on and on. I dont think I will miss another AVB show thats within atleast four hours of here. It was the first time I have really gotten a chance to listen to MO and now I see why everyone loves him. Great sets by both the djs. Great fans in TO.

Posted by Anton on Oct-14-2003 16:05:

Cool

I thought I was gonna have a heart attack when he played clear blue.. the mixing was awsome.. was my first time at the guv its a really nice club if they could just have a little less people and more AC I dont think ive ever seen anyone so energetic and so happy to be where he is at 4am then Armin, what a guy. Too bad I had to leave at 5:30ish I would have loved to stay. HOPE HE COMES BACK SOON, I'll be there again for the full set this time !

What an amazing weekend I had! I returned to Chicago late last night, after my 12 hour drive from Toronto. My boyfriend and I had a blast! The Guv was amazing. The bass in that place was INCREDIBLE! I've never experience a sound system as intense as it was at Guv. Armin put on a great show! Damn, talk about hard trance! Such a different format from past events that I've been to. As usual, AvB did an amazing set and I definitly had one of the greatest nights of my life.

Also...let me compliment Toronto and the people of the city - YOU GUYS ARE WONDERFUL! I have never been to a place where the people are sooo NICE! I absolutely loved every minute of my stay and the people of Toronto and fellow clubbers at the Guv sure did make my boyfriend and I feel welcome. I cannot believe the generosity and hospitality of Toronto - you all should be PROUD.

Thank you guys again. I hope to visit Toronto again very shortly.

Are you speaking of TOTAs? or toronto in general?
one Ill agree upon, the other Ill wonder if you were really here.

my review of the night is non existant.

Adrienne got sick(and didnt make it to PvD) so we left early(4 am) after an hour of Armin. Its been 2 months since weve seen him, and itll be another 2 till we see him next. Not life altering.
but he did see the JA TRANCE and gave me big thumbs up (HELLZ YA!)
JA is for all Trance lovers.

Mark Played AMAZINGLY Rock your body rock, cry me a river, murder was the bass...oh man. YOU RULED.
then armin did the strange thing of playing so much harder than Ive ever heard him before. it was strange and NICE! I loved what I was hearing.

complaints
too hot
too packed
the laser was burning my eyes out of my head, sunglasses are a need next time I go to guv. coming home, my eyes were so bloodshot it looked like smoked an oz. to myself. It hurt to keep them open.

I had a good time. Not great. Just good. I was saving for the next night, and didnt really let myself go...so yea. not really appropriate to judge the events. but tooooo packed in there.

Posted by xGirlx on Oct-14-2003 17:39:

Ok...more so I should say the fellow clubbers at the Guv. Everyone was extremely nice.

Also....I WILL BE BACK IN TORONTO NOVEMBER 22nd! I just read a thread that Lady Dana is coming. I AM NOT GOING TO MISS THIS!

Posted by Walter Mindz on Oct-14-2003 18:23:

Oliver played one of the best sets that i've heard from him in awhile, amazing... i love how he got into some Techno too and did a great job with... "Murder was the Bass" - best Techno track of the year!! Loved hearing it live!! It was also great to hear some tracks that i haven't heard since 98-99.

ARmin Van Buuren... I voted for him to be #1 this year, and after seeing him for the 6th or 7th time live on Saturday night, I still stand by my vote. Armin started off with 2 wicked opening tracks more on the mellow, but trancy side... the second track was amazing kinda on the dark side. His set didn't start off steady thumping right away, which i like because i enjoy sets that build more then bang off right from the get go. Another thing that impressed me once again was that he wasn't so predictable by playing a bunch of newer/ unreleased tracks. Track of the night for me was,
Water Planet pres. Terry Bones vs Fred Baker - "Introspection" (John Askew Remix)
other tracks that he played that night were:
Mr Sam vs Tim Coltrane presents The Tribute - "One more Day" (Original Mix)
Questia - Crystal Clouds
not sure but....Conjure One - Centre Of The Sun (Junkie XL Remix)
Sets ratings for the night:
Oliver: 8.5/10
AVB: 9.5/10

The Negatives:
Capacity level:
OVER CAPACITY!!! IF you have to squeeze between ppl just to get anywhere inside the place then it's over-capacity.

The Dance Performance on Stage:
WASTE OF SPACE!! Justin Timberlake track remake... even bigger waste of negative listing space!

Sound System on Patio:
Horrid... everytime Mark tweeked the high's... you had to plug your ears out there, because it was too ear piercing... no bass at all and full Highs = Deafening. + The sound is off you can hear the delay from the bass in the inside conflicting with the treble from the outside.

I thought the Storm from X-Men dance was pretty neat.

no I'm not gay

Armin was unforgetable. Definitely a moment in time. I had to sit down for a bit during Armin's set but as soon as Seven Cities came on I was like, huh? Very unreal...And immediately had to get up and boogie again. Big ups to the TAs for an amazing time. Apologies for bumping that LED message thingie (u know what I mean).

Posted by cono_sur on Oct-14-2003 23:18:

I had a great time!

Mark Oliver played really good opening set! and Armin, as usual was ON!!!

Unfortunately I left at 6 because I had to rest up because some other DJ was spinning the next night....

Tracks of the night for me were:
As The Rush Comes followed by Blue Fear!!

Next time (Q1 of next year? ) I have to hear Armin until close!!!

As for the issue of over capacity at Guv....what else is new? I didn't notice any difference from any previous events where a big DJ was spinning...

*** now time to read the PvD review ***

can anyone tell me the names of the tracks that were overlapped by Armin and MO? It's funny, b/c when Mark dropped these tracks, i promised and prayed to my friends that Armin would drop both of them...and of course he did. Mark is truly the best opening DJ there is....period!

Killer weekend alround. PVD killed it the next night as most of you know. However, Armin still destroyed him in my opinion. great weekend all around. they don't get much better then that. Two sick nights at the Guv./KH. have to say the highlight for me was MO's set the ended the whole weekend off...danced the hardest i did all weekend long and gained even more respect for Mark then ever before. I think i remember Mark saying something like "Armin closes the nights down perfectly".....well my friend, after hearing the shit you dropped early Monday morning, i beg to differ. Where do you get those fucking beats? You my friend are the best closer!

till the next time.
cheers!

Yup, those 2 tracks were played by both... I think there was another track too, but I can't remember.
